Honolulu. 4862l m When the pupls at the summer school gathered n the Hgh School buldng yesterday mornng nspecr Townsend called them n the recepn room made announcements for the days sesson. Some Armstrong Smths pupls work n carvng was exhbted called forth much prase from the teachers others at the school. Mr. Smth has classes n knfe work twce each week, the exhbt yesterday was the work pupls n the frst second year classes. Hereafter the teachers wll meet for chapel at 855 a. m. Announcements wll there be made the day begun wth the Lords prayer. No one s requred be present but those who are there wll know what changes have been, or are be made. At the servce yesterday mornng Mr. Townsend requested those attendng one or more classes enroll themselves n a blank book left n the fce. The pupls do not seem take very kndly ths request as up eght oclock only a few had enrolled. n pedagogy Monday afternoon Mr. Townsend spoke the method teachng lterature prmary classes. The teacher tells the sry n an nterestng manner makng t as near the chlds experence as possble. The chld then tells t n hs own words. Ths s a most valuable means learnng the language. He then ld the method n the "Thompson" school Oakl. The teacher there tells the sry "The Three Bears" the chldren tll they learn t by heart. Then she wrtes t on blackboar d. the At the end the second or thrd week school they are able read t themselves. The sry s then gven them on slps prnted wth scrpt ordnary type. Ths method seems work well wth Englshspeakn g chldren. The testmony seems be that sres are not undersod at frst by Hawaan chldren, have be repeated. Many teachers have had good success by havng the chldren tell the sry wrtng t out n ther words. n methodology the subject for the days lesson was "Are the fve steps (preparan, presentan, assmlan or comparson, generalzan, applcan) generally applcable?" Mr. Townsend sad My lttle boy on hs vst Honolulu some tme snce called the street cars "engnes." Why? Because he had seen the lttle engne at Lahana ths had some elements smlarty, the track, etc. Now, after lvng at Olaa where the stage passes twce a day, he calls the street cars stages. Why? He nterprets by what s n hs mnd. Do we fnd that that s generally true? Then the need preparan before presentan. n answer quesn the prevous lesson may should be a preparan. t may not be suffcent. Agan, s a presentan an ndvdual example necessary? Here comes n the dfference between teachng tellng. You may tell a pupl that floatng a body wll dsplace ts weght n water he wll know nothng about t. But take a block, wegh t, place t n a full bowl wegh the overflowng water then the pupl wll have a dawnng dea the matter. Prncpal Scott the Hgh School n contnung the course n Hsry Educan gave a very nterestng account the ancent Greeks.
