1 The Upstart May 2006 Charity Justice Brotherly Love Fidelity Exalted Ruler s Message Only the second month and it seems like we ve done so much already at the beginning of the year! On April 1st, we held our Annual Installation of Officers! I d like to thank all those who came and thanked the outgoing officers for their time and dedication to the Lodge. Additionally, wishing the new suite of officers continued success. Take a look later in this publication for pictures of the Installation of Officers! I have many more if your are interested in viewing what took place all night! Also, on the 22nd of April we held our second annual Early Bird Dinner to thank those members who paid their dues prior to April 1st. Although the turn out was less than anticipated, those that did attend enjoyed a great evening of pasta sauce provided by none other than Tom Harkin and his group. Tom did a FAAAANNNTAASTIC job once again! The pasta sauce was top shelf, and we don t deserve anything less! Right Tom! I would like to take this opportunity to inform everyone of a small change in the procedures for proposing someone to membership in our Lodge. The applications will no longer be kept behind the bar. Only the Proposers Questionnaire will be handed out from behind the bar. Once the Secretary has received the completed Questionnaire, it will be given to the Member or sent to the applicant. The choice will be indicated on the Questionnaire. Remember, the proposer has a responsibility almost as great as that of the Membership Committee, and MUST BE well-acquainted with the candidate and familiar with the individual s reputation, background, family and habits. The purpose of the questionnaire is to assist the Membership Committee (Section ). As mentioned in last month s Upstart, the Sixth Annual Motorcycle Run will take place on June 25th and we are still in need of sponsorship of this event. It is imperative that each and every one of us finds at least one new sponsor than last year. I continue my challenge to each of you to either donate yourself or find one sponsor. Later on within this month s Upstart, you will find more information about this event. Tip of the Antlers go out this month to all the members of the Range Committee for their continued support of working on the Lean Too. Additionally, Lee Lemay for constructing four shooting benches. I know there are many more individuals to thank, but I know I ll forget one or two, so to the whole Range Group, Thanks! Your continued support of that area is a testiment of what Elks Care, Elks Share is all about. Tip of the Antlers also go out to Bill Wolfe, PER for another successful year running of running the trap shoot. Finally, to last year s House Committee. Final numbers are in, and it appears that they had not only beaten last year s record; but also beat the number they had orginally given to the Trustees but were told you won t make that! I know I m speaking for last year s House Committee Chairman when I say, the Committee couldn t have done it without the membership s support of the Lodge. So, for all of you out there that frequent the Lodge, thank you and please, please, please, keep up the support and I look forward to seeing you at a meeting real soon! Elk of the Month Lee Littlefield Lee once again spearheaded the annual Easter Plant sale. Working closely with many on the committee, Lee orchestrated another successful year, culminating on Good Friday at The Hartford. I m sure Lee would say he couldn t have done it without any of his committee, while I know that is true, we couldn t have done it without him. Thanks again! Fraternally, Dennis G. Claffey, PER Exalted Ruler
2 Sick and Visiting Graham Tyrol The Secretary s office recently received information that Graham, a Charter Member of the Lodge, had a stroke and is at home. We are attempting to receive more information. If you know of any member, who may not be doing well, please contact the Lodge at and let us know so that we can contact them and keep in touch. Paul Langston Visiting Committee Chair Annual Fishing Derby May 13, 2006 The annual fishing derby will be held on Saturday May 13 th at the pavilion. I wish to thank Bill Wolfe, PER for stepping up again with his crew to organize and take care of the kids. Each year the kids look forward to this event and this year shouldn t be any different! Let us not let them down this year! Please see Bill, or more importantly, come by a meeting to get further details! LODGE OFFICERS Exalted Ruler...Dennis G. This recent article highlights our commitment to the Christmas party the Lodge holds each year. This continued support from our members makes it possible each year to continue with such a tradition. Thank You! The Glastonbury Citizen Thanks go off to Adam Wilder, our newly installed Leading Knight! Adam took the ball on our recent donation of Smoke Alarms and CO Detectors to the Glastonbury Volunteer Fire Department. Secretary s Corner! Hi everyone! Although I'm pleased at the amount of people who paid their dues in advance of April 1st, I'm sorry to report that we have a few stragglers. Elks Lodge Dues are payable in advance of April 1 of each Lodge year. Our Lodge has to pay the Grand Lodge Dues and State Association in advance. This amounts to thousands of our dollars owed not only to the Grand Lodge but the State Association as well. They DO NOT accept IOU's. So, please as a courtesy to me, please get those dues paid by the end of the month. And remember to carry your card at all times when visiting our Lodge or other Lodges. IF YOU DID NOT RECEIVE A DUES NOTICE, please contact me immediately at I want to take a moment to thank the following members, Scott Tackus, Jim Shaw, Paul Langston & John Guminiak, PER, for stepping up and helping me this month with the volume of work that needed to be done. It's Elks like these that make our Lodge run smoothly. Suzanne L. Johnson Secretary

5 Quote of the Month! It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them. -Mark Twain Chaplain s Corner Memorial Day Parade May 29, 2006 It s only a few weeks away! "Encourage one another and build each other up" 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV) Remember as we go through life to remember to encourage each other in our Lodge. Positive words from one to another builds unity and strength. Just one good word from you to someone that may be having a difficult day may change their day and their outlook of the situation. So. as members of B.P.O.E Lodge 2202 make it a goal to try to say an encouraging word each day to another member in the month of May. God Bless America, Elks Lodge 2202 and its members. As we know from last year s success these Skirmish weekends are a profitable and fun weekend. Trap news. We thank again this year Billy Wolfe, PER for running a very successful Trap season. We welcomed quite a few new trap shooters, and had to make two emergency runs to Dick s Sporting Goods and Ken Flanagan made one 911 run to Andover Sportsman s club for targets.
