SACRIFICIAL GIVING November 5, $ 9,388 Our weekly goal...$ 10,500 Thank you for your support. Father Mecca Please remember St. Peter Parish when preparing your will. A legacy to the church eases your tax burden and helps continue the good works of our parish. WE WELCOME THE NEWLY BAPTIZED Daniel Batista Alexander Lang Fabio Rodriguez-Orejuela Jacob Nieves Llivipuma DANBURY, CT I want to begin the column today with a look back at last weekend, commenting on and giving thanks to many in the parish. First, we celebrated the 10:30 Mass for all our parishioners who died in the last twelve months since last All Souls Day. Many family members attended and were grateful that we remembered their loved ones and prayed in such a special way for them. I want to thank Glen and the choir for the lovely music which they prepared. The choir members always embrace this particular Mass, as they do every occasion, and put their hearts and souls into the music. It showed for it was very beautiful. I want to use this opportunity to also thank Sr. Mary Bernard for her ministry. Sister read the names of the deceased. I was happy that she is recovered enough to be present. Although still with pain and diminished mobility, Sr. is once again making visits to our elderly and homebound. She had a personal connection with many of the deceased so it was with genuine affection that she read off the names. The second event last week was the Men s Club s breakfast. I want to compliment the gentlemen for having it and for doing such a nice job. I also want to thank the parishioners who came downstairs to have breakfast. I was not able to be with you very much at all--only for a half hour after the 10:30 Mass--as I was celebrating the 9 a.m. Mass at the Brazilian Pastoral Center and the Mass upstairs. The breakfast was fresh and warm, and the profit the men realized will help a deserving student with tuition at St. Peter School. That is a very good thing. Something else took place last Sunday involving three young St. Peter parishioners. At Holy Cross Church in Fairfield, Nina Adebambo, Belen Aguayo, and Nicholas D Ostilio received either or both the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation from Bishop Caggiano in a ceremony for children with special needs. We congratulate Nina, Belen, and Nick for the hard work they put into their studies to be ready to experience these marvelous encounters with our living God. Looking ahead now, the Thanksgiving holiday is coming up on us awfully quickly. Our annual food drive to provide all the elements of a Thanksgiving meal plus more food and personal care items for the needy is underway. I would say more than half of the five hundred bags prepared were taken last week. Thank you. The bags are once again at the door, so if you would like to donate to those in need during this season of thanksgiving, you still can. The groceries we do not use go to the city s food pantry. Our Community Concerns Committee made the decision last year to divide the contributions between food and personal care items. Why? Because the pantry is inundated with foodstuffs this time of year, and while that is wonderful, many of the same people who need food also need those personal care items which are not donated in large quantities like BANNS OF MARRIAGE Javier Gomez and Meghan King Michael Burke and Valerie Maskara
3 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME food is. That s quite understandable. People don t want to see others go hungry. It s the Committee s hope that we might contribute toward the fulfillment of peoples other basic needs through the donation of personal care items. The food list is printed on orange paper; the personal care items on green. You do not need to carry the bag into the vestibule with you when you bring it back. You can leave it at either door to the parish hall. All the donations end up down there anyway. We really need the bags back next weekend. The baskets will be put together on Sunday. Thank you for your spirit of giving. -Fr. Years ago, November was called the Dark Days as a preparation for us to know Advent will soon be upon us. I am keenly aware of the daylight as I drive to school and I cannot help but think of our school day about to begin. Each and every day, we have the beauty and glory of greeting God s greatest creation, our students of St. Peter School. Our volunteer tutors are here meeting with and teaching our children in small groups. Math has become a subject to enjoy as multiplication and division become a challenge the students can handle rather than dread. Language Arts has become a time to imagine, write and create. Soon we will be hosting an Open House and will encourage you to visit. Explore the facets of matter with our science classes. Read along with our children who have discovered the magic of reading about pumpkins and then decorating one as a character they read about. As you probably know, our basketball season has arrived. Our junior varsity, both boys and girls, have already scored victory as they won their very first games. We are a school like no other. Come and visit! You will have a wonderful experience! -Mrs. Mary McCormack, Principal Nov. 19 Grades 1,2,3, 4C, 5,7 attend class from 10:30 to 11:45 St. Peter School Grades 4, 6 and 8 attend 9:00 am mass and be certain to meet your catechist for attendance and then sit with your family.
