1 SEPTEMBER, 2005 RALLY DAY IS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11: WELCOME HOME! What does it mean to be tangibly welcomed by the God who loves each one of us as much as and more than the father who welcomes home his wayward offspring in the parable of the Prodigal Son? This deep, abiding, irrevocable love is what we celebrate every year on Rally Day. We celebrate the ritual of coming home every September, whether or not we have actually traveled away. Some of us have only been away from church since the previous Sunday. Others have been off on great vacations for part or most of the summer. But the ritual welcoming of the community of faith and a deep awareness of our sense of resting at home in God s love can happen over and over in our lives at un-programmed times. I feel with all of you a strong, abiding bond as we gather Sunday after Sunday to give praise to God who loves us and to celebrate the community of God in our work and play and presence with one another. We are community to one another. I have seen this witness in so many and varied ways inside and outside. Inside the church this Rally Day, we will witness to God and to one another through the music, the prayers, the scripture, the sermon, the meal of sacred bread and holy wine. We will begin anew another program year as we commission one another for a new year of commitment to our own work for God to find our own ways to forward the gospel values of justice and wholeness for all people. Outside, at the Parish Picnic at Ann Walling s farm in Williamson County (see details elsewhere), we ll witness to the community of faith by feasting on good food, catching up with old friends, and welcoming new ones. I hope you ll accept this invitation to be present, become a part, and find some new way to become involved in the St. David s family. Let s Rally! E.S.G.

3 ONION RINGS by Norman Gillis In case you ve recently driven down 21 st Avenue at West End and have seen all the construction on the first floor of the Baker Building (where Goten was), here s the scoop: the space has been renovated to accommodate several offices of Development & Alumni Relations, including Gift Processing where Eleanor Gibbons is Assistant Director. Everybody moved from University Plaza across the street in August. When it comes to liturgy and doing it by the book, no one is more PC (prayerfully correct) than the rector. The Book, however, must have been swept away by the tides as Father Rick conducted his first wedding in khakis, a golf shirt, and sandals. Sandals? At the last minute he decided to throw all caution to the wind (and sea) and performed the ceremony barefoot! According to Rick, it was his first and last time (time and the tides will tell). The occasion was the seaside wedding of Martha Grace and Tim Ross on Inlet Beach, in Florida. Jaci Kitch has a new job. She s a Vice President of SunTrust in the Corporate Trust department. Also, Jaci and John s daughter, Heather and husband Jody, are expecting, and should make Jaci and John grandparents again next February. And just to make future Thanksgivings even better, son TJ and his wife Melissa are expecting their second child in September. And if you are looking for a house to celebrate your next Thanksgiving in, Jaci and John have just the place for a very reasonable price Brian Huskey and family are set for many changes as of September. Leslie headed off to start college at the University of the South at Sewanee. In the meantime, Brian and Rebecca Newton moved to Boston, where Brian begins three years of seminary at the Episcopal Divinity School. The house is sold (they hope!), the boxes are beginning to pile up and they re counting their sweaters. You can reach them after September 4, at 4-A St. John s Road, Cambridge, MA Cal Fox had a big summer working, traveling, and frolicking at the Whitworth pool. He worked 2 jobs: snack bar at the Whitworth pool, and ushering/concessions at the Green Hills Cinema. His travels included college visits to UT Knoxville, UT Chattanooga, and Tennessee Tech. He also traveled with the family for a week-long vacation to Appalachicola, Florida, in July. The summer ended with two awesome EYC trips: one was a service project to St. Mary s Center in Sewanee for two days in late July doing landscaping (i.e., rock moving), followed by a white-water rafting trip on the Ocoee River a week later. Cal is now beginning his senior year at Martin Luther King Magnet School. Brother Howie began the summer traveling. After a week at Camp Gailor-Maxon, he spent 3 weeks in Germany, living with a family in Wiesbaden and taking day trips to Berlin, Mainz, and a boat trip on the Rhine. He was back in time to go to Florida with the family, to work part-time at Whitworth, and to participate in the EYC trips. He is now beginning his sophomore year at MLK. Bradley Leathers, a rising sophomore at St. Louis University, is headed across the pond in September to study business and finance at the University of London for a semester. He s excited about the venture and Mom and Dad, Jennifer and Raymond, plan a visit in December. In fact, they ll be making it a family affair as daughter Frances, a rising freshman at East Tennessee State University, will go with them. Christmas in England should be nice. And speaking of trips overseas, Mary and Kent Agee spent several days on the French Riviera over the summer attending the marriage of Mary s brother. C est bon! Mary Jo and Dick Murphy were also in England during August. They flew into London only to hop a cruise ship to tour the British Isles. Whitney Sanders discovered the ocean for the first time in her life when Jennifer and Evan Sanders and the entire Sanders clan, including Kathy and Tommy Tompkins and newlyweds Marlin and Bill Sanders, gathered at the beach in South Carolina for their annual family reunion. Congratulations to Betsy and Steve McElroy on the birth of Kyle William who was born at Vanderbilt Hospital on Wednesday, August 10. Big brother Evan is now sharing the spotlight Kay Nasser has been sipping lemonade and basking in the breezes off Nantucket again this summer. Concerts and art exhibits have featured 3

4 prominently in her daily activities at her homeaway-from-home. Angie and Eric Greenwood, who live in Columbia, South Carolina, were sighted around Nashville during August while visiting Sharon and Rick Greenwood. Senior Warden Carolyn Schmidt accompanied hubby Chester and grandson Joey to St. Louis during August to catch up on some baseball with the Cardinals. Long time parishioner Betsy MacPherson has moved to upstate New York to be nearer her family. We ll let you know her address when we get it! Former Junior Warden John Maiberger came to the rescue and replaced the dishwasher in the kitchen the other day. Rather ominous grinding sounds were heard coming from the motor of the old one. But a flood was averted, and the new machine purrs like a kitten. Thanks (again) John! St. David s sent a contingent of folks to the annual Laymen s Conference at DuBose in August. Included were: Raymond Leathers, Bill Van Cleave, David Lose, Tom Means, Roger Proctor, Joe Brown, Howard Fox, and Bob Van Cleave, from St George's. Lauren Rayhab and a classmate wrote a poem last spring that was selected in a national contest to be published in Young Poet s Digest. St. David s joins parents Mary Leigh and Scott in saying, We re so proud! ACROSTIC POEM by McKenna Foster and Lauren Rayhab Best Friends are people who: Bring happiness Enter your heart and Stay there forever Top all the rest of your friends. Forever bring care Really make you smile Interest you in things you wouldn t do End your fear of these things. Never seem to go away (that s a good thing) Debate with you about different things See what is hurting you if you re sad That s why best friends are so important. St. David s presents its Sixth Annual Gringo Market! October 6*, 7, and 8 The market promises to be the biggest yet: more items, new items, and great prices! We need many volunteers to set up and work at the market. There will be a sign-up sheet on the Mission/Outreach bulletin board. Please think about donating a few hours of service. Your participation will help us to continue to minister to the people of Nashville and points beyond. *pre-sale for St. David sparishioners and longtime supporters. CHRISTIAN FORMATION Adult Christian Formation at St. David s strives to help all who seek Christ and a deeper knowledge of him. Our programs are designed to challenge heart and mind and to nurture Christian formation and community. Our programs are founded on the Baptismal Covenant and are oriented to prepare us all to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ, to seek and serve Christ in all persons, and to strive for justice and peace among all people, respecting the dignity of every human being. We believe that this is done most effectively in communal dialogue which respects the contributions of all members of the Body of Christ. St. David s offers the Adult Forum on Sunday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. in Sanders Hall during the program year from September through May. The class is comprised of clergy and/or lay led presentations and interactive discussion. Topics offer a wide variety of material in the areas of theology, the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer, hymnody, the sacraments and liturgy of the Episcopal Church, as well as timely book discussions and videotape seminars. Beginning Rally Day, the Adult Forum will feature the following: 4

5 Sunday, September 11: An update from the diocesan Episcopate Committee on the search for nominees for the upcoming election of a bishop coadjutor. Sunday, September 18: A presentation from Continuing Episcopalians of Tennessee whose goals include remaining faithful to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of the Episcopal Church; maintaining our identity as a diocese of the Episcopal Church; and electing a bishop loyal to the Episcopal Church and its heritage in these troubled times. Sunday, September 25: The first of three in a series on Spirituality and Imagination. Human imagination helps us live together with unity not uniformity. Enjoy, share, and learn about the fascinating realm of imagination and faith. Through stories, poetry inspired by the Hebrew Scriptures, and discussion, the classes will explore the interplay between one s imagination and spirituality. How do we understand our spirituality and our imagination as we strive to enlarge our life of thought, transformation, and action? Storyteller, workshop leader, and parishioner at St. David s for over ten years, Shelley Gotterer will convene three sessions (through October 9). Don t bring anything except your imagination. A Monday Morning Bible Study takes place yearround (except August) in the Henderson Room from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon each week. It is a clergy led class open to all who wish to explore the biblical texts and their interpretation and importance in our lives. Currently, the Book of Genesis is under consideration. A nursery is also available. Education for Ministry (EFM) is a program of theological education for the laity of the church. It has been developed by the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee. Completion of the program takes four years, during which time participants study the Bible, church history, and theology. Participants commit to one year at a time to meet regularly in seminars led by trained mentors. They engage in comprehensive, experiential education in the foundations and message of our Christian faith. St. David s EFM group meets on Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Sanders Hall. Inquirers Classes are offered for eight weeks each year immediately preceding the annual visitation of the bishop, which is usually in May. The classes prepare those who seek to know more about the Episcopal Church and for those who desire to be confirmed or received. Godly Play is gearing up for another great year at St. David s. Classrooms have been moved to better accommodate each of our groups. Andrea Herlong and the youth group have moved into the room in which Godly Play II met last year. (We have the wonderful problem of the youth group s having grown too large for their former room!) Godly Play II will take the space formerly occupied by the nursery, and the nursery has moved across the hall to the room with the microwave, refrigerator, and sink all handy items for care of infants and toddlers. Godly Play I and Godly Play III have swapped rooms to give the bigger, older children more room. On Sunday mornings, Children s Chapel begins at 9:15 a.m., and Godly Play meets from 9:30 10:25 a.m. Godly Play I includes three year olds through kindergarten. If a child is two, we will begin to incorporate him or her into the group until he or she is ready to stay for the entire session. Godly Play II and III include children in first through sixth grade. On Rally Day, September 11, all children are asked to meet at 9:15 a.m. in Children s Chapel for worship and musical activities. Laura Duke will lead musical adventures with biblical themes. All teachers are asked to meet in the rooms they will be teaching in during the year. They will have 15 or 20 minutes to talk and plan for the year; then the children will join them to get to know each other and the teachers. Official Godly Play storytelling will begin on Sept. 18, in Children s Chapel at 9:15 a.m. Want to get involved? How about Ushering! Any women or men who would like to become an usher at Saint David s, please call Howard Fox and leave a voice message at

6 EYC by Andrea Herlong The EYC will be selling t-shirts in Sanders Hall on Rally Day, September 11, to raise funds for retreats, special programs, and extra fun events. All 7 th through 12 th graders are invited to join the group for Christian Formation every Sunday from 9:30 10:15 a.m. and for a fun extra event at least once a month. Upcoming events include a fall lock-in and the diocesan youth retreat October EYC SERVICE PROJECT AT ST. MARY S IN SEWANEE by Howard M. Fox, Jr. For our EYC service project we went to St. Mary s Conference Center in Sewanee, Tennessee. Originally, we were told that we were to paint part of the inside of the center, and clear a trail in the woods. Instead, we were asked first to dig up, then move several extremely heavy rocks. By the end of the first hour, most of us were very tired. As the day went on and we got accustomed to the work, it seemed to become easier. At the end of the day we were all very tired. After the work was done we all took showers and headed off to the University of the South s dining hall. After dinner we had an evening devotional. The next day we woke up for an early breakfast. After breakfast we packed up our stuff and headed out. Before we left the mountain, we decided to go see the Natural Bridge. Soon after, we were on our way home. Overall, I think we all had a good time. I can t wait until we do our next service project. EYC GOES WHITEWATER RAFTING by Rachael Howland School has started again, and as I reflect upon my summer, I remember as one of my favorite things the trip that the St. David s very own EYC took. On August 4 th, we once again piled into 2 vans and headed east for a day full of fun. The ride there went by fast, and we finally arrived at our destination: the Ocoee Adventures White Water Rafting place, with miles of white raging waters and beautiful scenery. Some people were hesitant at first to think if they would like it or not, but as soon as we went down our first set of rapids, everyone wanted more. The worst part was when we realized it was over and knew we had to head back home. There are hidden lessons behind this trip, like we need to work together or things won t work, trust God, and other personal lessons. I don t think we could have taken another trip that could have made us enjoy the power and beauty that God bestows on the world as Ocoee did. We also say goodbye to Frances Leathers who made this trip with EYC her last because she will soon be attending college. We will miss you! I can t wait until next summer to go on our next trip! CHOIRS by Donald Cornelius Do you like to sing? Do you look good in blue and white? Do you like high places? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then St. David s choirs are the place for you. Our children s choirs are for singers from age 5 through 6 th grade and meet for rehearsal and dinner on Sunday evenings from 4:45 p.m. to 6:10 p.m. beginning September 18, and continuing through Easter. Our choirs use the Royal School of Church Music model which includes studies on the Hymnal 1982, the Book of Common Prayer, music theory, playing instruments, and of course, singing. The adult choir meets on Wednesdays, from 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on a weekly basis and sings for the 10:30 a.m. service and other special services from Rally Day through Pentecost Sunday. Participation in choir is a wonderful opportunity to serve St. David s, to get to know other members of the parish, and to have a good time learning and singing. If you or your children would like to be a part of our choir program, please contact Donald Cornelius through the church office ( ) or at DECOrgan@aol.com 6

7 ST. DAVID S BRIDGE CLUB by Bill Rawlins Annette Pilcher was elected as secretary-treasurer at the Bridge Club annual meeting in June but will not be able to serve due to her diocesan responsibilities. Bill and Suzanne Rawlins agreed to continue to serve in this post. The club voted to send $300 to the Hispanic Lunch Program and to increase dues from $2.50 to $3.00 for each meeting a player attends. After summer vacation the club resumes monthly meetings on the third Saturday of September. New members would be greatly welcomed to join the group. THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN TENNESSEE by Ann Walling In his commencement address to graduating seniors at the University of Miami, columnist George Will noted, The sun around which Earth orbits is one of perhaps 400 billion stars in the Milky Way, which is a piddling galaxy next door to nothing much. On top of that there are perhaps 140 billion galaxies in the still-unfolding universe. If all the stars in the universe were only the size of the head of a pin, they still would fill Miami s Orange Bowl to overflowing more than 3 billion times. Mr. Will uses these facts to dispel any notion that this tiny speck called human beings might have clear and simple certitude about who created the universe and what this creator wants done to make this little speck perfect. It occurs to me that Mr. Will might have been speaking to the Episcopal Church, or maybe specifically to the Diocese of Tennessee. There are many within our Episcopal family that are willing to take extreme measures even destruction of the structure whose interrelationships mold us into the Episcopal way of being the people of God. Those who are willing to take these measures proclaim a certitude about the mind of God that is truly amazing in this tiny speck of creation. There seems to be a large contingent of Episcopalians in Tennessee who have fallen prey to the lure of the serpent in the Garden of Eden. The serpent asks if God forbade eating the fruit of the forbidden tree. The woman affirms that she will surely die if she eats of the fruit. The serpent said to the woman, You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God knowing good and evil. Those who have eaten of the fruit believe that they are like God knowing good and evil that they know the fullness of the truth, and are willing to bludgeon all other notions of propriety and morality. Our public dialogue in Tennessee is fraught with bitterness and deeply divisive certitude that is way over-the-top in proportion to what binds us together as the people of God. Perhaps we should pray for all of us to embrace a spirit of not being too sure that we are right as we move forward to elect a new bishop. BLOOMIN ONION NEWS by Laura Duke & Betsy McElroy Bloomin Onions is a fellowship group for families, singles, and couples. Welcome to the start of a new church year! We invite anyone who is interested in being a part of this great group to give Laura Duke ( , dljmduke@mac.com) or Betsy McElroy ( , betsy_mcelroy@comcast.net) a call. This year, we plan to kick-start the new year on Friday, September 23, at 7:00 p.m. with a Tapas Party at Laura & Don Duke s home near the Warner Parks. Please bring your favorite appetizer and beverage. Beginning in October, we will return to our brunch-meetings, which will be bi-monthly on the 3 rd Sunday of the month after church (Oct., Dec., Feb., April). We look forward to a great year. THE FUNERAL CHECKLIST The death of a member of the church should be reported as soon as possible, and arrangements for the funeral should be made in consultation with the Minister of the Congregation. (Book of Common Prayer, page 490) So that we might care more intentionally for family, friends, or loved ones, we have a Funeral Checklist form that you may complete and keep on file in the parish office. Questions include where you would like the service to take place, what lessons or hymns you d prefer, how you would like memorials designated, etc. In order to update your existing form or complete a new one, please call the parish office at

This is a form of outreach to provide comfort, love, and warmth to those in need of support. We will be making shawls and praying for the recipients as we work. At present we are in contact with Alive Hospice and St. Luke s, to identify those who are ill, alone, or in need of this outreach. Who: Anyone in the parish (or outside) who can knit or crochet or would like to learn. When: We will meet the first and third Wednesday of each month, beginning in September, from 5:30 7:00 p.m. Each member will bring a sack supper. Where: We will meet in Sanders Hall to eat and then move to the Henderson Room to knit. If you are interested in this ministry, contact Judy Grace at judithgrac@aol.com or There is more information at A WORD ON HOLY BAPTISM The Book of Common Prayer designates days in the liturgical year as being especially appropriate for the celebration of Holy Baptism. These are: the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany), Easter Eve (the Saturday before Easter Day), the Day of Pentecost, and the Sunday after All Saints Day. While Episcopalians are noted for making exceptions, we would like as much as possible to observe this custom of reserving the celebration of Holy Eucharist for these special days. The next opportunity for Holy Baptism at St. David s will be November 6, the Sunday after All Saints Day. Anyone desiring to be baptized or to have a child baptized should contact the parish office. The next opportunity after November 6 will be on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord on January 8, Coming Soon: ST. DAVID S PICTORIAL DIRECTORY by Howard Fox You will be running out of excuses to not learn everyone else s name after the publication of the St. David s Pictorial Directory. But first, we need to get everyone s picture made. Sign-up sheets to have your picture made will be posted on Rally Day (September 11) on, or near, the bulletin board across from the kitchen. The actual sittings are tentatively scheduled for the first week in October. Olan Mills will be producing the directories at no charge to Saint David s, and hope to make their money through the purchase of personal or group photos, so please consider having a formal family photograph made while sitting for your directory picture. (Choose attire accordingly: hint, hint ) If you have a family member away who is also an active member of Saint David s, please give us a recent photo of them which can be placed in the directory (college student, serving in the military, etc.). There will also be numerous candid photos sprinkled throughout the directory, which is an area where we need your assistance. If you have any recent pictures from Saint David s gatherings, or if you have any questions, please call Howard Fox at

Last month? Last year? There is no way that Christian performance in this area matches God s expectation. Harv Oostdyk St. David s outreach ministries, both here and abroad, continue to manifest great need and call us to respond in whatever way we are able. The following updates will provide you with information and opportunities to serve. Ecuador: Our companion parish priest, the Rev. Goldi Santana, ministers to three parishes in our companion diocese of Litoral, Ecuador. How Goldi divides her time among the three churches boggles the mind! Our companion parish, La Gracia de Dios, is located in another province, a distance by bus of 2½ hours. Goldi has started sewing classes, has remodeled her churches, and has schools in each of them. In La Gracia, Goldi continues to supervise her staff of teachers. With the money we have sent her in the past year (over $3,000 from Gringo Market sales), Goldi has done the following: provided a Christmas party for the children at the school, strengthened the wall that divides the nave from the school, repaired the door to the church, painted the church, provided uniforms for the children who could not afford them (there are 40 students), made minor repairs at the church, bought educational materials, and improved the plumbing at the church. Goldi has sent a detailed report of her expenses and also receives assistance form the government so that the children receive a meal each day. During the medical mission in July, members of Christ Church Cathedral gave Goldi the funds that they had raised from their Gringo Market. She is going to put a new and badly needed roof on the church. We brought back beautiful items from Ecuador to sell in the Gringo Market in October. With the anticipated money, Goldi will be able to add a playground and classroom. Honduras: A joint team from St. David s and Trinity, Clarksville, will be in San Pedro Sula the end of this month. The primary focus for the St. David s group will be to visit all the children who are receiving help with their schooling thanks to our scholarship donations. At present we are helping about 40 children. Sponsors are from Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and New York. We will visit with the children to assess their needs and to update our records. If you are interested in helping a child further his or her education, please contact Judy Grace. The waiting list is endless. Mexico: A team visited the end of August to check on the progress of our project in Las Cañas outside of San Miguel de Allende. We are hoping to build a library and possibly a playground. More in the next Wild Onion. Hispanic Lunch Program: The volunteers took a one month hiatus and will begin again in September. Several of the men are now involved in our cottage industry (Cross Roads). They are making tile wall crosses, metal flowers, and hopefully some items with mosaic tiles. Rumor has it that the food has been so good lately that there is a demand for a new cookbook! Please remember donations of men s clothing (casual). There is a bin in Sanders Hall where you may leave them. St. Luke s: There are many opportunities for volunteering at St. Luke s Community Center. Please see the list on the bulletin board across from the kitchen. 9
