The latest news n GrecoTurks h affars, brought by the Wnrrlmoo, s ntensely nterestng. The Sultan has hurled defance n the teeth of the Powers and s ready for war. t appears thawthc Sultan has convnced hmself that the Powers wll not resort to coercon as decded, lest the concert of Europe be dssolved. On Sunday, July 3, he summoned a councl of mnsters for an extraordnary sttng at Ylldz Kosk, wth the result that after a heated dscusson a report was decded upon n favor of resumng hostltes f peace should not be concluded wthn a week. The Mnster of War has sent a telegram to Edhem Pasha announcng ths decson. Ths accords wth all the news re ceved for the last ten days. The Turks are rapdly strengthenng ther pos tons n Thessaly, mrtssng troops at Dhomoko, fortfyng Velestno, and n other ways entrenchng themselves frmly. The Thessaly harvest has al ready been reaped by Turksh solders and large quanttes of gran have been stored at Elason. Accordng to a crcumstantal re port n conversaton between the Sul tan and an offcer of hs household, bdul flamed complaned that the war had been forced upon hm, and when he was vctorous Europe refused hm ether terrtory or ndemnty. Therefore he ntended to resst to the utmost. He sad: "We have nothng to fear. These Powers faled to coerce Vassos and ls 2000 adventurers, so what can they do aganst 300,000 vctorous troops n Roumna? Supposng they wshed to coerce, who would undertake the task? f no concessons are made wthn a few days shall gve orders to advance. We can dctate our terms from the Acropols. Everythng 5s readv for mmedate ncton." The Sultan has dscussed the poss blty of Russa and Germany attemptng coercon, and declared that he was entrely ready to meet them. A dspatch from London, dated Julf, says: All the mornng papers com ment edtorally upon the new danger n the GrecoTurks h stuaton. The Marqus of Salsbury n the House.rf Lords yesterday (Tuesday) s regard ed as extremely grave, and as a clear ntmaton of the readness of Great Rrtan to lon n actve coorcon of the Sultan. Senator Davs, charman of the Commttco on Foregn Relatons, has called a meetng of the commttee for Frday, July 9, for the purpose of consderng the Hawaan annexaton treaty. t s the ntenton of the tronds of annexaton to report the treat. ll EEHE FAVORTE STYLE NOW X VOGUE X HONOLULU. Mr. Grace s gong to the States shortly and wll brng down hs own buldng materal along wth a shpment of cattle n a salng vessel whch he has chartered. Durng the past year nearly all the resdences erected n Honolulu have been modeled more or less after the style of archtecture n vogue durng Washngtons and Jeffersons admnstratons and especally after the more tropcal Southern homes of Maryland and the two Vrgnas. A wrter on esthetcs would say that the stylo was adopted by Honolulus annexatonsts unconscously through ther natural orgn and aspratons toward Amercan deals; but the less sentmental owners saw beauty and congruty n the broad, cool verandas and shady portcos and ther general adaptablty for the tropcs. Broad portcos occupy nearly oneha lf of the floor area of John Graces new twelveroo house, termnatng n a large Venetan blnded lana. The columns and detals of these portcos have been desgned wth much study by Archtect Dunn. These portcos support pedments, or gables, contanng the sleepng apartments wth all ther necessary appurtenences. Each gable s releved by a trple wndow openng to the floor and out upon n deck over the portcos n front. Projectng balcones are enclosed wth balustrades and ornamented by terra cotta vases for fernery on the sdes. There s n twelvefoo t portco n front of the house. A large starcase wll extend up from the large recepton hall on the man floor. THER MNDS SET OX T. Rachelors Wll Compete Wth the Benedcts n Crcket. Captan Rosehlll Found Evdence of Brtsh Warshp Havng Taken Possesson of the Palmyra slands. Captan Rosehlll of the lttle schoon er Norma, whle crusng about among the Soutl Sea slands on the long voy ge whch ended yesterday, becured suffcent evdence to warrant the be lef that England has been takng formal possesson of u number of small fertle slands lu that porton of the globe, wthout stoppng to nqure who the owners mght be. There are many lagoon slands that are very fertle, but unnhabted. These are now beng brought under cultvaton for Englsh companes, who nre plantng cocoanut groves and other tropcal fruts for the export trade. The most marked evdence of Englsh possesson was found on the Palmyra group, stuated n somethng lko lattude 5 N, and longtude 130 W. Ths s consdered tle more remarkable because the slands, whch arc of the lagoon formaton and some fourteen n number, have been owned by the Hawaan Government snce 1802, and nre publshed as such n South Sea sland geographes. They were taken possesson of formally n the name of the Hawan Government c 1S02 by a master marner who was gven to explorng, At that tme a house was erected on the largest sland, vegetables planted about, the place, and n whte man and several natves landed there as a colony. The venture dd not succeed at the tme and all evdence of the old dwellng has dsappeared. " had not vsted Palmyra sland for perhaps a dozen years untl Mr. Cozens, a planter who came wth me from Hull slnnd, and T went ashore there a few weeks ago," sad Captan Rosehlll, last evenng. "Almost the frst thng that attracted our attenton on the sland was the remnant of an old flag pole, at the foot of whch a proclamaton, wrtten on cloth, but for the most part, effaced by the weather, was naled to a stout pece of planknt". Our frends have pulled us nobly through and the clause for contnung the recprocty treaty after dsappearng for a tme, came up and took ts place frmly n the fnal draft of the bll. Prosperty s assured for Hawa untl the greater era of prosperty shall come under the far more ntmate relaton of annexaton. TWO SDES. There are two sdes to the annexaton queston, the Amercan and Hawaan. The vews are entrely dstnct but they work to the same end. The sde of the Unted States looks to commercal advantage, as n the State of Calforna and along the Pacfc coast generally, and much more to natonal prestge and the lnes of true broad statesmanshp, both there and n the rest of the States, where the personal commercal argument cuts less fgure. The mportance of the slands as the key of the Pacfc s now fully apprecated throughout the Unted States. t s mportant now, t wll be doubly mportant when the Ncaragua canal s bult, and that that wll be bnlt, s a foregone concluto n. The annexaton of the slands s but a part of a great scheme whch the Unted States must carry out, or t must gve up all hope of supremacy n the Pacfc ocean. As Senator Frye says, the statesmen of the past had but a fant dea of the mportance of the Pacfc ocean. t was only a greamu d here and there that could project tself nto the future. Such foresght had Webster, Marcy and Blane. Now, t s patent to all. But commercally and from a mltary pont of vew, the slands are a necessty to the Unted States. The mass of the people so understand t, the majorty of the newspapers favor t and the majorty of the Senate and the House of Representatves thoroughly apprecate the mportance of t. Ether by treaty or by jont resoluton, annexaton wll come, whatever mght be the opnon of the slands. "Annexaton" sad Captan C. D. Grdle y, who was on the Gaelc on hs way to take charge of the U. S. S. Olympa, "annexaton s as sure as stand upon ths deck." From the Hawaan standpont, annexaton s the only thng that wll gve peace and stablty to the country. F6r the past seventeen years the slands have been n a seethng, dssatsfed state. The monarchy, whch had been totterng all through the regn of Kalakau a. and whch would have fallen n 1887, had t not yelded to the demands of a justly ncensed people came to an end sx years later. There has been and s a great dvson among the people. There are those here now, who, had they the power, would overthrow the present prosperous coudtou of affars to gratfy ther spte; vertable nhlsts, who pull down wthout any noton of what they may be able to buld up. There wll ever be a struggle for power here, and each change wll tend towards the downward grade of the commercal prosperty of the slands. Then agan, once the protectng hand of the Unted States s taken from us and we are a prey to any power that may wsh to absorb us. Wthout the ad of n sngle warshp the slands could be quetly orentnlzcl, and wth a sngle warshp they could be forcbly orentalzed. What would become of the natve race under such crcumstances? There would be none of the knd feelng and tender care whch s and would be exercsed towards them by a government of AngloSaxon s. A lttle study of affars n Formosa can throw a brllant flash of lght upon what they may expect. To the Hawaan, as to the commercal man upon these slands, annexaton s the only soluton of the present problem. Wth annexaton there wll be assured peace, and the feversh and heated condtons tnder whch we now lve, wll be succeeded by a calm whch wll allow every one to go about hs busness quetly, knowng that the Central government wll gve ample protecton from foes ether at home or abroad. There s one cure for all our lls. The hostng of the Stars and Strpes. NOT TRUE. The mschevous statement s beng crculated along the streets by some royalsts that the Hawaan wll be put nto the poston of the negro, f we are annexed to the Unted States. How nfamous and untrue such a statement s, s planly repled to by facts. What Hawaan s not treated wth every courtesy n the hotels of San Francsco. The Occdental, the Palace, the Grand, the Calforna all receve them wth as much respect as they do the vstors from any other naton. Hawaan and Part Hawaan lades are receved wth courtesy and are sought after n socety, and what s true of San Francsco s true of Washngton and other ctes. s there gong to be a change because of annexaton? Far from t. The people of the Unted States admre the Hawaan, treat hm as a frend and equal, and whoever says the contrary, knows that he states what s untrue, and only says t to make mschef, and create Such a course la The Mnster of Foregh Affars wll gve the publc access to the correspondence on the Japanese mbroglo at an early date. At the present tme he s awatng the arrval of an mportant letter whch may be receved by almost any mal. Annexaton does not look such a dead ssue as ts enemes wsh t to be. Frday, July 9, may have been a day pregnant wth mportance to the Hawaan slands. "How can Schllnys Best tea cost so lttle and be so good?" TK HAWAAN STAR, JULY 16, SUGAR le fl El WASHNGTON, June Desperate 1110:1118 tro bcty resorted to by the Sugar Trust nud the beet sugar nterest to defeat the Hawaan annexaton treaty. There s ground for the asserton that money wll be Used wthout stnt to llluonee the Senate aganst ratlleaton. Traces of t have already begun to appear. Should the sugar combne persst n the campagn upon whch they have entered the dlsemson of. the treaty next wnter wll be the occason of a scandal exceedng all the other sugar scandals of recent years. No tme has been lost n gettng n the work aganst the treaty. t s loss than a fortnght snce the Presdents message was sent to the Senate, and n that tme several Senators have been approached n n way whch loaves no doubt as to the plan of acton of the opponents of annexaton. There has boon a conference wthn the last few days n whch severl Northwestern Senators took part. t was a secret conference, and the plans of the sugar barons wore fully dscussed. Just what was the nature of the arguments employed need not be nqured nto too closely, but when the conference broke np t was wth the understandng that those present should vote aganst the treaty, although they had htherto, wth one excepton, boon supposed to. favor annexaton. They wore all slver men, and they are nl n close stouch wth the sugar rng. Tt s not beleved by the frends of annexaton that the mercenary tactcs of the opposton can preval n the end. for there s a large majorty n the Senate favorable to annexaton, Youd stop that leak nstantly. ow about your house? s there any leakage there? A house s really a puree wth lots of money n t. Ths wet weather s hard on your roof and unless properly looked after every cent worth wll leak out. Better see me whch cannot be brought now. over by such appeals as are beng made by the sugar people. Ths majorty s not twothrd s, and t may be that ratfcaton of the treaty may be prevented by tamperng wth Senators who would naturally support t, but annexaton can be brought about n u more drect and speedy way, and f t twothrdshould appear that a s majorty could not be had for ratfcaton, the Admnstraton could carry out ts purpose by means of such a bll as was ntroduced n the Senate by Morgan of Alabama last week, ncorporatng n a legslatve enactment the man provsons of the treaty. Such a bll would pass both House and Senate wth lttle trouble, for there are ffty votes of the eghtynn e n the Senate whch wll stand by annexaton n any guse, and the annexatonsts have an even larger majorty n the House.
