3 Friends, I was brought up in a Christian home; my mom was raised in the Catholic tradition (and later became Protestant) and my dad became a Christian when I was four years old. One of our regular practices as a family was reading the Bible together. Each night after dinner we would break out our Bibles. We d start with Genesis and read at least one chapter every night. Most of the time, we were able to read through the Bible within a year. We did this from the time I could read to the time I left for college. Of course, I did my share of complaining, but now that I m an adult, I see what a difference that practice made in my faith. The Bible tells the story of God, which is also the story of us. It tells of God s work in the world, God s great love for us, and our response to God. It s a story of an allpowerful, loving God doing amazing things through ordinary human beings. It s a love story of a Creator who never gives up on His creation. The Bible serves as the basis for our faith and beliefs as Christians. Unfortunately, most Christians don t know the Bible very well. According to research, while 9 out of 10 households own a Bible, about 53% of Christians say they never read the Bible. Only 20% say that they have read the entire Bible. These days, even I struggle to read the Bible on a regular basis (not counting sermon preparation). It s time for us to get back to the basics. My goal for this year is for us as a congregation to become more Biblically literate. We re going to accomplish this in several ways. First, our fall sermon series is focusing on the most well-known stories in the Old Testament. In January and February, we ll focus on the New Testament. Second, in School, our youth and children will be using a curriculum designed to go through the entire Bible in a year. Third, we will make sure that anyone who is in third grade or older, who does not own a personal Bible, will be provided one. If that applies to you or your child, please let me know. If you would prefer a digital option, I highly recommend The Bible App, which you can find in your Android/Apple app store. This year, may our Jason Lee church family be more intentional about spending time in God s Word. Joy and peace, Pastor Patti

We have a really fun time working alongside others from the community while we blanch, cut from the cobs, put in baggies and freeze about 5000 ears of corn that will be used for the Tuesday dinners. We should be done by noon. Please come help if you can. Randy Shiosaki SUMMER SACK LUNCH PROGRAM The summer Sack Lunch Program provided free lunches for children age 1 to 18 each weekday from August 6 to August 17. This year the program was a joint project between Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist Church and The Community Dinner Table, Inc. This important ministry helps to fill the hunger gap for many children between the end of the school summer lunch program and the beginning of school. We fed almost 600 children this year. Thank you to all the many people who donated time, energy, food, etc. We could not fill this need without your help. Thank you. Linda Perry and Barb Parris Co-organizers

5 FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT Minutes for Finance Meeting The committee met on Sept 5, 2018 at 6:15 pm. In attendance were: Pastor Patti, Shirley Brumfield, Debbie Reid-Oleson, Alan Hennebold, Diane Colson, and Dorothy Hunter. We are at 66.67% of the calendar year. This past month expenses were higher than the income so it was voted for apportionments to be $ plus what had been designated from members. The amount will be $ The next meeting will be October 3, 2018 at 6:15 pm. As chairman of the finance committee I would like to thank you for your generous giving. We enjoyed a wonderful pot-luck meal and enjoyed a very nice time of fellowship. Our monthly meeting will be Sept. 13 at noon in the Fellowship Hall. METHODIST YOUTH FELLOWSHIP MYF would like to thank the church for their prayers and support of this ministry! MYF will take a summer break before resuming in the fall. Thanks, Becca IT S TIME TO SING! If you like to sing and have fun with a dedicated group of people, then CHOIR is just the thing for you! You don t read music? Not a problem! You can t attend all practices? Not a problem! Additional reasons to join? You have reserved seating in church! You don t have to decide what to wear under your choir robe! You can be a part of the music ministry of the church! Everyone 7 th grade to adult is invited. We will not practice on September 6 during Fair Week, but every Thursday after that at 7:00 p.m. (Choir room downstairs). We will begin singing in church on, September 9. DONATE YOUR RIDLEY S POINTS TO THE CHURCH We have registered JLMUMC with the Ridley s Advantage Program so that you are able to donate your advantage points to the church. A paper explaining all the details is in the Narthex next to the bulletins. We have already received a check from Ridley s from this program. What an easy and simple way to support the church!

7 Bible Reading Plan During our The Old Testament s Greatest Hits sermon series, we ll be looking at some of the most well-known stories in the Old Testament. In order to become familiar with the entire story, you are encouraged to read the following passages each week, in preparation for s sermon. Most importantly, it will allow you to know the Bible, and God, better. If you do not own a Bible, Pastor Patti has some extra Bibles. Let her know, and she will happily give you one.
