ROOM IN THE INN - NEXT OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE IS JANUARY 13 Please sign up on the Mission/Outreach bulletin board outside the sacristy to help. VESTRY ELECTIONS AND SAINT DAVID S ANNUAL PARISH MEETING 9:15 a.m. in the Nave on Sunday, January 14, 2018 Mark the date and time for Saint David s Annual Parish Meeting when we will elect four members to the Vestry Class of To be eligible to serve on the Vestry, one must be at least 18 years old, a confirmed Episcopalian, and a communicant of Saint David s Church, having been either confirmed here or received by Letter of Transfer from another Episcopal congregation. Vestry members are expected: to be involved in the programs, activities, and spiritual life of the parish; to be regular in attendance and worship, to attend monthly Vestry meetings (normally held on the second Tuesday of the month), the annual Vestry retreat, and other meetings when scheduled; to practice proportionate giving with an awareness of the tithe as the biblical standard of giving; to assume a leadership role in the parish; to be willing to serve as a liaison to a cluster or a committee. Please contact the church office to nominate a candidate for the Vestry election; nominations may also be made at the meeting. According to our by-laws, one hundred persons constitute a quorum, eligible voters must be confirmed, must be 16 years of age, and must be present to vote. No proxy or absentee voting is allowed. Annual reports will be made by the clergy and lay leaders, and the 2017 year-end financials will be presented. Please take the time to read the following biographies of persons who have submitted themselves as candidates for Vestry election to date. Judy Grace I love Saint David s! Snake and I have been members for 40 years and have watched our church grow physically (building and number of members) and spiritually. During my years here I have been involved in various activities, both in the church and in the diocese. On the diocesan level I have served on Standing Committee, Bishop and Council, the Companion Diocese Committee, and have been a deputy to General Convention twice. At Saint David s I have served on the vestry three times and have been senior warden. I have been a member of the choir for 30+ years. I love working on the annual bazaar, as it brings back memories of my mother and grandmother s involvement in their bazaar. (St. David s may be the only bazaar church around!) I am (humbly) proud to have served on the Search Committee and have been known to pat myself on the back every time Rev. Carolyn preaches (as have the other members!). My particular area of involvement through the years has been mission and outreach. I manage Kiva.org and the loans we make to groups and individuals around the world. St. David s has participated in over 450 loans to date. I helped organize medical missions to Ecuador, worked with 3

the Rev. Ann Walling in Mexico, and managed a scholarship program in Honduras. On the local level, I worked at our Hispanic Lunch Program that St. David s developed with Holy Trinity Church. We provided lunch and a movie to the Hispanic homeless population. Like everyone else, my life is full of challenges and stress. When I walk through the doors of Saint David s, I know that I am in a judgment-free zone with people I love and who will support me. I feel calm and loved. At present I devote my time to my grandchildren and our pug puppy, Birdie. I would be honored to serve Saint David s as a member of the Vestry. Saint David s is the most wonderful place; every week I see new faces in the congregation, and I am overwhelmed by all of the activities taking place. I would love to develop some programs for children with disabilities and special needs and work with the Vestry in any way we can to live the Gospel. Owen Grimenstein I grew up in Fairview, just 30 minutes west of Nashville. I was raised in the Church of Christ and confirmed into the Episcopal church as an adult. Growing up, I played soccer and rode bikes through rural country roads. I played G.I. Joe and backyard football with neighborhood kids until my mom yelled, loud enough for everyone in the neighborhood to hear, for me to come home. I received my Bachelor s degree in business and Master s in Special Education from Lipscomb University and currently teach middle school. What I love about Saint David s is how much this church shows their love for one another and the community. I am so happy to be a part of it. Allison and I have been coming to Saint David s since We pretty much knew this would be our church home the first time we visited. This parish is a family and we saw that immediately. I currently serve on the stewardship and youth committees and help teach Sunday school to the youth group. I am also an innkeeper for Room in the Inn and an usher. I want to be on the Vestry at Saint David s because I want to make sure I m doing my part in helping this church move forward. I want to serve the people that mean so much to me. I am humbled to be nominated and excited for the opportunity! G'anne Harmon I have been a Saint David s parishioner since I ve served on Vestry twice and have been both Junior Warden and Senior Warden, positions that brought me gladly into close interaction with individual members of our community and their rich work for our missions. I discovered what talents and gifts of time, skill, and energy lay within each member and found not only vital help, but also inspiration, in unexpected places. I have served on the flower guild, the Christian Formation committee, taught Sunday School, and was active in a Saint David s Nashville Cares group; I served on a committee to spiff up Sanders Hall and the kitchen with new carpet, paint, and the tables and chairs we use in that space. That work with Saint David s friends lives in my memory as a high note of pleasure in teamwork and often 4

hilarious fun. I also loved the three years of EFM, its scholarship, its important conversations, and the growth of faith and understanding it engendered. I grew up in Nashville and, after twelve years away, came back to make my life here. I taught in Metro Nashville Public Schools for twenty-seven years and at Harpeth Hall for three years afterward. Presently, my avocation of writing has become my chief vocation. My values stand firmly with my family, my church, and support of actions for inclusion, equality and justice, for tolerant dialogue, and for love of neighbor as oneself manifested in word and deed. High hopes, but worth pursuit. lay reader as well. Allen Hovious I am a cradle Episcopalian who has enjoyed the comfort and community afforded by our church and its beliefs and practices. My family and I joined Saint David s in 1980 after moving here from Boston, Massachusetts following graduation from Business School. Already having family here, Joe and Betty Lentz, made Saint David s an easy choice to be our family church. I served one term on the Vestry in the late 80 s and was treasurer on more than one occasion. I have been an usher for all 37 years and now serve as a My current service to the church is working with a team to develop and implement a strategic plan and strategic management practices at Saint David s. That is my major gift of time and talent for the church and I am looking forward to continuing that work through the vestry and Carolyn s leadership. Our number one strategic priority is growth in all areas of the Church especially membership. That will be the area where I will contribute most of my time and energy in the coming year. Pete Long My wife, Laurie, and I will have been married 18 years in February. We moved to Nashville in 2009, Laurie is a professor at Vanderbilt and I am an IT Project Manager. We are the proud parents of two great young men, PJ (Peter James), age 11, and Dash (Michael), age 8. They are the reason we started coming to Saint David s. PJ and Dash both attended A New Leaf for pre-school and attended several summer camps as part of that program. That was our introduction to the church. As the boys started getting older, we agreed that going to church would be an important part of our family life. We met some parents who attend Saint David s, started the boys with Godly Play, and began attending the 8AM service after that. I was born and raised Catholic, and was extremely active in my church while growing up (altar boy, lector), and continued with that service in college (US Naval Academy). I was a Lay Eucharistic minister (LEM), taught Sunday school, and was also a lector. This continued thru my career in the Marine Corps, and after. In addition to serving at mass, I was the president of the parish council for the Catholic community at one of my duty stations. I am currently a project manager. By definition, a PM works with many different stakeholders, manages the budget, and is tasked with project delivery --- a project is defined as having a start 5

date, and end date, and an objective. Coordinating those activities seems to dovetail nicely with the roles inherent in the Vestry. I have a weird sense of humor, and in keeping with that, I think God does too (look at humanity)! Too often, we look at God as not relating to us, His creation. Some people look at Jesus in the same way --- he is so far above us, that we are afraid to just talk to him as we would talk to a friend. Derrill McRae I was a member of the First Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia, until the age of twelve. I then joined Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where I was baptized and confirmed. I was active in the EYC there. I was a member of Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church in Bellevue, Washington, as an adult and our children were baptized there. I taught preschool Sunday School as well as served on several committees. I joined Saint David's in 2011 and I have been on the Holiday Bazaar Committee for the last six years. I have assisted with parish office duties and serve as an usher at the late service. I have been active in the Nashville community, serving as co-president of the Brookmeade Elementary School PTO for two years and on the PTO board for seven years. At my children's middle school I served as a room mothers and chairperson of several fundraisers. At their high school I was head of the student fundraiser and silent auction. I was also a volunteer substitute teacher. While I was an active member of the Junior League of Nashville I was head of publications and served on the board. It would be an honor to serve on the Vestry of Saint David's and to work to help Saint David's reach its goals and serve our community. Ed Pierce I am a cradle Episcopalian who was active at Saint Luke s Cleveland in EYC and an acolyte from age I became inactive in my practice of my religion during college, medical school and early marriage but re-engaged with organized religion as a member of the Methodist Church for yrs largely at Forest Hills Methodist. In that period, I served both on the Administrative Board and the Pastor Parish Committees and taught and organized one adult class Sunday School class. In 1990 our family moved back to the Episcopal Church at Church of the Advent. I was involved in adult Sunday School teaching and as a Chalice bearer. We moved back to my home church, Saint Luke s, where I taught Sunday School, was active in the Men s Breakfast as well as being a Chalice bearer. We moved to Christ Church Macon where we were part time members of the congregation as we were in Hilton Head. We returned to Nashville in We ended our search for a church home in 2014 at Saint David s after brief stops at Christ Church and Saint George's. We take full blame for Rick s departure since there was Rector turnover where ever we joined. Anyway, Sally and I are chronic 8 o clocker s. I really prefer to be at my wife s side during services but she allows me to relive my youth around the alter once in a while as Chalice Bearer and we usher as well. We 6

have participated in the Foyer Groups and helped prepare the Breakfasts on occasion. This has helped us meet people though I cannot remember folk s names a lifelong inability. I have never served on the Vestry though I am aware of many of its activities. I am not a participant in the greater Church activities and have not attended the Diocesan meetings since my youth as a member of EYC. I consider myself politically inert but not without political opinion. I have never been interested in the politics of the church. As a voter for the Vestry, I have favored the younger and female candidates in hopes of seeing those groups being well represented. I am president of the West End Condo Home Owners Association and have held that office for the last 3 years. As such, I have been responsible for fiscal conservative activities that have restored the financial health of our association. I believe in responsibility of individuals to themselves, their family and to their community. I believe in local mission ministry. I am a retired physician (pathologist/laboratory medical director) who practiced in Nashville for the majority of my career. I also recruited pathologists for my group for 5 years as a formal duty. Between Sunday services I play golf, play and teach chess to youth in after school programs as a part of the Nashville Chess Center s programs, play bridge and read. Oh, and as a grandfather(opa) of four [aged 10,10,14 and15] I do carpooling from time to time and accompany Nana on some of her excursions with them when invited. Bill Schwartz Because I am relatively new to the parish I would like to present more background information than is usual. I have been an Episcopalian for approximately forty years and have been a parishioner of Episcopal churches in Evanston IL, the Robert E. Lee Memorial Church in Lexington VA (known locally in Lexington as "St Bob's") and Christ Church Cathedral here in Nashville. I am divorced, have a son, daughter-inlaw and two grandchildren in suburban Chicago. The grandchildren, I am happy to say, graduated from an Episcopal pre-school run by my son's parish. My partner, Patricia Cleary Miller, is a retired college professor living in Kansas City and you may have seen her with me worshiping at Saint David's when she is in Nashville. Prior to retirement I was a businessman for twenty five years, working as an international banker, international corporate treasurer, and in investments. The last ten years of my career (after the business experiences) I was a college professor, teaching business administration and economics courses at two small liberal arts colleges. Because the colleges were small I taught a variety of courses but when I taught the ones for which I was well qualified, I taught finance and international business. At Saint David's I have been (very recently) involved with Room in the Inn, provided a couple of brief write-ups on Washington Gladden and Jonathan Daniels for the E-Onion, and have cooked food for various fundraisers. I want to become more involved with the men's group. Outside of Saint David's I have been a Meals on Wheels volunteer delivery person for over ten years, have spent the night with the homeless for Christ Church Cathedral for over ten years, been involved 7

with recruiting and fund raising for two of my universities, and involved with various social/public service organizations. I have an active relationship with WPLN, our local Public Radio Station, most recently serving on their Community Affairs Board of Directors. The principal characteristics I would bring to the Vestry would be a fresh viewpoint since I have only been a parishioner for a year, broadly based work experience, a thoroughly international viewpoint, and good energy and follow through What drew me to St David's after Christ Church Cathedral was a desire to have a closer relationship with my fellow parishioners. I like to think that I am open to new ideas and suggestions. If you find me well-qualified I would appreciate your support. Diocesan Convention Resolutions from Saint David's by John Kitch, Senior Warden At its most recent meeting the Vestry voted unanimously to support three resolutions at the Diocesan Convention. The first two proposed resolutions involve amending Canon 15, Section 9, and Article X, Section 2, of the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee to permit members in good standing who are at least 16 years old to be elected to the Vestry of a parish. This is predicated on the notion that the current Canons permit parishioners 16 years old to vote for the members of the Vestry but require a Vestry member to be at least 18 years of age. The impetus for the resolutions is to give any voting member the opportunity to serve as a Vestry member. The proposed resolutions expressly prohibit a 16 year old from becoming a Warden or to serve as Secretary or Treasurer for legal reasons attributable to the fact that one holding such a position must be a legal adult. The third resolution, while recognizing the differences of opinion in the Diocese of Tennessee and respecting the position of the Bishop, asks that the Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee send a Memorial to the 79 th General Convention of the Episcopal Church asking for that body to vote to allow any member of the clergy who wishes to do so to use the Trial Use of Marriage and Blessing Rites concerning same-sex marriages and blessing of same-sex unions. This also allows those who do not wish to do so to refrain from using the Rites. If anyone has questions please contact me. Thank you Souper Sunday XIX Already?!! With the Christmas season upon us, it seems a little crazy to start talking about Saint David s Souper Sunday which coincides with the NFL s Super Bowl Sunday - February 4, However, this is a heads up that shortly after the holidays, we will be seeking out all of you soup chefs and bakers for this event. If you have any questions, please call David Livingston or Cathy Hinton at or by sending an to cathinton@att.net. 8
