Attempt of Several Women to Smuggle Themselves Aboard the alenca Extraordnary lgllence to Prevent t. There Were a number of attempts to stowaway on the transport alenca and most of the wouldb e stowaways were women. Tle dscovery of tlls fact led to the keenest vglance on the part of the offcers of the shp and of tle mltary and the strctest orders on Sunday that no one who dd not belong to the shps complement of crew or solders should be allowed aboard. The dscovery was made through a ludrcrous ncdent. A good many of the solders had made purchases here for the trp and qute a number of them had provded themselves wth bags as n convlent receptacle for carryng and keepng together ther purchases. When salng orders were gven these were stowed away below decks n the mens quarters. A negro solder who was dong ths stowng away came across a bag wth a hole n t from whch protruded u par of corsets. He reported the matter to hs commandng offcer and a thorough search was made of the shp, resultng n the dscovery of one far stowaway and several bags whch ndcated that, there were others comng. The women had adopted ths means of gettng ther belongngs uboard. n colluson, no doubt wth acquantances they had made among the solders. Captan Lane and Major Morton nt once ordered the most vgorous search of the shp to make t absolutely sure that none had escaped dscovery, and ssued orders aganst allowng anyone aboard who dd not belong there. So strct were the precautons they took. that they even refused to take wth them the solders left over by tle Sherdan. Publc opnon s well behnd the board, and t need fear no complant as long as t remans frm and takes proper precauton. People here, very thoroughly realze how great the danger from plague s, and know what a panc would take place were ever a case to develop here. We are so stuated that we can keep the enemy out wth comparatve ease, though wth dscomfort to some pleople. Hut famlarty must m ths case never breed contempt. t was slght carelessness whch caused the outbreak n enna that entaled the loss of three lves, even though the most.prompt measures were taken. f t ever passed the vglance of our quarantne t would not be caught and stopped so readly as t was n enna. The reports of the lava flows are somewhat ndefnte up to the present. Accordng to the news by the Knau, the How towards Kau has decreased, whle that towards Hllo seems to have ncreased. f ths s so, the present flow s smlar to that of 1SS1. At that tme there was a short How towards Kau, whch stopped, whle that towards Hllo contnued for months. The fact that tte flow has started hgh up the mountan s n favor of a long perod of actvty. The poston of men who shne n athletcs n our unverstes s not al ways understood by outsders. Tho dea prevals that men devote them elves to athletcs to the neglect of ther atudles. The dea s an erroneous one. A man cannot shne n athletcs, unless he s well up n hs college work. How. erer good an athlete he may be, unless he passes hs examnatons satsfactorly, he cannot enter nto the representatve varsty athletc teams. Thus athletcs are wsely made the spur to urge the ambtous youth to work. Tere used to be an dea that the readng man must be round shouldered, pectacled.paleandehambllng.and that the actve, broad shouldered, strong ncwed man must necessarly bo a dunce. But we havo lenrned a great deal better than that. Because a man can captan a baseball team, or pull a good oar, or wn a mle race, or a tenns champonshp, he need not be the less a mathematcan, or be a dunce n class cs, or a duffer at law. Bshop Wlls s none the worse theologan because he pulled n hs varsty eght, nor was uaustono a worse orator or a less sound fnancer, because he could fell a tree at threescore. n fact t ought to stand to reason that the healther and stronger the anmal, tho more powerful and well balanced should hs bran be. To foster the bran nt the expense of the body s manfestly absurd, to foster the body at the expense of the mnd, would bo etuully absurd, but to combne the two, and to cultvate both mnd and body, so as to get the best out of each, s surely the wse and the sensble course. t s upon, such, llnes that presdents and.facultlesj ofu(nverlte8 now. work. They tdrlve to turn out men havng neutfm nhtne n torporjhufl caul, pound mnds n sound bodes. They do not desplhe HthletUM. on the other hand they do not rncrlllce health to learnng. We may feel nut lulled that when our wns dstngush themselves on the campus, they have dstngushed themselves wall n tho schools. PKOSPKlTS. The fart thnt Senator Cullom has sent Secretary Hay of the nterstate Commerce Commttee to seek for further nformaton upon our labor condtons shows how alve to the possble struggle aganst the admsson of Hawa as a terrtory our fjjuujsjn, thp, sannte and n tle House are. The hboroucrtlnn s gong to bo the lever used aganst us, and t wll, n nl probablty bo ser the commssoner that we have been makng use of our perod of probaton and that we are no longer puttng our hope n labor from the Orent, but that we have gone to the Occdent to obtan the same class of mmgrant whch s weekly pourng nto the Unted States, through the port of New York. That the change may prove more costly, apparently. s true, but the talan laborer wll, n the long run, prove more remuneratve than the Orental. Dr. Maxwell, n a report to the Department of State, showed that the cheap laborer s by no means the cheapest n the end. The talan can do far more work than the Orental can accomplsh, man for man, therefore t wll requre less men for the same amount of work. That the talans can work n our clmate, and that the heat s not too great for them, has been proved by the experment made by S. M. Damon on hs estate at Moanalua. The men he has engaged fnd the clmate well suted to them, and have no such extremes of heat as they used to experence upon the plafns of ther natve Lombardy. Ths wns an dea not thought of when the commsson was here, and now, though not completed t s well underway. Ths wll serve to show our readness to adapt ourselves to the new and changed condtons, and wll serve as a counter to some of the attacks. Snce the commssoners, vsted the slands there has also been great expanson of area of cultvaton, and new enterprses have sprung up upon all the slands. The fact that we were annexed, and that revolutons and revolutonary poltcs had become a dream of the past, caused a very healthy expan. son to take place. Poltcal safety means publc confdence, and confdence means commercal progress, and commercal progress means gettng upon a level wth the most advanced states. Here agan s somethng that the commssoners must be thoroughly nformed upon, for t s one of the many tlngs that may be advanced aganst us. They want to know as accurately as possble, what work has been ntated snce the commssoners were here, what prospects there are for further expanson, what amount of labor wll be requred to carry the enterprses out, and n what drecton are we lookng for that labor supply. These thngs must be known thoroughly and t s fortunate that so able a man as Mr. Hay has to conduct the nvestgatons and make the reports. Mr. Hay s no stranger to the slands, he has vsted them before and n conversant wth our condtons. He can Judge better than anyone what the prospects are here, and how we propose to make use of our prosperty. t s for hm to judge upon ths pont, and as soon as he las collected hs nformaton he wll make full report to the commsson. Knowng us as well as he does, he can gve us advce as to what course we should take, and advce comng from Mr. Hay, wth the means he has of knowng what s gong on n Congress) wll be well worth consderng.
