DEDICATED TO THE STUDENTS OF CHRIST COVENANT SCHOOL

USING THIS TEACHER S GUIDE OVERVIEW Investigating God s Word...At School is a Bible curriculum designed for Christian schools, grades 1st-5th. Each unit provides material for 9 weeks, divided into four lessons each week. More specifically, each lesson is designed to be taught over two days, in minute teaching blocks. This Bible curriculum also includes Scripture memory. DISTINCTIVES This Bible curriculum is unique in the following ways: (1) It teaches the entirety of God s Word, from Genesis to Revelation, over the course of five years. (2) It teaches the students how to study God s Word for themselves. (3) It includes daily quizzes in order to help the students build their Bible knowledge. (4) It teaches the students a Word of the Week each lesson to build their vocabularies. (5) Each lesson puts the texts of Scripture in historical context, teaching the children that the Bible is real history. (6) It trains the students to apply God s Word to their lives. (7) It systematically inculcates a Biblical worldview, training children to think Biblically. (8) It gives the students tools to defend their faith in Christ. COMPONENTS DAY ONE Each 2-day lesson begins with a lesson overview to give you the big picture of the Scripture being studied. It also includes a brief preparation section and a teaching encouragement to help get you started. Introduction. Each Day One starts with an introduction to the lesson. Younger children will be asked a question to provoke their thinking. Older children will be taught a Psalm or Proverb of the day to call them to study. Quiz Time. Next, the students are quizzed in order to train them to remember what they have learned. These quizzes will often cover what they learned the day before, but sometimes will cover material elsewhere in God s Word that they should already know. Major knowledge areas like the Ten Commandments, Days of Creation, etc., may be quizzed more often. It is recommended that your children write out the answers to the quiz and keep them in a Bible study journal. W.O.W! The W.OW! is the Word of the Week. Each lesson will introduce the students to a vital Biblical vocabulary word. These words are either found in the Scripture text itself, or they are important theological words that the children need to learn. The W.O.W! often provides the theme for the entire lesson. Historical Context. Each lesson, the Scripture text is placed in historical context by use of a timeline. It is essential that the children learn how the story of redemptive history fits together. Bible stories must not be viewed as detached scenes they are to be shown as a part of a much bigger picture. The timeline is a useful tool toward that end. Bible Investigation. The Bible Investigation time is the heart and soul of each day s lesson. It plunges the student directly into God s Word, not simply a paraphrase of a Bible story. All Scripture texts included in he curriculum are from the English Standard Version (ESV). The Bible reading is taken in short sections, separated by times of discussion, questions, and application points. This format allows ample opportunities to stop, think about and discuss what is being read. P6 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIY 1

Scripture Memory. At the end of each Day One of the two-day lesson, the students will be taught a Scripture memory verse. These memory texts will be connected to what was studied that day. And, since you will cover two lessons each week, the students will be memorizing two passages a week twice as much as most memory programs. COMPONENTS DAY TWO Day Two components include several Day One components, and add two very exciting sections to the study. Quiz Time. Day Two begins with a quiz. These quizzes are most often an intensive review of Day One material. Again, it is recommended that your children write out the answers to the quiz and keep them in a Bible study journal. Historical Context. As you prepare to read the Scripture, you will again have the opportunity to put it in historical context for the students. The timeline will visually demonstrate where you are in God s Word. Bible Investigation. Again, this is the heart and soul of each day s Bible time. Your students will learn how to study God s Word for themselves, as they read, answer questions, discuss, and apply the Bible to their lives. Worldview Builder. This component is found only in Day Two of each lesson. It has been created because of the need for our children to develop Christian worldviews. Developing a Christian worldview is the task of learning to look at everything in life through the lens of Scripture. It is being trained by the Holy Spirit and the Bible to think Biblically for the glory of God. particular pillar on the board, the students will be asked to list things about that truth that they learned in the lesson. Defend the Faith. A necessary component of a Bible curriculum is training our children how to defend the Christian faith. It is not good enough to give them Bible knowledge they must learn how to answer questions about what they believe and why they believe it. To that end, this section will present the students with a question that they will have to answer. You will also teach them the right answer after they have a chance to share their thoughts. This will begin the training of answering the skeptics and their attacks on Christianity. Scripture Memory. The day s lesson ends with a review of the Scripture memory passage. You may use any method to help the students put it to memory. AND FINALLY... Teaching God s Word is unlike any other subject that you teach in school. It is the only book that is inspired by God! It is the only text that truly changes lives, by the power of the Holy Spirit. So teach it with great passion and excitement, as well as great care. When you teach the Bible you are giving your students the greatest treasure they can ever possess! The Worldview Builder section helps the students to connect what they are studying to a pillar of a Christian worldview. The four main pillars that are used in this study are: Creation, Providence, Rationality, and the Fear of God. After putting the SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // P7

LESSON 1 // LEVITICUS 1:1-5:13 OVERVIEW The Book of Leviticus begins where the Book of Exodus left off with Moses in front of the Tabernacle. The LORD speaks again to Moses, giving more instructions on the sacrificial system that would now be installed at the tent of meeting. These first few chapters of Leviticus describe the burnt offering, the grain offering, the fellowship (peace) offering, and the sin offering. All have one major purpose in common: they are meant to deal with sin. The theme of atonement for sin appears over and over again in these chapters. The LORD instructs Moses to teach the people to lay their hands on the sacrifice as a transference of sin to the animal. All sin must be dealt with even unintentional sin (Leviticus 4) because God is holy and without sin. The fellowship offering is a special celebratory offering that is intended to remind the people of their peace with God. The grain offering provides a majority of the food for the priests. Except for the grain offering, these offerings all make use of the blood of animals to purify and cleanse the people from their sins. PREPARATION Briefly read and meditate on Leviticus 1-5 this week. TEACHING ENCOURAGEMENT Please resist the temptation to tell your children that we adults typically ignore the Book of Leviticus because we think it is boring and irrelevant. Let them think that this book is actually interesting and potentially lifetransforming! Seriously, do we really believe that all Scripture even Leviticus is useful for training us in righteousness? How can detailed descriptions of the sacrificial system, the ceremonies and feast days of Israel, do anything for our Christian lives today? Well, as with the rest of the Old Testament, Leviticus will teach your students incredible truths regarding the holiness of God, the sinfulness of humanity, and the need for atonement from sin! Over and over again, we are faced in these pages with the reality that sin is serious and MUST be dealt with in order for people to live. Get passionate about all of these sacrifices, since they are pictures of our one true Sacrifice Jesus! LESSON SCHEDULE Day One INTRODUCTION Welcome to Leviticus 2 3 mins. 10 DAY ONE INTRODUCTION Say: What is the name of the first book of the Bible? [Genesis.] What is the name of the second book of the Bible? [Exodus.] Today, we will begin studying the third book of the Old Testament: the Book of Leviticus. That s an interesting name for a book, isn t it? Well, this Bible book will teach us more about the priests of Israel and the system of sacrifices and worship. Most importantly, the Book of Leviticus teaches us more about God! QUIZ TIME Now, let s move on to QUIZ TIME. Today s questions: What was the name of the big tent God told Moses to build as a place of worship? How did Moses get all of the materials to construct the tabernacle? Did Moses construct the tabernacle just as God told him to? What filled the tabernacle when it was completed? Who was the first priest to serve as high priest in the tabernacle? Answers: 1. The tabernacle. 2. The Israelites freely gave the materials. 3. Yes. 4. The glory cloud of the LORD. 5. Aaron. Say: We ended our study of the Book of Exodus on a wonderful note God filled the tabernacle, and would continue to lead His people with His presence. What a picture of Jesus Christ who is always with His people today! P10 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1

W.O.W! Who wants to learn a new word? Our W.O.W! (Word of the Week) this week is ATONEMENT. Write the word on the board. This is such an important and marvelous word for Christians. If you pay attention to your pastor, you will hear him use this word a lot! To ATONE literally means to cover over. To cover over what? Well, when the Bible uses this word ATONE, it means to cover over SIN! If our sin is covered over, what does that mean? Allow answers. It means that it is forgiven! So, ATONEMENT is the forgiveness of sin that makes us right with God. As sinners, we are enemies of God and out of relationship with Him. We need ATONEMENT to bring us back to God! The Israelites needed ATONEMENT because they were sinners. You and I need ATONEMENT for our sins too. Listen for the word ATONEMENT this week, and see how God chose to cover over the sins of His people! HISTORICAL CONTEXT Put the timeline on the board to give the students some historical context. The Book of Leviticus only covers about one month of time. 12 BIBLE INVESTIGATION P12 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1 Introduction: The Book of Leviticus begins right where the Book of Exodus left off. Moses is at TABERNACLE, in the presence of the LORD. Let s begin reading. Read Leviticus 1: The LORD called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying, 2 Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When any one of you brings an offering to the LORD, you shall bring your offering of livestock from the herd or from the flock. 3 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish. He shall bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the LORD. Discussion: We are going to read a lot about offerings today. God s people were told to worship the LORD by bringing offerings of animals to Him. Where were the people to bring these offerings? [To the entrance of the tabernacle.] Why did God s people have to offer sacrifices to the LORD? Let s find out! Read verses He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. 5 Then he shall kill the bull before the LORD, and Aaron s sons the priests shall bring the blood and throw the blood against the sides of the altar that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 6 Then he shall flay the burnt offering and cut it into pieces, 7 and the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire. 8 And Aaron s sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, the head, and the fat, on the wood that is on the fire on the altar; 9 but its entrails and its legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall burn all of it on the altar, as a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the LORD. 10 If his gift for a burnt offering is from the flock, from the sheep or goats, he shall bring a male without blemish, Discussion: Did you hear our Word of the Week? The offering would make ATONEMENT for the person s sins. When a person brought an animal to be sacrificed and burned on the altar, he first put his hand on the head of the animal. Do you know why he did that? So that the animal could take his sins to the altar. Then what happened to the animal and the sins? They were burnt up! Application: We don t make burnt offerings to the LORD today, do we? This is a picture to us of how bad our sin is. Every sin needs to be ATONED for. Every sin keeps us from God. The Israelites had to offer a lot of animals, don t you think? Our sin must be paid for in order to have a relationship with God!

Let s read about another type of offering. Read Leviticus 2: When anyone brings a grain offering as an offering to the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour. He shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it 2 and bring it to Aaron s sons the priests. And he shall take from it a handful of the fine flour and oil, with all of its frankincense, and the priest shall burn this as its memorial portion on the altar, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the LORD. 3 But the rest of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the LORD s food offerings. Discussion: The Israelites were also told to bring an offering of grain. When the grain offering was burnt up on the altar, it was pleasing to God. Most of the grain offering was given to the priests, to provide food for them. It was part of Israelite worship to make sure the priests had food to eat! Let s move on to Chapter Three. Read Leviticus 3: If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offers an animal from the herd, male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the LORD. 2 And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering and kill it at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and Aaron s sons the priests shall throw the blood against the sides of the altar. 3 And from the sacrifice of the peace offering, as a food offering to the LORD, he shall offer the fat covering the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, 4 and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins, and the long lobe of the liver that he shall remove with the kidneys. 5 Then Aaron s sons shall burn it on the altar on top of the burnt offering, which is on the wood on the fire; it is a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the LORD. Discussion: Now God tells Moses about another type of offering a FELLOWSHIP offering. It is also called a peace offering. Why would God s people have to bring peace offerings? Allow answers. Most importantly, they needed to be at peace with God! This offering celebrated the fact that they could have fellowship and communion with God because of His covenant of grace. Application: You and I also need to be at peace with God. But we don t bring a fellowship offering to accomplish this, do we? Instead, Jesus is our peace offering. Because of His death, those who put their faith in Him have PEACE with God! Listen to more about this offering. SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1 // P13

Read verses If his offering for a sacrifice of peace offering to the LORD is an animal from the flock, male or female, he shall offer it without blemish. 7 If he offers a lamb for his offering, then he shall offer it before the LORD, 8 lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it in front of the tent of meeting; and Aaron s sons shall throw its blood against the sides of the altar. Application: Did you hear how the lamb had to be without defect? That means the lamb was to be spotless and pure. Only a spotless pure lamb could be a good sacrifice for the sins of the people. Jesus is that lamb without defect! Isn t that great? Conclusion: To have FELLOWSHIP with God, we must have a sacrifice for our sins. The blood of lambs or goats will not do. This blood cannot save us. Who s blood was shed for us that gives us peace with God? [The blood of Christ.] As we continue our study of Leviticus, watch for more word pictures of Jesus and what He has done for us. You ll be amazed to see what God has done for His people! SCRIPTURE MEMORY Read the Scripture Memory verse (Hebrews 13:15) together. Hebrews 13:15 (ESV) 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Say: We don t offer sacrifices of animals or grain anymore, do we? But, we still offer sacrifices! Our sacrifice must be praise telling God how great and wonderful He is. We can only do this because Jesus became our perfect sacrifice! Review the verse a couple of times. Close in prayer. P14 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1

DAY TWO QUIZ TIME Let s begin today with QUIZ TIME. Are you ready? Today s questions: What book of the Bible are we studying? What are some of the offerings the priests were to bring to God? What sorts of animals were the Israelites to bring to the priests to sacrifice? What is the pure, spotless lamb a picture of? Answers: 1. Leviticus. 2. Burnt offering, grain offering, fellowship offering. 3. Bulls, goats, lambs, doves, pigeons. 4. Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. The Book of Leviticus continues the giving of God s laws to His people. Why did they have to give regular sacrifices to the LORD? [Because they were sinners.] Since we are sinner too, we need the perfect sacrifice, Jesus Christ! HISTORICAL CONTEXT Put the timeline on the board to give the students some historical context. The Book of Leviticus only covers about one month of time. 16 BIBLE INVESTIGATION Introduction: We ll begin our reading in Leviticus 4 today. The LORD has more instructions about offerings for the Israelites. Let s be good investigators of God s Word today. Read Leviticus 4: And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If anyone sins unintentionally in any of the LORD s commandments about things not to be done, and does any one of them, 3 if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then he shall offer for the sin that he has committed a bull from the herd without blemish to the LORD for a sin offering. 4 He shall bring the bull to the entrance of the tent of meeting before the LORD and lay his hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull before the LORD. Discussion: Now the LORD tells Moses what to do when people sin unintentionally that means they sin without planning to sin. If a priest sins, what does he have to do? [Offer a young bull.] Did you hear that he has to lay his hand on its head? Why does he have to do that? [To place his sins on the bull.] Yes, this is a sin offering for ATONEMENT, so the sins can be covered. Let s keep reading. Read verses If the whole congregation of Israel sins unintentionally and the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they do any one of the things that by the LORD s commandments ought not to be done, and they realize their guilt, 14 when the sin which they have committed becomes known, the assembly shall offer a bull from the herd for a sin offering and bring it in front of the tent of meeting. 15 And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull before the LORD, and the bull shall be killed before the LORD. 16 Then the anointed priest shall bring some of the blood of the bull into the tent of meeting, 17 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD in front of the veil. 18 And he shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is in the tent of meeting before the LORD, and the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 19 And all its fat he shall take from it and burn on the altar. 20 Thus shall he do with the bull. As he did with the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this. And the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. 21 And he shall carry the bull outside the camp and burn it up as he burned the first bull; it is the sin offering for the assembly. P16 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1

Discussion: What happens if the WHOLE nation of Israel sins unintentionally? [A bull must be sacrificed for their sins.] Again, the elders would offer this bull as ATONEMENT for sins. Do you hear all the blood that had to be shed? Whose blood is shed for you? [Christ s blood!] Summary: Verses tell us that if leaders or any member of the community sins unintentionally a sin offering must be made. In these cases, it is a goat that is sacrificed. More blood is shed! These are pictures of the need for a perfect sacrifice. Let s read the end of the chapter. Read verses If he brings a lamb as his sin offering, he is to bring a female without defect. 33 He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it for a sin offering at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. 34 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 35 He shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the lamb of the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar on top of the offerings made to the LORD by fire. In this way the priest will make atonement for him for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven. Discussion: Did you hear our Word of the Week again? How would a person get ATONEMENT for his sins? [Sacrifice a lamb as a burnt offering.] Did you also hear all the blood that must be sprinkled from the lamb? Blood is the symbol of cleansing. Blood must be shed for there to be forgiveness. Application: Boys and girls, whenever you hear of a lamb being sacrificed, and blood being shed for sin, it should remind you of one thing Jesus, the lamb of God! Only Jesus can atone for sins. God was giving His people Israel a picture of Jesus who was to come in the future. Until Jesus came, the sacrifice of lambs had to be done over and over again, for each and every sin. Now, Chapter Five goes into more details about all the sin that must be dealt with. Listen to some of them. Read Leviticus 5: If anyone sins in that he hears a public adjuration to testify, and though he is a witness, whether he has seen or come to know the matter, yet does not speak, he shall bear his iniquity; 2 or if anyone touches an unclean thing, whether a carcass of an unclean wild animal or a carcass SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1 // P17

of unclean livestock or a carcass of unclean swarming things, and it is hidden from him and he has become unclean, and he realizes his guilt; 3 or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever sort the uncleanness may be with which one becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it, and realizes his guilt; 4 or if anyone utters with his lips a rash oath to do evil or to do good, any sort of rash oath that people swear, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it, and he realizes his guilt in any of these; Discussion: God is setting laws for all of life, isn t He? What a person says or doesn t say is important to God. What a person does or doesn t do is important to God. His law shows us our sin, that s for sure. It shows us our need for a Savior. Let s finish our reading for today. Read verses 5-6, when he realizes his guilt in any of these and confesses the sin he has committed, 6 he shall bring to the LORD as his compensation for the sin that he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin. 13 Thus the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin which he has committed in any one of these things, and he shall be forgiven. And the remainder shall be for the priest, as in the grain offering. Discussion: There s our Word of the Week again! All of these offerings were for the purpose of ATONEMENT for sin. Do you think God knew that His people would continue to sin? Yes! And He also knew they needed their sins covered. Conclusion: We don t offer sacrifices and burnt offerings anymore. But that doesn t mean that we are any less sinful than the Israelites. Our sacrifice for sin has already come and done His work on the cross. Who is our sacrifice? A bull? A lamb? A goat? Some grain? No! It is Jesus! Jesus makes ATONEMENT for our sin. These offering rules may seem very strange to us. But, we need to continue to read the Book of Leviticus to know more of who God is, how sinful we are, and our need for the perfect sacrifice. We will pick up in Leviticus 5 next week! P18 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1

WORLDVIEW BUILDER Say: It s time to use what we have learned in God s Word this week to build our Christian minds. God has given us minds to think rightly and to believe the TRUTH. Draw the Fear of God Pillar on the board. We will be building on our Fear of God pillar today. To fear God is to love Him, honor and worship Him, and obey Him. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom! So, what things did we learn about the FEAR OF GOD in Leviticus 1-5? Assist your students to think of the following truths (connect them to the pillar on the board): FEAR OF GOD 1. God requires offerings from His people. 2. Our sin must be atoned for. 3. Fearing God means bringing our offerings to Him. 4. God requires blood to be shed for the forgiveness of sins. 5. Those who fear God will obey all that He commands. God is the one who sets the rules about how we can come to Him. Our offering to God today is ourselves! We must give our whole selves to God as living sacrifices. DEFEND THE FAITH Say: Now, it s time to build our defenses up. You and I must always be prepared to defend and protect our faith in Jesus Christ. Just remember what the apostle Peter said: I Peter 3:15 (ESV) 15 Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you Let s get more PREPARED to give answers about the hope we have in Jesus Christ! Let me ask you a question and see how you do SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1 // P19

Q: How did Christ atone for our sins? A lot of people believe that Jesus Christ was just a prophet or a good teacher. They don t believe He came to make atonement for sin. Christianity is built on the truth that we are sinners who need our sins forgiven. So, how did Christ atone for sin? Allow answers. Make sure the children have these elements in their answer: A: Jesus Christ lived a perfect life and died a perfect death as our perfect sacrifice. He could bear our sins because He is our pure and spotless Lamb of God. His death satisfied the wrath of God for sins. His death reconciles God s people to God. All those who put their faith in Jesus enjoy atonement for their sins. Say: Do you need your sins atoned for? Nothing but the blood of Jesus will accomplish it. If He is your LORD and SAVIOR, then He has paid the price for your sins! SCRIPTURE MEMORY Write this lesson s Scripture Memory verse (Hebrews 13:15) on the board. Hebrews 13:15 (ESV) 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Use any method to review the verse with your students. Close in prayer. P20 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 1 // LESSON 1
