Oppressed Race lencft to Hawa. Star Newspaper: The artcles n your columns concernng the mmgra ton of the rmenans to these slands are well worth the thoughtful attenton of the Government and planters. My acquantance wth these people mpresses me wtl the fact that no foregn laborers brought to these shores would be of greater credt to ths country and Government. They are an ndustrous, ntellgent peaceful and a home-lovn- g people. They are dstngushed for ther laborous character. n spte of the hndrances that have been rased aganst them they have been the commercal masters of sa mnor. They are. the merchants, the sklled artsans and agrculturalsts of that country. The unjust taxes whch the avarcous offcer exacts from then, at hs own wll, would have klled the energy and ndustry of a weaker people. The rmenan dares not utter word of pro-- y test ngalns lese burdensome ttxes", else he would have been the subject of cruel lashes and some part, f not all of hs property would be confscated. Yet. he plods 0, only to be robbed-agan-. t people who, after fve centures jf oppresson and persecuton, wll stll hold to ther prncple of freedom and Chrstan professon, show what stuff they are made of. The fanatcal and lazy Turk, n hs dsdan, may call hm a "Chrstan Slave," but n ntellgent communtes he s called a "freeman and equal." nd as a freeman and equal he must be treated. They are free from any characterstcs whch would arouse the prejudce of a western mnd, such, for n- - stance, as s now held toward the satcs, or even the colored lalxrers of the Southern States. The rmenans arc not an satc people n the sense n whch that term s at present used. s a race they belong to the ryan or the stock, ndo-europe- the same stock from whch the Greeks. Celts and nglo-saxon- s orgnally came. Hence they possess much the san-- r character whch these natons have shown. They are not so deeply bound to ther old customs and tradtons as to hnder them from enterng nto the sprt, and untng readly wth western thought and progressheness. They are teachable and amenable to reasonable treatment. Wherever they have gone they have made for themselves a most eomendable record. Ther relgous nature unted wth ther enterprsng character would make them a valuable addton to any country. They would undoubtedly play nn mportant part n the moral and materal progress of these slands f they could be nduced to come here. J NO. M. LEWS. ENEFT SHOW. Between tle arrval of the Marposa on Thursday of last week and up to the departure of the ustrala yesterday, there were sojournng n Hono lulu two fugtves from justce. Whether these men are gulty of the crme of murder or merely assault, s not known n these parts. The men themselfes possess no knowledge of the flnnl fate of ther vctm. t all happened up n the cattle re gon of Northern Montana. Benjamn Porter and.lolm Kellogg were em ployed by a large cattle outft n the "cow-puncherscapacty of." Porter, who aspred to hgher thngs than drvng cows nnd rdng buckng bronchos all hn!f, had been n resdent of tle stnt for over fve years up to the tme of the trouble and he was well lked by the cowboys. n the early part of tle present month there occurred a dance at one of tle ranch houses n the wlds of Montana and Porter nnd Kellogg were patrons of the event. There was a far-sze- d gatherng at the dance, peo ple comng from mles around to attend the affar. Thngs were "slow" untl a row broke out n one corner of the dance room well along toward mdnght. Porter and another man hud got ten nto a dspute over whch one was properly enttled to a dance wtl a far daughter of the great state of Montana. Words led up to blows and the young lady, for whose company the row was started, ted down the room.screamng at the top ot her voce. Kellogg rushed to hs partners ad. He found Porter lyng on tle lloor under the feet of hs assalant. n an other nstant Porter had reganed hs feet and was makng vtal attacks on hs antagonst wtl a large jack-knf- e. Porters enemy receved a deep stab n tle abdomen and le fell to the loor. n the confuson that followed and Kellogg escaped. They ther horses and rode out of the country, headng for the Pacfc coast. bandonng ther horses n daho, they made for Sun Francsco by ral, reachng that cty n tme to board the Marposa on ts voyage to Honolulu and the Colones. fter leavng tle scene of the trouble Porter made the startlng dscovery that two of hs rbs had been broken. They were very panful and t was an effort for hm to le down. The purpose of ther vst was to nduce Consul Wlder to ssue them a passport. fter gvng llettous names Porter, who was the spokesman, explaned to the Consul that they were short of funds but that they would be all rght after they landed n Honolulu, as he, Porter, was gong nto the law busness. Stll, Consul Wlder was opposed to ssung a passport to the men, fearng that Porter would not be a success altogether as a counsellor at law. But wth the assurance from Porter that n ease he faled at law he could surely get a job heavng coal, havng had consder able experence n ths lne, the Hawaan Consul ery reluctantly ssued tle passports to the men. Upon reachng Honolulu tle men were perfectly charmed wth the place. " just want to lve and de here," was a remark made by Porter to frend n ths cty to whom he had confded hs plku. But Porter soon dscovered that there was no openng n the law busness for hm, and falng to get a coal heang job, both men pcked up ther traps and left for San Francsco yesterday on the ustrala. They wll work ther way down nto Mexco, and wll reman away from the States for a tme at least. Porter and KeTfogg were runnng short of funds and fearng a term on the reef, should they le unsuccessful n securng work (so they sad) they decded to use what money they had and get nto some other country where the laws were not so strct.
