1 SPECIAL EDITION JANUARY 2010 ST. DAVID S ANNUAL PARISH MEETING Sunday, January 10, :15 a.m. in the nave Mark the date and time for St. David s Annual Parish Meeting when we will elect four members to the Vestry Class of To be eligible to serve on the Vestry, one must be at least 18 years old, a confirmed Episcopalian, and a communicant of St. David s Church, having been either confirmed here or received by Letter of Transfer from another parish. Vestry members are expected: to be involved in the programs, activities, and spiritual life of the parish; to be regular in attendance and worship, to attend monthly Vestry meetings (held on the second Tuesday of the month), the annual Vestry retreat, and other meetings when scheduled; to practice proportionate giving with an awareness of the tithe as the biblical standard of giving; to assume a leadership role in the parish; and to be willing to serve as a liaison to a cluster or a committee. Please look closely at the enclosed biographical information of the slate which has been compiled by the Nominating Committee (the outgoing Vestry Class of 2009). According to our by-laws, one hundred persons constitute a quorum, eligible voters must be confirmed, must be 16 years of age, and must be present to vote. No proxy or absentee voting is allowed. 3 ANNUAL PARISH MEETING BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF NOMINEES FOR VESTRY JANUARY 10, 2010 HEATHER CASS Heather Cass, 37, is a wife and mother of two. Most of her formative years were in Macon, Georgia, where she met Michael and was married. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia and began working in marketing and advertising in Heather moved to Nashville after getting married and began working at The Tennessean. Her love of journalism and community-based marketing grew from there. In 2004, Heather and Michael decided that they would start their family. Olivia Grace was born on Dec. 9, 2004, and Sophie Lynn soon after on July 3, After Olivia saw a Christmas pageant at her grandmother's church Heather and Michael knew it was time to find their own church family. Memorial Day weekend of 2008, the Casses ventured through the neighborhood of West Meade and found their home at St. David's. LAURA DUKE I grew up in the Episcopal Church in Memphis. After moving to Nashville, we were thrilled to find St. David's. It has been our church home for 8 years now. It has been a wonderful support for my three children and me, especially over the past few years. I have belonged to a church choir as long as I can remember. God has blessed me with that talent and I love to share it with others. I have been active in our church choir since joining St. David's. I am also the director of the St. Francis children's choir and love working with the youngest choristers every week. I also help with the music during Children's Worship before Godly Play. I have recently become a lay reader and LEM and enjoy this ministry very much. I helped start the Bloomin' Onions and have enjoyed seeing this group grow. I was a member of the Monday morning Bible study for four years. I love the people of St. David's and am so glad to be a part of this fabulous community. I would be honored to serve on the Vestry. 3

4 HOWARD FOX A lifelong Episcopalian, I grew up in Memphis where I attended St. John s. I transferred my membership to St. David s in the fall of Since then I have served on the Vestry once, serving a year as Junior Warden and one as Senior Warden. I have been a member of the Altar Guild for two years and a member of the for one year. I have also served as a counter and usher coordinator. I am also a member of the Playground Committee. I am a graduate of Southern Methodist University, and I have recently returned to the film and video production business. I have two sons in college: Cal is a senior at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, majoring in Enterprise Management, and Howard, Jr., is a sophomore at U.T. with a double major in History and Education. STEPHEN JORDAN I m fairly new to Saint David s, having transferred my membership from Christ Church Cathedral in the fall of While I benefited greatly from the centering prayer (a religious discipline that I continue to practice on my own) group that met during the religious education hour, I had a felt need for the connectedness of a smaller parish, a connectedness I've found at Saint David s. In this regard I regularly attend the Adult Forum and the 10:30 service, and serve as a counter, LEM, and usher. I was also elected by the Vestry to fill an unexpired term left vacant by the resignation of Steve McElroy last August. Reared Methodist, I was confirmed at Saint Peter s Cathedral in Helena, Montana, having moved there in After visiting the local Methodist church and the local Lutheran church, I tried Saint Peter s, which was the first time I had ever been to an Episcopal service. There I felt the presence of the Lord and decided that this was the church for me. At Saint Peter s I graduated from EFM and served as Junior Warden and Senior Warden. Patricia and I were married in 1990 (we met in Helena). I work as a law librarian at Vanderbilt s law school, and Patricia, who is a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church, works part-time as associate director of a program that focuses on "rediscovering the art of making change without making enemies." The balance of her time is for print making and painting. Both of us have law degrees and are on inactive status with our respective bar associations. Working out, yoga, reading, and cooking are pastimes of mine. I'm honored to stand for election to a full term on the Vestry. 4

5 visitation of two slates of nominees for bishop when they visited the diocese in On August 31, I retired as the Circulation Librarian at Tennessee State University. I am currently volunteering at Alive Hospice in the library and will aid in registration at the next annual diocesan convention. ANNETTE PILCHER I have been a member of St. David s since During that time, I have seen many changes in St. David s and the national Church. I love St. David s as a Christian community that does God s work in the parish, the diocese, the National Church, and the world. Over the years, I have been awed at this gracefilled community that has the vision, passion, motivation, and willingness to serve our Lord Jesus Christ and our fellow men and women in this place and time. I look forward to more service with you in many capacities in the future. At St. David s I have had many challenges in ministry. I was the first woman usher and the first woman lay reader. In the mid 1990 s, I began thinking about a columbarium for the Church. Through a fortunate set of circumstances (persistence, a bequest, a building project, and an architect who saw the vision) the columbarium is now a reality. I am currently serving on the Columbarium Committee. I also saw the need at St. David s for a Daughters of the King Chapter. I am a charter member and served as President during the first years of the chapter. To this day the DOK is a fundamental part of my spiritual life. I have also served two previous terms on the Vestry, planned several adult education courses, chaired the thirtieth anniversary celebration, and have been involved in preliminary discussions about making St. David s greener. At the diocesan level, I was elected for two terms on the Bishop and Council. While on B &C, I served on the Finance Committee and was the liaison for missions. I was awarded a Bishop s Cross by Bishop Herlong in l have been a delegate from St. David s for three annual diocesan conventions, including the electing convention for the eleventh bishop of this diocese. From , I served on the Episcopate Committee. I chaired the working group for the 5

6 I have completed as of last October twenty years as an Executive Administrative Assistant to the Vice-President and Controller of Ingram Barge Company. I still enjoy my status as mother, grandmother, and now great-grandmother (although I contend to be too young for the G.G. status). DOTTY ROGERS My family and I moved to Nashville from Wichita, Kansas, in the summer of 1966 and joined St. David s soon after our arrival. The parish was so small at that time that our infant daughter, Kendra, spent her nursery years in the room that is now Father Rick s office. St. David s has supported my family as we celebrated our joys of birth and marriages and held us up through our sorrows. If I could serve this parish in a new capacity it would be an honor. Much has been given to me, and therefore there is much that I owe. Over the years we have watched as St. David s has grown from a small but very viable parish into a strong and active parish that we worship in today. During these years of our church s growth, I also grew from just being a mom of three very active children to being a very active communicant. I have served as St. David s Episcopal Church Women s President as well as being a representative of the UTO to the ECW Diocesan Board. I have served as Altar Guild Chairman and have served a term on St. David s Vestry. It has been a pleasure to serve on the Altar Guild for forty years and in recent years I have added my name as a member the Flower Guild. I spent many happy years singing in the choir, but due to family obligations had to give it up several years ago. One of the special projects that I have worked on at St. David s and am very proud of is the alms bags that are used each Sunday morning at the 10:30 service; the alms bags were a part of the original designs for St. David s. Husband Ken made the wooden ring holders from the original church drawings, and another church member and I made the needlepoint designs for the bags. After the needlepoint work was completed by several members of the church I completed the sewing of the bags which was then attached to the wooden rings. Jim Rayhab has done a magnificent job over the years of repairing the wooden parts when they have cracked after much use. I am on the Wedding Committee which hopefully makes Father Rick s life easier when conducting weddings. My greatest joy and honor is serving as a LEM to this parish. 6
