GREETINGS FELLOW MEMBERS: First of all, I would like to give a Big Thank You To Dave & Marcia Dibble, Ron & Nicole Adams, our Great Kitchen Staff, our Great Bar Staff and all the Other help, for putting on the magnificent New Year s Eve Party we had. You all assured that the year 2008 went out with a bang, and 2009 entered in style, rocking the Lodge with Firehawk. I know that everyone in attendance had a wonderful time. Our Utah Elks Association President, Peter Bravo and our First Lady, Regina Bravo, spent New Years Eve with us for their yearly visitation. They sent their thanks to the members that worked so hard to put this night together, and to all the members of Provo Lodge for making their night so enjoyable. They had a great time bringing in the New Year with us. At our January 6th Lodge meeting, Gary Nelson was elected as our new Esteemed Loyal Knight. Congratulations and THANK YOU Gary. We also need a new Lodge Esquire to finish out the year, and we all need to start thinking about the new Elk year starting in April. It is extremely important that we keep all our Officer and Committee positions fully staffed. Without our members stepping up to fill all of our Lodge positions it will be a struggle to keep out Lodge open and to continue to do all of the great work we do in our Community, State and Country. I am going to start asking for help to fill out Lodge positions, so please give it some serious thought. If there is something that you would like to do for the up and coming year, please do not hesitate to talk to me. THANK YOU! Please come out to the Lodge on March the 20th and support out P.E.R. Association. They will be raising money for their association charities by hosting the St. Patty s Party with a and a Hypnotist Show. I am sure that it will be another superb evening, I think that everyone that attended the last Hypnotist Show will probably remember TWINKLE TOES. Maybe this show will produce another up and coming star. Bring your friends and neighbors for an evening of fun and laughter. On January 10th the Central District Hoop Shoot was held at the Provo Farrer Elementary School. I had a really good time watching the kids shoot their free throws, and a good time was had by all. Don and Eunice are still here; but their visit with us is almost over. I hope that everyone has taken the time to sit and converse with them. Don and Eunice, I hope you have enjoyed your stay and that you realize how much you will be missed when you go home. In closing, I would like to quote from out Esteemed Lecturing Knights charge. The animal from which our Order derives its name is noted for gentleness and timidity. It is strong of limb, fleet of foot, quick and keen of perception. So should we be: quick to hear the cry of distress, timorous of doing wrong and fleet of foot to relieve the unfortunate, thus conforming to the Golden Rule which should govern all mankind. Fraternally Mike Nelson, Leading Knight Presiding E.R. 1

6 January 2009 Ladies of Elks February, 2009 D e a r Ladies a n d Members: February is the month for our nicest event of the year the Mother-Daughter Tea. This year s event will be held at the Lodge on Saturday, February 21st starting at 11:00 am. Lunch will be served at Noon and there will be a magician to provide entertainment. This is our chance to bring our daughters and granddaughters to an event planned especially for them. Mary Belvedere and LaRita Juber have been planning this activity for months and I know it will be a nice event to share with your loved ones. The Ladies are encouraged to bring a salad to for the luncheon and any items that they would like to donate to the Gift Basket Drawing (especially items for the younger girls that attend). Our State L.O.E. President, Jodi Smith, and her secretary, Cindy Newman, will be attending this luncheon as their annual visitation to our organization. Plan on saying Hi when you see her there. The dear ladies that are widows of our Elk members are invited to attend the Mother-Daughter event as the guests of the L.O.E. and Christmas Charity. Please come and join us. We all look forward to seeing you there. Sickness and Distress: Our sympathies are extended to June Hinckley on the death of her sister. Ada Nelson is recovering from back surgery. She is home and doing well. Tinamarie Teeples husband, Jerry, has also had back surgery. Teri Van Patten had her other knee surgery late in January. We wish them all a speedy recovery. Please let me know about any other sickness or distress so that I can send a card or keep in touch with the ladies that are ailing. The February meeting is our Past President s meeting. Invitations have been sent to all the Past Presidents and we would love to have you come and join us so we can acknowledge your contributions to the L.O.E. During the February meeting we will also be doing the first nominations for officers for the year for the L.O.E. In the past, we have missed opportunities to elect and appoint members as officers because they didn t say anything about wanting to serve. So, please, if you have the time and would like to be an officer next year, contact Mary Belvedere so she is aware of your inclination. There are many activities going on in the Lodge this month. There will be a Sweetheart Dance and the Father-Daughter and Dance. Both of these activities will be worth attending. So, note the dates of these activities and plan on attending. Support of activities in the Lodge by all of the members is so important. 3 President 1st Vice 2nd Vice Secretary Historian Treasurer Chaplain Parliamentarian Auditor Membership Project Chair Visitation Board Member Board Member Board Member Board Member Linda Gaines Mary Belvedere Gracemarie Goette Cathie Ciampanelli Tinamarie Teeples Ada Nelson Teri Van Patten LaRita Juber Eileen Evans Linda Gaines Peggy Gleason-Reay Mary Belvedere Kathy Lewis Shirley Cross Bertha Brenenstall Christine Martinez Many activities and events that have been unsuccessful in the past have been dropped from our calendar simply because there isn t the support needed to make them profitable. It is hard to find volunteers to organize a party or event when they feel like they have worked so hard and then no one came. As the Lodge Scholarship Chairman, (another of the Elks hats that I wear) I am currently in the middle of the judging for the Elks National Foundation scholarship program for this year. What a cool job this is. I get to learn about the most amazing students each year. Last year, a student from Timpview High School took third place on the national level and received a $20, year scholarship. I hope that this year, one of the local students will do as well, or better. March 6th and 7th is the U.E.A. Spring Meeting in St. George. I am looking forward to attending the meeting and seeing the Thurstons and the other members that attend state meetings. L.O.E. Meeting Times L.O.E. Board Meeting First Wednesday at 6:30 pm L.O.E. It is a busy time, but hopefully it will be warm and sunny and a nice getaway as well. I have a dear friend that lives in Washington and another that lives in LaVirkin and I hope to find a few minutes to spend with them while I am there. Remember that BUNCO is going again on the 4th Wednesday each month. Please take care during the rest of winter. It has been icy and cold so far and I dread hearing that someone has been hurt slipping on the ice. Have warm thoughts and maybe Spring will come early. Sincerely, Linda Gaines, L. O. E..
