She represented the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY. A parishioner remarked to me how Sister used the scriptures of the day in her talk. She probably was the first speaker ever to do that, and I appreciated that she made the effort. I remind you that the second collection today after Communion is for the Missions. Here is not much in the way of parish news this week, so I decided to use the space to talk about St. Mary Magdalene. Today, the 22 nd is her feast day. I got the idea to write about the Magdalene because on Wednesday evening my father had on a docudrama about her. I was busy doing my own thing to watch it. Mary Magdalene has been an object of curiosity for a long time, and if you remember Dan Brown s book, The Davinci Code, it made her and her relationship with Jesus a hot topic of conversation. There has been both confusion and disagreement over Mary Magdalene s identity over the centuries. She has been identified as the unnamed penitent woman who washed Jesus feet with her tears and dried them with her hair because Luke mentions Mary right after his account of the former woman, but that assumption has been discredited. It was also thought that she is Mary, the sister of Lazarus. Such heavy weights as St. Jerome, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, and St. Thomas questioned that view, but left the question unresolved. The Eastern Church always made a distinction between Mary Magdalene and Mary of Bethany. I don t know for sure what modern scholars are saying, but I have been led to understand that they do not believe that the women are one and the same. In Luke s Gospel, Mary is first mentioned in chapter 8:2. We learn there that Mary, surnamed Magdalene, meaning she came from the town of Magdela, was cured by Jesus of seven demons. He further tells that certain women were with the Twelve, including Mary, who served them. That fact is pretty significant. Mary Magdalene s experience with Jesus turned her into a disciple, and, in gratitude to her Lord for the cure, devoted herself to Him. So strong was her devotion that she was one of the few people who remained with Jesus at His crucifixion, and, as you know, it was her love that brought her to the tomb early on Sunday morning. God recognized this profound love and devotion and rewarded Mary s faithfulness by giving her the privilege of being the first person to see Jesus in His risen splendor. St. Mary Magdalene s ardent love for Jesus which translated into fidelity and service, her courage to stand with Jesus on Calvary, and her profession of faith in the risen Lord teach us how to be true disciples. -Fr. 3 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME We offer our condolences to the family of Susan Lenihan Donna Scalzo who passed away last week. ***SAINT PETER SCHOOL NEWS*** Box Tops for Education -Thank you for continuing to clip box tops from the many brands which participate in the program. We recently collected your donations from the blue box in the Church vestibule. There are a lot of them! Wonderful! We should tell you that the Labels for Education program was ended. A few Campbell soup cans may still have the label, but there is now no need to bring in the soup labels. (Progresso brand, however, participates in Box Tops!) Likewise, the Yoplait rewards program is over. Proceeds from the Box Tops will be used this year for sports. Again, thank you! The Diocese of Bridgeport is interested in hiring an educator to teach 3 and 4 year old students in an after school enrichment pre-school program based at St. Peter School. Activities will be provided for student work. Some time will also be spent assisting students and parent during cooperative activities. This is a late afternoon into evening program consisting of three consecutive days for one week in the late summer and various six week sessions within the usual school year schedule.
