Before we say goodbye 2010 let s give ourselves a big pat-on-theback for the hard work we all performed for the Annual Camp Sunrise and Veterans Christmas Parties. The kids were excited when Santa arrived with his sack full of gifts. The Vets enjoyed a fine meal, played bingo, socialized and left with a gift bag of treats. We made a lot of people smile this holiday season. Why? We re Elks and that s what we do. Some additional special thanks go out to Don and Del Cyr for their donations to the Vet s bingo game and for Del s singing of the Star Spangled Banner. Thanks to the many Elks that decorated the hall with holiday spirit and to the dedicated cooks, cleaners, servers and observers, job well done. And let s not forget Santa, member Joe Rotundo, who arrived first class on a fire truck and personally delivered gifts to each waiting child. Thanks to member Vaughn Modine and his bucket truck for stringing the Christmas lights around our pine tree. Also in December we honored our deceased members during the Memorial Service. I want to thank those that attended and those officers that participated in the service. January will bring us another District Deputy meeting, the State Mid-Year Convention at the Branford lodge, Italian Night Dinner on January 22, and the continuation of Friday Night Dinners and Sunday Breakfast. Keep an eye on the House Committee news for more details on meals. Finally, our Lodge will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in Trustee Gerald Mon. Please consider getting involved as May will be here before you know it! Elk of the Month Theresa Shaw Theresa was a vital part of the Camp Sunrise and Veterans Christmas Parties. She had lots of great help but was most involved in the production of these events. For the month of January you may park your car in the space of honor. 2 CHARITY JUSTICE BROTHERLY LOVE FIDELITY From the Secretary s Desk Dues are now significantly past due for those still delinquent. In the coming months you will be receiving a final notice informing you that you will be dropped from the rolls per Grand Lodge Statues Dues notices will be mailed out mid to late February. Sandy Curtis Secretary Range Committee News I don't know if it was the spirit of Christmas or just fate. I just wish more members of our Lodge were at the last meeting of the Range Committee. It was our pleasure to have Exalted Ruler Del Rosso participate. He brought with him the wisdom of leadership and the deep understanding of the issues facing the committee. Besides old business, the ER suggested we come up with better hunting procedures as well as improved safety ideas, and present those ideas to the Lodge. These are issues that will affect every member who uses the range or hunts. Reminder, we hold our committee meetings on the third Thursday of the month at 7 pm. Always remember SAFETY FIRST when using a weapon. Please follow the rules and help keep the range clean by picking up any debris after you shoot. If you need a copy of the adopted Range Rules please see the Secretary for a copy. Propositions For Membership The Secretary s Office has received an application on the following individuals, read their names on the floor of our Lodge, and have forwarded them to the Investigation Committee for further processing. In accordance with Grand Lodge Statutes, any member knowing why any of these candidates should not be duly elected to membership, should notify a member of the Investigation Committee or one of the Lodge Officers. Each will be balloted on during a regularly scheduled Lodge meeting. House Committee News The Christmas Parties for the Rocky Hill Veterans and Camp Sunrise were a great success. Thanks to all the members who volunteered there time to cook, shop and decorate our Lodge. Without your support these events would not be what they are! Join us on January 22nd for Italian Night. Tickets are available at the bar now. Plan on coming for a great five course meal and dancing afterwards. The committee is looking for other to support them in discussing this weekend. Meetings will be held following each regularly scheduled Lodge Meeting. Please attend to discuss ideas and support the Lodge. But truthfully I find myself seeking the word that describes this event's true magnitude! ITALIAN NIGHT Saturday, January 22nd We have now surpassed in excess of 70 adults, family members and friends attending. So, the challenge continues... BRING IT ON! Our next one is January 9th, and then the 23rd. We will then continue with the second and fourth Sunday of each month through the end of May! With over 50 Veterans attending, they expressed their gratitude throughout the evening with many thanks. This event would not run smoothly without the dedicated help of volunteers; twenty-six to be exact. Special thanks to member Delphine Cyr who over the past several years has opened this event by singing "The Star Spangle Banner". The party ends with a bang when Don and Delphine Cyr donate two $50 cash bingo games. This is the highlight and oh you can imagine when the bingo numbers are being called how quite it is and the excitement when the winner is called! A story of the All American Volunteer. It all began back many a year with the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Volunteer soldiers, and many more, built America from shore to shore. Why is America such a wonderful place? Because volunteers are the base! Volunteers share their talents and time, for their efforts they ask not a dime! They serve their cities, county, or state. The value of their services are hard to rate. When called to duty, their response is quick. They rock cradles, serve hungry, and heal our sick. To try to set measure would be a waste. There is no dollar value that can be placed. Why do so many people serve as volunteers? There are so many reasons, some bring us to tears. For whatever their reasons for serving may be, Volunteers are the answer and always will be. There isn't enough money to pay for what they do. Just remember to say "Thanks" when they come to help you! Ken Sylvester

5 Youth Activities News ELKS CARE ELKS SHARE The Annual Camp Sunrise Holiday party was Fantastic! There are so many individuals who deserve honorable mention, but to do so it would take up the entire Upstart. The planning for this event requires endless hours and dedication. First, I would like to thank those who spent their Sunday at the Lodge decorating. Secondly, again I would actually love to list all of the members who went above and beyond by purchasing a gift for the 43 children who attended this year's party, but this is a never ending list. Without your generous donations this event certainly would not be the same. So, while I am unable to list you individually, please accept this THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! We had over 150 attendees this year. Again, while I am unable to list every person who assisted on the day of the event (over 16) THANK YOU! However, there is a member who literally lived at the club to ensure that this event went off without a hitch, which I feel should have an honorable mentioned and that person is Lecturing Knight Joe Grillo. I would also like to mention that we had a new member (less than 1 month) step up to the plate and volunteer. He also had his family join in and help. This is what our Lodge needs more of. Hats off to member Matt Zajak. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC If you have your own shotgun, bring it! If you don't have your own one will be available for you to borrow. Eye and ear protection are recommended and can be purchased on site, as well as ammo. Open to all levels...from first time to expert! Every Sunday September thru April at Noon Weather permitting!
