Men were busy unloadng bags of coffee, whle others were engaged preparng bags, contanng the hghest grades of Hawaan coffee, ncludng JCona, llamakua, Laupahoehoc and Waanae, for shpment. The attenton of other workmen was centered upon the machnery n operaton. From the front door to ths back door, from the basement to the top floor, can be found machnery n runnng order, and other appurtenances for the handlng of coffee, whch are full of nterests. The mll s turnng out a far number of bags now and t s ncreasng as each day passes. The coffee brought up from the. wharf where t has been landed by tle sland steamers, s frst weghed and pled up n a corner of the frs; floor. When t s needed t, s placed on a large elevator operated by electrcty and carred to the second floor, where t s examned. Tf t las not been sutllceutly dred t s taken to the dryng rooms on the thrd foor and spread out over the floors to dry. The coffee s always thoroughly washed and cured before t s shpped from the plantaton. When the dryng process las been gone through- the coffee s forced through a slute, whch carres t to the second floor. When the coffee s n proper condton to start out on ts errand through the mll t s dumped nto a mammoth hopper, whch has a capacty of 7. bags and stuated on the second floor. t passes through a coder nto an elevator, whch carres t to a large four-cylndsewrator. Here the dust, stones, chps of wood and other refuse s taken from the coffee, whch passes on nto the huller, a prodgous bulk of machnery on the frst floor. Whle n the frst cylnder the bean s rnhhrd of ts parchment, whch passes through an exhaust nto a huge box and ultmately fnds ts way nto a rubbsh, ljarrf statoned outsde of the buldng. The bean passes on through a small openng whch s regulated by a weght attachment allowng the proper number of beans to go nto the second cylnder of the huller, where the polshng operaton takes place. ; Already cleaned and polshed, the coffee s pcked up by a second elevator, whch carres t to the second floor agan, where the separator, or grader s located. Here the dust or other partcles adherng to the coffee are frst separated. These fnd, ther way down one of eght slutes runnng from the grader. There was some dscusson on ths matter. Some were postve that Mr. Goodwn would consent to come, pro vdng a surety of $2,.r00 was gven. t was then voted to choose an executve commttee, whch would have temporary charge of the amusement company, and would endeavor to establsh a reasonable guarantee fund. K. C. Macfarlane, F. M. Swanzy, Harry Von Holt, J. F. Drown nnd tobert Scott were selected for ths commttee. Von Holt was n favor of ths dea, and stated that the shareholders need not ncorporate, but go n on a partnershp plan. t was then decded to establsh a guarantee fund of $5000 by sellng shares at $0 each. C, A. Drown wshed the prvlege of llrst choce of seats be gven the shareholders. He beleved t would have a tendency to nduce many outsders to purchase shares. Thomas Wall endorsed ths plan, as t would be gvng some beneft to those people who, by rskng ther money n a guarantee md, make t possble for good companes to play the slands. L. M. Vettlesen, J. F. Drown, J. G. Dothwelf, Porter lloyd and nnny others favored ths dea. Colonel Fsher was decdedly opposed to t, however. The ncrease of populaton s taken from Japanese ollleal sources and back as far as G0 of our era. At that perod the populaton was 4,9SS,S42. From 723 to 85 t luctu-ate- d between 20,000,000 and 25,000,000, sometmes advancng and sometmes retrogradng a few hundred thousand. n 872 a regular census bureau was.establshed, and from that tme there las been a steady ncrease, commencng wth 33.0.S25 at that date. n 8S0 there were G0; n S9, 40,7S,077, and ts present populaton, based on careful calculaton, for the fgures of the census of 804 and 05 are not yet to hand, s estmated at 45,000,000; ths ncludes 3,000,000 for the sland of Fomosa. Comparng these lgures wth those of some of the foremost countres of the world, some nterestng facts come forth. The populaton of Japan, s O.GOO.OOO greater than France; 4,40,000 less than Germany, and 7,000,000 greater than. England proper,. e., not ncludng Scotland and reland. n pont of populaton Japan stands ffth on the worlds lst. Classed as to her revenues and ler mltary and naval resources, Japan stands tenth. At ths rate of progress, t wll not he long before Japan rses n the latter lst. The drectons n whch Japanese, emgraton has set and ts great ncrease durng the last four years, s also remarkable, of course. Accordng to otlclal fgures kept n Japan, from SS5 to SS9, 5,07 Japanese left the Empre to seek work elsewhere; but durng the next four years 38,tf2 emgrated. Snce then the ncrease has been very rapd. Of ths emgraton the chef part came to the Hawaan slands. The total number of emgrants to Hawa up to 80G was estmated at (0,000; but, as we know here, a large jumber have returned, and we have now somewhat over 20,-00-0 on the slands. The rapd ncrease of emgraton n other drectons s very notceable. Takng the same sets of four years, ns mentoned above, the emgraton to Corea sprang from )0 to l!)30; to the Unted States from 787 to 3780; to Sbera from 42 to 285S; to Australa from C8 to 2037, and to Canada from nothng to 7G. All ths shews an actvty and push whch far exceeds any other naton n the Pacfc. n the three years snce the fgures were made up the ncrease of emgraton has been Htll larger. n Sbera the Japanese are used as laborers on the ralroad, over of them beng engaged n that work. The eghth secton of the ralroad was bult entrely by Japanese, and they gave thorough satsfacton. They are not allowed to settle n Sbera, however, and as ther tme s out, each detachment s sent back-t- o Japan. A naton as actye as ths, wth representatves n every part of ths ocean and ts coasts, s undoubtedly gong to leave a large mark upon ts hstorcal records and to have a large nfluence upon ts destnes. VOTNG. The rght of votng s one whch every man who has t should exercse. f t s not exercsed the ndvdual has only hmself to blume f legslaton-does not go n the drecton that he wshes. f a man wll not take the trouble to qualfy as a oter, he can-j- ot complan f men are elected whom he does not desre to see elected. Many n man says: "Oh, what does one rote more or less, matter." t does mntter a great deal. A sngle vote may swng an electon nnd carry n the very man as representatve who wll advocate the measures whch are desrable, and whch, from the voters pont of vew, are essental. A sngle brek s not of much value; but t s the sngle brek, together wth a large number of other brcks, that make thu palace. What s the stroke of a pen? And yet u few strokes put together may gve forth words that str every heart that reads them, and enrry brllant thought down to the farthest lmts of tme. n the matter of cpallfylng for votng there s always more or less lazness. t s a bother to go up and qualfy. "Today s a busy day. wll put. t ol tll tomorrow." When tomorrow comes lt h equally busy. The evenng s a good tme to qualfy, but when evenng cones there s a party, or a lodge meetng, or an nterestng game, and so the tlmo, agan slps by, and wll contnue to slp by untl s too late and the opportunty s gone. Those who make use of ther opportuntes wll be those who wll make ther mpress upon the next Legslature. There are many questons of deep nterest to every one to come up. One of the most nterestng nnd most jvtal s the subject of taxaton. Many a man says the tax burdens are not properly dvded. " pay more than my proportonate share." Qualfy to j vote, then, nnd work to got n a Kcp-- ; resentatve vho wll put forward your vews and work to get the law changed. Another man objects to the pre-- ponderanee of a certan party n the State. He can never get the change he desres unless he votes. Votng power s mmense and should be used to good cttcct. A SUGGESTON. The recent flutter over Schedule E n the tax returns s an llustraton of the carelessness wth whch legslaton s looked upon by the average outsder, and n ths case by men above the average and who have ther mnds sharpened by keen competton n busness. Schedule E was duly dscussed when the bll was passed n the last Legslature, and apparently no one took nterest enough n the matter to see. what ts bearngs really were. Now t cones before the merchants somewhat n the nature of a thunderbolt. A suggeston made by a promnent busness man n regard to such met-- j ters s well worth consderaton hy other busness men of the communty. A merchant s often too much engag-- cd wth hs own affars to watch carefully the course of legslaton. le cannot follow up amendment after amendment, and the snuous path of a bll, ns t passes from one bouse to another, gettng a change here and a change there tll n the end ts own father would not know tt, ns was the case wth several bll n the last Legslature dealng wth reforms n the method of levyng revenue. Some sectons were certanly passed by way of experment to see how they would work. The suggeston alluded to above- - s that the merchants of the cty should engage a lawyer to watch over ther especal nterests nnd report upon the bearng of a bll. n ths way any pont whch they regard as nmcal to ther nterests would readly be. detected and could be met and fought at once. There would then be no bolt from the blue, as t were, as has hnp-pene- d n ths ease. ttho suggest on s a good one nnd should be acted upon. Capt. Whte sends The Star a sample of what the Japanese beetle s stll dong n hs garden. The war aganst the beetle has not been successful n the Captans garden, evdently. He does not say, however, whether he has used the noculated beetles whoh were to be obtaned at the Kureau of Agrculture. t s certan that quanttes of beetles have been destroyed by ths means, and f t s only kept (up they wll all be fnally destroyed. Mr. Marsden found that people would not take suffcent pans to brng beetles for noculaton. f Capt. Whte has used the noqulated beetles, then n hs case there has evdently been a falure. Attenton must be called to the fact that The Star never attends to anonymous communcatons, even when they chme n wth the polcy of the paper.
