Taylor Descrbes the Fearful Experence of the Voyage Out Wll Load Anmals Here. The transport "Slam" whch encouered a fearful typhoon on ts frst trp to Manla, arrved n Honolulu early ths mornng 27 days from Manla. The long trp was due to strong head wnds durng the ere voyage. She carres a Unted States mall. t s expected that a return cargo ot anmals wll be taken from Honolulu nstead of returnng to San Francs co. The Sam s ofllcered as follows: Captan Aono Valen; Frst OHcer --xgga; Second OHcer Stepanovlch; wth tho vessel s Dr. Lyman Bshon. Unted States Veternary Surgeon, who accompaned the anmals of the frst voyage, Albert P. Taylor, quarter master s departme. Mr. Taylor remans n Honolulu wll not return to Manla on the Slam's next trp. He states that one typhoon s all that le desres to experence, es peclally such a one as struck the Slam n the Chna Sea on the 1st of October. whch klled 365 out of a total of 375 anmals on board. The frst maton they had of the typhoon was on the nght of September 30th when a terrfc wnd sea suddenly struck the shp the Captan turned the Slam o the teeth of the storm followng the cr cular course of the storm when the typhoon was seemngly at the heght of ts fury the shp was approach ng the ceer of t, the Sam became utterly unmangeable,, although steamng at forced speed, she tossed helplessly n the terrble cross seas for over fve hours: t was at ths juncture that the captan gave orders to batten down all the hatches; ths was done as a last resort to save the Bhlp, as t was felt that the closng of the hatches mea death to the anmals n the low er holds, even though they were not klled outrght by the force of the storm; heavy seas swept across the decks carryng away everythng; the vessel rolled heavly from sde to sde dppng seas at the brdge at every roll; the barometer fell 72 pos, ndcatng the shp's close proxmty to the ceer of the dreaded typhoon. Upon arrval at Manla several an mals had to be shot all but one of the others ded of ther njures at the corrals. That one was a burro that dur ng the typhoon was n some way thrown down an open hatch o the coal bunkers was found two days later unnjured. t was the frst great dsaster n the transport servce the loss or the anmals was keenly feu n army crcles, captan O Nell, quar termaster of the Slam, however, sad he was thankful that he was able to brng hs men the shp o port safely. The Austran olncers behaved wth re markable bravery coolness durng the typhoon, never quttng the brdge ul the storm was over. The mass of wreckage the dead anmals were cast overboard before reachng Manla. but even n Manla Bay several anmals were thrown over; the smashed lfe boats were dsposed of, at prese the Slam shows few sgns of ts strug gle for the mastery. The Slam brngs a crew of Flpno fremen they have proven them selves equal to the task; they have strct regard for the dscplne of the shp have gven no trouble what ever on the voyage. The former crew mutned durng the typhoon the rngleader came very near beng strung up by the thumbs to the rggng by Captan O'Nel. When the shp left Manla lttle fght ng was beng done, except on the south lne, near mus; at ths po General Schwan had severely punshed the rebels; near Cavlte, the marnes had petty engagemes almost every day, but no ptched battles were fought. At Caloocan, Malolos La Loma, the Flpnos had been especally actve about October 9th; a general attack was made along the Amercan lnes; a battery of lght artllery at La Loma however, effectvely shelled the rebel poston at 1000 yards dslodged them, forcng a general retreat; ths attack was made by General Plar, t s tnought he has ere charge of operatons on the north, a concesson evdely of Agulnaldo to stmulate ac ton. JOUBERT HAS T PRACTCALLY SURROUNDED. Brtsh Evacuate Colenso Boers nvade Capo Colony ts Leavng Ladysmlth. LONDON, November 4. The evacuaton of Colenso s undoubtedly a most serous matter for the Brtsh n Natal, as t not only testfes to tho complete nvestme of Ladysmlth by the Boers, but makes the relef of General Sr George Stewart Whte an extremely dlflcult operaton. Colenso s the po where the ralway from Ladysmlth cosses the Tugela rver, whch s now n flood. The town tself s ot small mportance. t s domnated by the hlls on the north sde of the rver, so was uenable f the Boers have advanced, as they seem to have done. LONDON. November 4. The serous ness of the evacuaton, les n the fact that Comman-Gener- al Jou-ber- t. whle completely nvestng Sr George Whte Ladysmlth, can seze the Tugela brdge,, f he has sut flcle troops, can detach a force send t southward on Pletermartzburg, ard, n any case, by destroyng the brdge ralway, can preve any lellef expedton reachng Sr George Whte for some tme. Mltary men optmstcally predct that General Joubert wll wthdraw from Natal mmedately Sr Redvers Buller's force eers the Orange Free State, but the latter cannot be far on hs way, lor at least three or four weeks, even then General Joubert may not decde to ercept the Brtsh on the Free State s open veldt, whch would sut the Brtsh admrably, but he may wat ul the last mome, then proceed by tran back to Pre--! tora, take up strong defensve stons po- on the range of hlls lyng n fro of Johannesburg Pretora. Thus General Joubert mght reman n Natal several weeks longer endeavor ng to force Sr George Whte o ca ptulaton, the destructon of the Tugela rver brdge helpng hm n cuttng off Brtsh relef. Another Boer force s reported to have marched through Zulul n the drecton of Durban already to have reached the Natal froer. Thus, the poston n Natal, s most dsquet ng. Brtsh renforcemes n any eve cannot reach Durban before the end of next week. The news that Colenso has been eva cuated s arousng fear that the Coneal statemes of the second serous defeat of General Whte may prove true, LtVNDON, November 4. At Plymouth t s rumored that the channel squadron wll be ordered to the Cape, where a great naval force s to be con cerated, wth a vew of establshng a cordon from the mouth of the Orange rver to Delagoa bay to preve the lng of supples for the enemy, wth a vew also,f necessary, of l ng guns to assst the Brtsh forces. Accordng to dspatches fled Tuesday, defensve works were beng constructed on ths hlls around Ladysmlth, t was expected there that the bg naval guns would be moued the followng day. Tho Boers were threatenng to attack the town n force Wednesday Thursday, tho women chldren other were beng se by tran To the south Ladysmlth s provsoned for two mohs. LONDON, November 3. n the fght at Farquhar's farm n whch three battalons were captured by the Boers, the Brtsh lost 57 klled, 227 wounded 3 mssng besdes the loss of con mssoned offcers. General Joubert has wrtten General Whte protestng ngalnst tho use of lyddte. The Boer losses shout Ladysmlth are estmated at 95 klled 200 wounded. LONDON, November 4. Brtsh troopshp Pepldan, damaged, has had to return to Lverpool. The Klldon Castle has left wth 3000 troops on board. Large lleet assemblng off At rcan coast to preve supples eer ng Transvaal. At the Cabnet meetng ths mornng the Mnster of eror was nstructed to delay acton ul he had agan heard from the Councl. The reason for tho delay s the pecu lar condton of the ttle to the l water rghts concerned. t appears that the property was orgnally deeded to the Amercan Board of Mssons for educatonal purposes only. Subseque ly t was deeded to the Departme of Educaton upon the same terms. t has occurred to the Governme that f t leased the property to a concern wthout any remuneraton therefor the sprt of ths deed would not be compled wth. Jeffres Does Hs Work n the Frst Two Last Three Rounds Not Wholly Sastlfactory. RNGSDE, Coney sl Sportng Club, New York, November 3. James J. Jeffres retans the champonshp of the world, Referee George Sler gvng hm the decson at the end of the 25th round over Salor Tom Sharkey, at the Coney sl Sportng Club tonght. t was one of the most marvelous battles that has ever taken place, the greatest crowd that ever gathered n the' desperate struggle for supremacy. n Ave rounds Jeffres had the better of the fght n the frst two the last three. Durng the other 20 Sharkey forced the ssue,, lke a bull terrer, was at hs man wth both hs unceasngly. n those 20 rounds Jeffres' great weght brawn helped hm to hold off the salor, n the 22d round he swung n a couple of vcous upper-cut- s that made Sharkey groggy. Tom came back agan n the 24th 25th, but he was weakened greatly by Jeffres' vcous blows. One mnute before the gong sounded to end the fght, Jeffres left glove came off, practcally the coest was over. The referee motoned to Jeffres, corner, an Amercan Hag was flung over the champon's shoulders, the crowd on that sde end of the arena cheered wldly. The crowd on the opposte sde end, n Sharkey's corner, yelled for Sharkey, the men were led back to ther dressng-room- s. The thouss of spectators were banked 40 feet hgh n the buldng, the place beng packed from rngsde to rafters, the asles around the rng were lned. The tremendous crowd sweated under the glare of 400 arc lghts. Ffteen feet or less from the canvas of the squared crcle the heat was ense. The fghters were almost exhausted, the spectators shreked themselves hoarse. t seemed at frst as though t would be a short lght, for n the second round Jeffres put the salor to the ropes wth a left on the Jaw the referee began to call off the seconds as Shavkey kneeled on the lloor. But from the thrd round on Sharkey, wth hs vcous swngs to the rbs the Jaw, kept the crowd on ts feet watng for a knockout. Jeffres stood the turrlllc runlshne, wth hs eye, nose und ear splt, came buck Just us vcously n the lust three rounds und ulmost retreved hmself. Then came the unfortunate unsatsfactory endng, Jeffres' glove lvng off, brngng the fght to un end, although the crowd urged Sharkey to rush n end t. Ths he tred to do, but Jeffres fought hm back Heferee Sler rushed to the rescue. was t notcenble that Jeffres used weght hs to ts best advaage, throwng hmself all over the salor, but the latter dd hs share of the huggng, too, both were warned repeatedly. Ten thous spectators gathered around the rngsde. Though Coney sl was swept by a gale, the cars came down crowded to the guards n a swftly movng lne, the sports waded to the narrow erances leadng to the arena. At 8:30 there were 5000 n the buldng, later the boxes flled to overflowng. Jeffres led several tmes but was One 24"x4S" Sugar Mll wth Engne Gearng complete. Smth who now assumes the edtorshp of the mornng paper The Star extends the h of frendshp, knowng that whatever dfferng opnons there may "be between the two papers, the vews wll be argued as gelemen should argue, the bond of professonal unon never be broken. t s curous how the nnate babarlsm of man wll blaze forth n spte of nl the veneer of cvlzaton wth whch we cover hs naturally brutal nature. t s customary to derde the Spansh natons for ther love of bull fghtng, but t s questonable whether any bull fght n more brutal than a couple of sluggers poundng ther faces to a Jelly, splttng ther ears Hps coverng themselves wth gore, whle thouss of spectators were on ther feet, yellng howlng lke fends at every brutal tlow. t s probably no use commeng upon the tastes of a race or of a tme. Comme wll not alter man's nature, but at least we need not try to put on such a toga, of vrtue. Why even here, the news about tre prze lght was of more erest would sell better than the news of ether vctory or dsaster n the Transvaal or Luzon. THE WAR. serous results n the northern part of Cape Colony. The Boer success wll have to be pushed to the utmost up to the 18th or 20th of ths moh. After that the forces at the comm of General Sr Redvers Buller wll begn to tell. But should the Boers succeed n blowng up the ralway brdge at Colenso there wll be very serous dffculty n conveyng troops across the Tagela rver, whch s now stated to be n flood. t s a curous thng to note that the navy s wnnng laurels on l, that great dependence s beng placed upon the naval force to assst the l forces. n the rece war wth Span t was the Amercan Navy that had the cream of the honors. t seems as f the free lfe of the sea suted the men of the Anglo-Saxo- n race that t produced a class of fghtng men self rela offcers, whch t s hard to beat. Great Brtan s evdely n for a very serous war no one, even of the great statesmen can safely predct where t may spread to. There are great eves n store n the womb of tme. CHANGNG SCHOOL HOURS. t s to be hoped that the teachers to whom the queston of changng the school hours s propounded, wll nnswer fearlessly ther own opnon wll not reply accordng to what they thnk the commssoners the offcals of the Board would lke. There s always a danger n ths drecton when people, who are depende on ther postons for ther dally bread, are asked an opnon by those n whose hs the postons He. But the queston, after all, of change n school hours should not He wth the teachers. t s not ther convenence that s sought, t s the convenence of the general publc that should bo consdered. Wll or wll not the change be benefcal to them. At ths po must be consdered the convenence of the poor, not the convenence of the rch, for the mass of the pupls who attend the publc schools belong to pares who are not burdened wth too many of ths world's goods. f we consder ths class of people take the trouble to make frends of therr learn somethng of th'elr home lfe we wll fnd that every member of the famly has to share n the general work. Much of ths work has to be done n the mornng. The grls of the famly, especally, have to assst n the early household dutes. The father of the famly has to. get up early n order to get to hs work by seven. Hs break fast has to bo prepared as soon as that rush s over, the house has to be set n order. These people have no servas, but they take a prde n havng ther rooms tdy clean. One cannot detal all the dutes whch fall upon the mother chldren but they are numerous, they take tme. t s a fact that wll bo supported by many teachers that the chldren who Work have the hardest struggle possble to get through wth ther work, clean up get to school n proper tme. n deed n some cases t s mpossble for the chldren to be on tme. There are other objectonable features n the proposed change whch mght be dscussed but the clams of the hard workng poor sholld be paramou, should receve-- fur more atteon than that of any other part of the commun ty.
