1 FEBRUARY, 2014 Calling all soup chefs and bakers! Souper Sunday XV February 2, 2014 The once-a-year chance to make or buy homemade soups and baked goods at church on Super Bowl Sunday. If you make soup, please use the containers provided in the kitchen. All items will be available for sale in Sanders Hall immediately following both services on February 2. WE COOK, WE BUY, WE CONQUER* Last year, 24 chefs whipped up 135 quarts of soup. This year s hosts, Vince and Nikki Troia, want to better that mark. Please help by volunteering to cook or assist at this annual event. Show-times on Thursday and Friday are at 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Darlene Marsh has joined the law firm of Dickinson Wright, PLLC as a member. She was previously a partner with Burr & Forman, LLP. THE SUNDAY SUPPER CLUB BEGINS ON FEBRUARY 9 The popular Sunday night study and supper group will return to St. David s on February 9. We will continue our study of First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, featuring John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg. The programs will meet from 5:30 7:15 p.m., beginning on Sunday, February 9, and will meet every Sunday night through April 6. Filmed on location throughout Galilee and Jerusalem, the First Light DVD examines the story of Jesus within the context of the time and places in which the events occurred. Noted scholars Crossan and Borg address questions such as the following: Why did Jesus happen when he happened? Why the confluence of the Baptism movement of John and the Kingdom movement of Jesus? Why the tiny villages around the Lake? Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there? Youth Group Christmas Caroling December, 2013 JOIN THE ST. DAVID S USHER TEAM! Ushers are needed at both the 8:00 a.m. service and the 10:30 a.m. service. Ushers assist with worship services by handing out the bulletin before services, circulating the alms bags at the offertory, delivering the elements and the alms to the priest at the offertory, and assisting parishioners at the. The next opportunity for Holy Baptism will be Easter Eve, Saturday, April 19, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. Please contact the parish office if you are interested presenting a candidate What were the priorities of Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom? The first session on February 9 will be a review of Part One of First Light, which we used in the fall. If you did not participate in the fall program but would like to join now, this review will be of special interest to you. Each evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the program, followed by a soup and salad supper. The suggested donation for supper will be $5 per person. While it is not necessary to attend every session, it is important to let the office know by Wednesday if you will not be able to attend the following Sunday. To sign up: call or the church office. 4 SEDER MEAL SATURDAY, APRIL 13 by the Rev. Molly Dale Smith St. David s will host a Seder Meal on Sunday, April 13, Palm Sunday. Our Seder Meal will echo a traditional Jewish Seder but our purpose will be to commemorate the beginning, the very roots of our, the central act of Christian worship, by showing the direct relation between Jewish and Christian practices. Celebrated on the Passover Eve, the Seder Meal is the occasion in which the head of the Jewish household relates to the children the story of the exodus from Egypt and explains to them the meaning of the rites connected with the celebration of the Passover. The ceremony is rich in symbolism and is an important link to our Jewish-Christian heritage. Advance registration will be essential and more information will be available soon. Put this on your calendar NOW. YOUTH GROUP TRIP TO MAMMOTH CAVE The St. David's Youth are planning an overnight trip to Kentucky where they will explore Mammoth Cave, spend the night at an Episcopal Retreat Center and then, after attending a local church, tour the Corvette Museum on the way home. The group will depart from St. David's at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, and return to the church around 5:30 p.m. the next day. The previously ed consent form must be completed, signed, and returned to one of the youth leaders (Connor, Brad, or Cal) along with payment for the trip by Sunday, February 2nd. ROOM IN THE INN The St. David s community continues our 28th season of participating in Room in the Inn at the St. Luke s Community House gymnasium, not far from St. David s. The remaining dates for Room in the Inn for this winter are February 8 and March 8. Sign-up sheets for every month are posted in the hallway leading to Sanders Hall. Volunteers should arrive at St. Luke s at 5:45 p.m. Opportunities to participate range from bringing prepared food for dinner or the next day s breakfast and lunch, washing the linens used, to spending the night with the guests. Every Sunday we repeat the words of the Nicene Creed and proclaim this is what we believe. However, do we pay attention to the words and their meaning? On March 8, we will take an in-depth look at this statement of our faith. We will learn the history of the creed, talk about its role in our faith tradition, and discuss its meaning to contemporary Christians. 5 More details to come later in the month.

FEBRUARY 2015 WE ARE IN A GOOD PLACE I have been a member of St. David s since the summer of 1982. I sought out the church, as many do, by following the signs. I had visited a few other parishes in my
