McGuire July 2017 Dear Members and Friends of Rock Lake, This year we are celebrating the 500 th anniversary of the founding of the Protestant Reformation. The Protestant Reformation started, as the legend goes, by Martin Luther on Oct. 31, 1517, when he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of All Saints Cathedral Church in Wittenberg, Germany. It was a list of 95 abuses Luther believed were practiced by the Roman Church at that time. The list begins with the words I protest hence Luther and his followers were eventually known as the Protestant Movement. On October 31, 2017, we celebrate the 500 th anniversary of the founding the Protestant Reformation. Luther was born to Hans and Margaret Luder on November 10, 1483, in Eisleben, Saxony, Germany. His parents were not poor, having sufficient income to provide food and the basic necessities of life. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Mansfield, Germany where Hans managed smelting furnaces used to extract metal from its ore. In school Martin did quite well, preparing for university studies to become a lawyer. He earned a bachelor s degree at the University of Erfurt and then a masters in In that era many who knew Latin would Latinize their names, so Martin Luder changed his name to Luther. After a harrowing close encounter with a lightning bolt in a storm, Luther abandoned the law and became a monk. His father, a practical man, was not happy with his son s vocation change. However, Luther stayed the course and was ordained a priest in As the protestant movement progressed over time, Luther was not only a teacher, writer, pastor, and reformer, but also a devoted husband and father. On June 13, 1525, Martin married Katherine von Bora, a former nun. Luther had written against celibacy earlier in his career and he put it into practice when he married. The Luther s had children that included Hans, Martin, Paul, and Magdalena. Martin Luther died at the age of sixty-two in the place of his birth in Eisleben, February As the Protestantism developed it did so along two main theological lines of thought. Those following Martin Luther and his associates became known as Lutherans. The first Lutheran state church was established in Sweden with its first archbishop appointed in The other line of Protestant theology came forth in the Reformed churches. The most well-known reformer of this line is John Calvin. The Reformed churches had their greatest influence in Switzerland, The Netherlands, some in Germany, in France, in Scotland primarily through the work of the Presbyterian minister, John Knox, and in England. Other countries in Europe were influenced to some degree by the Reformation. It is this second line, Reformed theology, which is most important to Rock Lake Presbyterian Church. The two lines of theological thought, Protestant (Luther) and Reformed (Calvin) while different in details, together they would be known as the Protestant Reformation. In this space in August s newsletter there will be a biography of the key proponent of Reformed doctrine, John Calvin. Hope everyone is having a good summer. 2 JUNE 2017 SESSION DIGEST 1. WORSHIP: 41 people were served in communion on June CONGREGATIONAL CARE: The July potluck luncheon will be on Sunday, July ADMINISTRATION & FINANCE: Through May, $6,478 has been donated to 'extra mile'. This has helped to achieve a $512 positive balance through May YTD. The committee thanks members and friends for continued financial support. 4. PROPERTY: Asbestos removal from the apartment will be accomplished next week. As of June 15, the Raise the Steeple Fund (roof fund) has received $10, MISSION: In a special meeting on June 27, session adopted a new mission statement, Shining Christ's Light. Initially, we want to include this statement in the church's 'lighthouse' letterhead. 6. ROCK LAKE COMMUNITY LIFE CENTER (CLC): a. Manna Meal hosted a volunteer recognition dinner on Thursday, June 15. Jean Simpson retired as executive director. There was a front page Gazett story on that event. b. On Saturday, June 17, NECCO of Charleston hosted a foster family recognition dinner. NECCO serves foster families in Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. You can get more information at necco.org. c. Preparations continue with non-profit agency Pollen8, to host Camp Appalachia, an after school program for at risk children, beginning when the new school year commences in mid-august. 3 2017 JULY POT LUCK LUNCH FOLLOWING WORSHIP SUNDAY, JULY 9TH Established 2013 Two one-week sessions: July and July We're getting ready for an exciting two weeks and invite you all to be a part of the excitement. Please add us in your prayers for a successful camping experience for our youth. Thanks to all who have donated to the Arts Camp this year! We now have sponsors for 110 campers! Currently we have $7,146 toward our $9,650 budget for the camp. Only 40 more campers need sponsors! Make your check to RLPC and put Arts Camp on memo line. $65 sponsors one child to camp. Any amount is appreciated. Envelopes are in the pews for your convenience. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Donations of punch/drinks and cookies (homemade or store bought) are needed for the Art Show after the program that is held on each Friday at the end of the camp weeks. Contact the church office if you can provide either. Bring your favorite summertime covered dish, salad or dessert! But most important: Bring yourself! Summer Reminder from the Administration & Finance committee At the start of this traditional vacation season, we hope you enjoy the summer! Please remember that church expenses do not take a vacation. Please keep your giving up-to-date. And please join us in worship whenever you are home! Peace and Grace to you all! Thank you for the use of the Community Life Center and Fellowship Hall for our team practices as we prepared for the Regional, State, and World Competitions. Charleston Area Robotics Team (CART) VEX Team #9498A (The original Thank You card is on the bulletin board in the narthex. They placed 16th out of 94 teams!) COME ON BY FOR A COOKOUT!! (at the CLC every Thursday through August 3rd!) Each Thursday evening the YouthWorks staff have a cookout for the program participants, members and friends of RLPC and residents of the surrounding community. No reservations needed, just come to our Community Life Center around 6 p. m. Food and drinks are furnished.
