OLD SHP WRECKED AND ONLY THREE MEN SAVED LONDON, Oct. 9. The shp Benamn Sewall has been wrecked on the Pescadores. Only three o the crew were saved. The shp Benamn F. Sewall was a well known old shp that had seen her best years some tme ago. She was not one o the lne o Sewall shps that have been tradng to Hawa but sals out o Boston and the nterest n the vessel whch s not owned by her master, Captan Halsted, s owned by a Boston rm. Captan Halsted has had the Sewall n all sorts o dcultes. The vessel has been ashore many tmes, has been n a great deal o trouble at sea, and was regarded as hoodoed vessel, as she seldom arrved n a port and got away agan wthout beng mxed up n the courts. The vessel was o 320 tons. The Pescadores are a group o small slands, surrounded by many rees, and stuated n the Formosa Strat, lyng almost mdway, between Formosa and Amoy, Chna. The place s n the typhoon track and the Pescadores have clamed many wrecks durng recent years. These small slets ormerly belonged to Chna but are now the property o Japan. The Benamn F. Followng the plan adopted by the New York and other yacht clubs, t s possble that a system o sgnals, usng the nternatonal Code lags, wll be adopted or use between the Hawa Tacht Club and the steamers Dvng between the slands wth such nter sland salng vessels as carry a set o sgnal lags aboard. By ths means steamers and yachts could report each other and carry news o casualty or other happenngs to the nearest port. Damond Head Charle would be a en promnent also n such correspondence. T. "W. Hobron s the man who has proposed the matter and s endeavorng to tarry t through. Whle such a code wll be o great use to the yachtsmen n ther cruses and races t should also be ound valuable to the steamers and there seems good prospect o the system beng adopted. Mr. Kennedy o the nterslan d Steam Navgaton Company has been approached and s avorable to the dea and Mr. Wght o the WUders Steamshp Co. wll, now he has returned, be ntervewed on the subect as soon as possble. The code o sgnals as proposed has been drawn up by Mr. Hobron and conssts o twentys x messages made plan by the dsplay o a sngle lag and some 200 arranged by two lag combnatons. Many o these Dertan prncpally to yachtng but as many more are avalable and valuable to both commercal and pleasure vessels. For example A stands or "Accdent," C and D or "Yes", and "No." Q calls or a surgeon, S or a plot, T a launch, U a man overboard, whle Z to the educated captan would tell hm that he was runnng nto danger. The mmedate presence o a doctor rom shore n case o an accdent to a salor or passenger could be procured by two lags readng B and Z hosted to the mast. The condton o the weather, on the bar, n the channel or outsde may all be smlarly asked and answered. Need o assstance or o a tow, the Queston and answer o mal ashore or the request "Brng my mal," or "Send a shore boat," are all easly told. Damond Head Charle, wth the code at hs elbow, a set o sgnal lags, a lag sta and halyards can ask "Where are you bound," "Where are you rom," When dd you leave such and such a nldno " roorl th answprs. "Wsh a pleasant voyage," say "Thankyou, " or receve t n short order as long as daylght holds. A hack can be ordered and be n watng, a resdence telephoned ust as easly. Wth code books and lags at sland ports the system should prove very valuable where landngs are d cult and sometmes prohbtve. Combnatons relatng: to cargo can be readly made up. Two letter com, bnatons tell the days o the week, the hours and hal hours, "bells," through out tne day, wnue tne varous ponts, bays anchorages and ports are all marked n case o adopton yachts would be gven numbers to save spellng out a name at length and such steamers and vessels as oned the combne would be smlarly equpped. Compass sg nals are provded or by three letter combnatons. There were two, or Juror Montano, notwthstand ng hs dark complexon, s one o a race whch has not been classed as other than whte. The corrected statement s that the ury stood ten Hawaans to two whte men, a pro porton whch cannot be. regarded as T. tho nterpsts o UStce t XCbll wa ll would seem as both races should always have proper representaton n the ury box. t may be assumed that a whte man s as competent or ury duty as a Hawaan so long as he be haves hmsel. Regardng urors who urge that the bare and uncolored relaton o a act whch o tsel gave them no concern, so changed ther mental atttude that they could not gve the deendant a ar tral, all we can say s that they are ether nsncere or chldsh. nsncere ther obstreperous complants and ther reusal to do ther duty Bhould mpel the court to punsh them or contempt; merely chldsh they have no busness on the ury at all. Fcbvrc, the French Actor. Tells o Hs Vst to Lord Salsbury. One evenng n January, 889, Lord Lvtton, the amable and regretted Englsh Ambassador to France, came nto my loge and asked me to let Lady Salsbury and Lady Lvtton see the ancestral gallery o the Comede. So, o course. became the ccerone o the three noble vstors. Ater havng examned all the old works o art, Lady Salsbury sad to me, wth the most perect courtesy: " you return once more to England, as hope you wll, wll be happy to present you to Lord Salsbury, who wll be glad to take you through the hstorc gallery o Hatheld." The ollowng sprng was wth my we n England. Rememberng the latterng nvtaton o Lady! Salsbury, we went to the castle o Hateld. Ye were nvted to spend the day there, to meet the llustrous statesman whose recent death put the entre kngdom n mournng. Hateld s only a short dstance rom the metropols. t was there that Queen Elzabeth receved, not wthout sheddng manv tears, the news o the death o arv Stuart. Ater Ladv Salsburv had ntroduced us to Lord Salsbury, we passed nto the dnng room, where there were already assembled qute a number o guests. Ater breakast we had coee, served on lttle tables n the garden whch shades the ront o that deal dwellng. Then hs Lordshp arose and oered to conduct us to the gallery, whch makes Hateld a vertable museum. When we had passed through that porton o the buldng ormerly occuped by Queen Elzabeth, we were astonshed to learn that snce her death n 603 nothng has been changed n the order o the roval apartments. The old locks were n the doors, and the urnture, the tapestry, and even the prede u o the Queen remaned ntact. Evervthn g was n ts place, so that, by any undesred mracle. Queen Elzabeth should return to ths world, she would nd Hateld ust as was n the days o her wcked le. Suddenly hs Lordshp stopped n ront o a red chalk sketch. "There, sad he to us. "s somethng whch you have not n France. t s the portrat o Ravallac. bv Porbts, the panter and the rend o your Kng Henr V. What do you thnk o t? " thnk," sad. "that the red chalk was well selected to pcture the eatures o that monster. We have, beleve, no portrat o hm n France." A lttle urther on we came n ront o a portrat o a ladv. "Do you recognze t?" asked Lord Salsbury. looked at t closely and was oblged to admt my gnorance. "What!" he exclamed. "You, a Frenchman, do not recognze Mary Stuart?" "Well," sad. "probably the reason s that or all Frenchmen the unortunate and martyred Queen was the personcaton o grace, dgnty and beauty, whle the portrat now beore my eyes s that o a homely and vulgar lookng woman." "True enough," sad Lord Salsbury, wth some malce n hs smle, "but we must not orget that t was Elzabeth who had that portrat panted." At the end o the gallery, whch s lled wth rare peces o urnture, all knds o drapery, works n vory. &c. our eyes became xed upon an mmense canvas representng Elzabeth n a brocade robe, all embrodered wth eyes and ears. We passed through long and beautul avenues bordered by three rows o venerable trees. "But why, M. The result o all ths s that the Porto Rcan laborers are wthout work and starvng. Local papers teem wth reports o persons dyng rom starvaton. Only the other day sx persons ded n ront o the gates o Ponce. Everywhere there s abect poverty. Tax recepts relect the condtons o Porto Rco very well More than oneha l o the taxes are unpad, and not a ew o the owners o valuable estates are n arrears more than two years. Ther borrowng ablty s thus more lmted, and the auctoneers voce wll soon be heard, or governments need monev. t s pos sble that n ths Porto Rcos uture prosperty les, or propertes that sx or seven years ago represented value o b8o and S90 an acre wll go under the hammer or $0 or $2, and rom ther very cheapness wll attract Amercan captal. That lvng condtons have become unbearable n Porto Rco can be seen rom the constant How o emgraton o natves to other Spanshspeakn g countres. Xot a steamer leaves Porto Rco or Mexco, Cuba or South Amerca that does not carry laborers who have scraped enough money to go to other shores. Span was a large consumer o Porto Rcan coee, and the prce was sucently hgh to net large prots on money nvested n the lands. "When the Amercans took over the sland Span ceased to be a buyer and Porto Rco looked to ts new alatons to take the place o Span and buy ts coee. But Porto Rcan coee at rom 0 to 4 cents a pound meets strong competton n the ource coee o nt Brazl, whch s ts neror many tmes over. Porto Rcan coee today commands but a very small market n Europe, wth ts prc? down to eght or nne cents. Even at that prce, say the planters, t mght pay them to cultvate coee, but t takes money to cultvate. All the Canddates Had Somethng to Say Worth and Applaudng. ras PACFC UMMEKCAL ADVERTSER, HONOLULU, OCTOBER 0, J03. Hearng A large and enthusastc Republcan meetng was held last nght on the grounds o Hon. S. M. Damons country estate at Moanalua. Mr. Dan presded and ater makng some ntroductory remarks he presented the "Boy Orator" as the rst speaker. Harry E. Murray spoke next sayng that he stood or good government and honest poltcs. He told o the prncples o the Republcan party and sad as a party the Republcans always carred out ther promses and never made promses that they could not carry out. S. E. Damon ollowed and sad that he dd not propose to take up much o the tme o the audence as he was well enough known n Moanalua and wanted to gve the other canddates a chance to be heard. He brely told o the dutes o the Treasurer and made a strong plea or the entre Republcan tcket. Geo. F. Renton, who was ntroduced at the "Roosevelt o Hawa," spoke at some length and was gven a rousng recepton. He spoke along the general lnes o Republcansm and asked the voters to support not only hmsel but the entre Republcan tcket. He sad that the Home Rule tcket conssted o a ew Home Rulers, dsgruntone Democrat and a number o ed Republcan loppers. He sad he would lke to compare the two tckets but as the Home Rulers themselves dd not know who would be ther nal nomnees such comparson was mpossble. Mr. Brown, sad the speaker, compared the Republcan tcket to a newly launched shp but dd not carry the comparson ar enough as he orgot to say that the shp had Republcan ocers t would not requre $250,000 worth o Pauoa water to loat t. "Bll Nye" Lucas next spoke and the usual laugh ollowed hs many wtty reerences to the Home Rule party. Henry C. Vda was then called upon. He sad that he was not a canddate or any oce but that he was out to support the entre Republcan tcket. He sad that as the county would not have a great deal o unds to run the government, t would be necessary to elect men who could go to the banks and merchants and "rase the wnd" when unds ran short. He sad that the county government was n the shape o a shell and would requre men o honesty, ntegrty and ntellgence to put t on a sold oundaton. To elect the Home Rulers would be lke buldng a house on sand. As soon as any weght was placed n t the sand would sht and the oundaton would be gone. POLTCS N THE JURY BOX The Star has the ollowng comment on yesterdays extraordnary proceed ngs: The row rased by the Kamuela ury n Judge Gears court s regarded by very many people as a stroke o Home Rule poltcs. The ury, on whch there are some o the leaders o the party, took occason to brng up a race ssue and create a lot o eelng whch may be used to an race preudce among Hawaans and make them lock to the standard o Wlcox. A small tem n the mornng paper was taken up and used as a text or a lengthy trade and some o the statements made sounded almost lke Home Rule speeches. John Wse almost wanted blud, and Charley Notley, who s not a member o the ury concerned, addressed the court wth a statement, subsequently contradcted by Deputy Atorney General Peters, whch was desgned to accuse the haoles o opposng natves. James H. Boyd, another leadng Home Rule poltcan, was n court and was heard to reer to the matter as a poltcal ssue. "Jmme" secured a large pad o wrtng paper and proceeded to make notes, or wrte a speech n court. t took hm a long tme to nsh t. t wll be good campagn materal. The ury o ths term n Gears court contans a remarkable percentage o Home Rule poltcans, and rom the openng o the term there have been ndcatons and rumor? o antagonsm among them to the Attorney Generals department. The row n court today wll be used on every platorm, to substantate a clam that whtes do not trust Hawaans on ures, whch s the ssue the poltcal urors were tryng to make n court ths mornng. t s a act, however, that there ha.s been scarcely a ury accepted snce annexaton, on whch the races were not about evenly dvded. "The whole proposton." sad a canddate on the Republcan tcket, "s a scheme to get Hawaan votes. The remarks o the urors were altogether outsde o the case on tral and even the court brought up a publcaton o two weeks ago. The urors had taken oaths to decde the cae o the Terr! tory aganst Kamuela, solely on the acts and the evdence. What have they to do wth somethng that s sad, outsde o court, about how the attorneys try the case? James Hoare, a credtor o the late Antone Rosas estate, has by hs attorneys, Knney & Ballou, led exceptons to the report o Ela A. C. Long, the commssoner to admeasure dower. n the rst place, he says the commssoner has wrongly admeasured dower to the wdow, Helen N. Rosa, n that she had elected to take under the wll o her husband, as hs sole devsee, and thereore was not enttled to dower. n the next place, the commssoner had wrongly admeasured dower n that he had ncluded n the admeasurement the ull value o lands that were mortgaged at the tme o Antone Rosas death. n a mortgage by Antone Rosa and Helen N. Rosa to J. A. Masroon or $5500, Mrs. Rosa had conveyed away her dower nterest n such lands. Lastly, the commssoner had wrongly admeasured dower or the reason that the wdow consented n wrtng, such consent beng led n the Crcut Court, to the sale o lands or the purpose o payng the debts o the estate, and or no other purpose. t s alleged that the sale o lands took place, under an order o the court, ree and clear o all ncumbrances and wthout any reservatons as to dower or other nterests. Also, that a petton to conrm the sale, wth the consent n wrtng o Mrs. Rosa to conrmaton, was led by the executor, and the sale was conrmed by the court. t s contended that, by consentng to the sale wthout reservaton and wthout makng clam or her dower nterest, also by watng nearly three years ater the sale beore makng any clam or dower n any part o the estate, the wdow had waved her dower rght n the proceeds o sad lands.
