Wozniak This is my last message as Exalted Ruler and my last newsletter as editor. In the immortal words of Robert Hunter, "What a long, strange trip it's been"! As I look back on the last year, I'm sure I am feeling many of the same things that other ERs have felt as the end of their term approached. Regret that I was unable to accomplish everything I had hoped to accomplish, satisfaction in what (albeit few) accomplishments were made, pleasure in the cooperative participation of many of the members and officers, and yes, relief that that the year is over and the lodge didn't close on my watch and that I can pass the baton. After serving on the House Committee for more than 10 years and upstairs for 4 years, I will be taking a sabbatical from Elkdom duties, to the relief of some, myself included. I'll still be around and will cook and help out otherwise when I can, but will be focusing my spare time on my other duties as Treasurer of the American Translators Association for the next few years. The lodge has a strong slate of officers for the coming year and I hope some of the "young blood" there will be able to recruit new, younger members, which is absolutely vital to the long-term survival of our lodge. And there will be changes to be sure. For many, the initial reaction to change is negative, esp. if the change is to something to which they are long accustomed. But this lodge will not survive for long if it does not change. The "retiree/winter Texan membership model" is simply not sustainable as it does not provide the lodge with members who can do all the work that must be Secretary's Message Peggy Rodgers This month I am happy to introduce our two newest members. If you see Marge Smith or Bob Trinidad in the social quarters, please give them our usual "Friendliest Lodge in Texas" welcome. Keep in mind that if you have any friends who are interested in joining our lodge family, it takes between 35 and 45 days to go through all the steps. There are five parts to the process as follows: 1) Proposed for membership at first or third meeting; 2) Investigation on the last Saturday of the month; 3) Balloted on at the first meeting of each month; 4) Orientation i.e., learning about Elkdom on the Monday before the third Thursday meeting; 5) Initiation on the third Thursday of every month. If you are a Winter Texan, please keep this in mind so it can coincide with your travels. If you are totally confused give us a call at the office at and we will try to explain it. The first part of March, the second dues notices will be mailed out so everyone has a chance to get their new card before Elkettes Message Shirley Morgan, President We had a nice turnout for our Elkette breakfast. We have seen ample evidence of this over the last few years as our meal revenues have steadily declined as costs went up. And overall, the Social Quarters, which is supposed to be the primary source of funding for the lodge, has become a net drain on our finances. In my studied opinion, only new and younger members can reverse that trend. So please support the new Exalted Ruler and his officers as they seek to make the changes that will ensure our continued existence as a "going concern". Even if you don't like some of the changes yourself, you elected these people to do the work for you. As my last hurrah, I am asking for your support for the Texas Chili Cook-off fundraiser on March 8. As the organizers of the Texas Independence Day celebration expect a few thousand people to attend, if we can sell each of them just one taster cup of chili from each of the chili entries, the Lodge could raise several thousand dollars. But only if we have enough cookers entered. That money would help greatly with the cash cushion we must have to survive the coming summer. In closing, I would like to thank everyone who has assisted me over the last year. Gypsy Melton for keeping me on track during meetings and for her deep concern about the lodge's finances, Peggy Rodgers for her patient collaboration with the newsletter and other issues, Earl Groh and Norma Williams for their advice and counsel as PERs, Pat Randolph for being a sounding post and friend when I needed to vent, and to Annie for her mighty efforts to make the beverage service more successful. And to all of the members of San Benito Lodge #1661 who cook and clean, serve on committees, hold office, and otherwise volunteer their time to the lodge. Thank you! And remember, "The road goes on forever and the party never ends!" your old one (2013/2014) quits working on April 1. I guess Ted, our E.R., has harped enough about the newsletter that the office staff (Gypsy and I) are going to take a shot at it. With Diane Helser's help we will attempt to put out April's bulletin. Please be kind to us for a month or so, we are human and make mistakes and I am sure we will do a bang up job (on the errors, I mean). Also, to our friends who will be leaving in the next month or so, PLEASE be sure to turn in your change of address to us because I am sure you will want your newsletter so you can see how many mistakes you can find. Seriously, your address change is important to Grand Lodge so you don't miss any of your Elks magazines.
