1 MAY, 2010 JESUS BLESSES LITTLE CHILDREN People were bringing little children to Jesus In order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. Mark 10:13-16 If we want to know more deeply the heart of God, we need look no further than the faith and wonder and presence of a child. Children have the capacity to see things that we as adults can no longer see. They have the remarkable ability to exalt in the mundane, the common, and the forgotten. What we as adults take for granted or see as monotonous children see as a mystery and enchantment. On Youth Sunday, which we celebrated on Easter II, April 11, I witnessed first-hand the amazing faith and depth of our children here at St. David s. I saw Jesus fully alive, in flesh and blood, in the form of some of our young people. That Sunday, as I was standing in the Henderson Room getting ready to process, I saw what seemed to be a beaming light in the midst of normalcy as one of our high school students cracked the biggest smile I have ever seen on her face. She was getting ready to serve communion for the first time in her life to the rest of the parish. Her whole presence was that of energy and spirit. She was so excited to get to use her gifts to serve God and serve people in that moment. And her expression never changed. That same exuberance and light that was in her smile made its way into the church during the procession. It permeated the rest of the parishioners in the pews, and it ministered to countless numbers of people as she served them at the. Jesus was present. That same morning, as I made my way through the undercroft, I was chatting with another young person, and I inquired whether he were going to go home early (Mama wasn t feeling well ) or whether he were coming to church. And he said, I m staying; I really want to hear the sermon in church today. It s how I get renewed. I was blown away! 1

2 And the truth is Jesus is present in all our children, youth, students, and young adults here. The health and growth that is developing in our children is evident in our children s choirs, in Godly Play, Rite-13, and J2A, and in our acolyte program. Images of our Heavenly Creator are all around us. We just have to have eyes that are wide enough to see them. E.S.G. CLASS OF 2010: CONGRATULATIONS, GRADS! She was nominated by Seigenthaler Public Relations. What a great honor and recognition welldeserved! Katie Maiberger will graduate Saturday, May 8, from Bellarmine University with dual majors: English and Psychology. She's graduating cum laude, so we should all be proud of her for that. In addition to her academic achievement, for all but her freshman year she's worked hours a week at The Children's Place in St. Matthew's Mall in Louisville. Right now, no plans for grad school. Dad John Maiberger and Mom Linda Heft with Linda s Mom and sister traveling from Ohio will be headed for the baccalaureate and graduation. 64 TH ANNUAL LAYMEN S CONFERENCE The 2010 Conference of the Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee will be held at the DuBose Conference Center, Monteagle, during the weekend of August The Annual Conference of the Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee is said to be the largest conference of its type in The Episcopal Church and possibly the world-wide Anglican Communion. The first Annual Conference was held at the DuBose Conference Center in Monteagle, in September, After the creation of the two dioceses in West and East Tennessee in 1983 and 1985, the organization continued with the laymen of all three dioceses operating as one state-wide organization, but with separate officers for each of the three Grand Divisions. The Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee raise money through their offerings at the Annual Conference and through the sale of shirts and caps displaying the Episcopal symbols. These funds are used to cover expenses of the Annual Conference and support of any outreach efforts of the organization. The program this year features the Rev. Dr. Daniel Matthews, Father Charles Strobel, 3 and Larry Gates; the three bishops in Tennessee will also be at the weekend. Athletic activities, community events, and liturgical opportunities abound! Contact the parish office for a registration form or register at SUNDAY MORNING BREAKFASTS We re so grateful to all of our Sunday morning breakfast chefs who have provided such delicious fare and offered delightful hospitality. Since January, Howard Fox, Carolyn Avery, Annette Pilcher, Rahn Huber, Dot Williams, Jennifer Leathers, Susan Moore, Ann Riddle, Mary Lou Pierce, Kathy Carlson, Dotty Rogers, Madison Hamilton, John Hamilton, and Jackie Hamilton have gotten up in the wee hours to make sure that breakfast was ready between the services. But Lynda Christiansen is the mover-and-shaker who has guided the whole enterprise, adding her singular touch to the kitchen. Thank you, thank you! Breakfasts concluded on Easter Day and will resume on Rally Day on September 12. FROM THE JUNIOR WARDEN by Stephen Jordan Many thanks to Lezette Thomason and Annette White for planting English boxwoods and azaleas, weeding, and trimming, in their ongoing beautification of the patio area; to Joe Brown and John Maiberger for the removal of rust and the cleaning of our "Episcopal Church Welcomes You" signs; to Joe Brown for pressure-washing the columbarium exterior; and to John Maiberger for installing fluorescent lighting in the sacristy attic. YOU MIGHT BE AN EPISCOPALIAN if you know the difference between a surplice and a cotta and the appropriate use of each. if words like vouchsafe, oblation, supplications, succor, bewail, wherefore, dost, and very (in its archaic sense) are familiar to you even if you don t have a clue what they mean. if your groomsmen at your wedding whisper with God s help to you during your vows after you say, I will. if you think that the Bible is a holy book because it quotes the Book of Common Prayer so well. if, while looking for a can opener in the church kitchen, all you can find are four corkscrews. if you catch yourself genuflecting or bowing as you enter a row of seats in a theater. if you visit any Protestant church, and when you get seated you say, Where are the kneelers? or, Where is the altar? if you can pronounce innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same. if the word Sewanee puts a lump in your throat. if you ever find yourself saying, Oh, but we ve never done it that way before. if, when visiting a Roman Catholic Church, you are the only Ah-men in a sea of Amens. if your covered-dish for the pot-luck supper in escargot in puff shells. if you know that a primate isn t just a monkey. if you know that a Sursum Corda is not a surgical procedure. if you don t think Agnus Dei is a woman. if your picnic basket has sterling knives and forks (entrée, fish, salad, and cake). if you know that the nave is not a playing card. if your friend said, I m truly sorry, and you replied, and you humbly repent. if you consider a bumper sticker on your car to be an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace. if you know that humble access has nothing to do with a security clearance. if you know that the Senior Warden and the Junior Warden are not positions in the local prison. if you not only talk about God, but God is placed in the palm of your hand. And finally, if you reach a point when you re not sure about anything theologically, but you still feel completely at home at the altar rail and somehow know you re meeting God there, even though you can t begin to understand how.
