This sixth chapter of St. John s Gospel is so important for our theology of the Eucharist. We cannot preach, write or meditate enough on it. Saint Paul in the second reading today instructs the people of Ephesis not to grieve the Holy Spirit of God. There are several incidents in the Gospels when I sense our beautiful Lord was grieved by people because they are not making the connections, not allowing themselves to move into the realm of faith. In a funny coincidence, this morning before I sat down to write a column, Fr. Leonel and I were discussing a great obstacle we have with the faith formation of children and families. What is at issue? The lack of understanding or unwillingness to hear that sacraments are not the goal in and of themselves but a vehicle to a life of Grace. It grieves us today when we encounter such gross consumorism as Jesus himself did. Jesus said to the people that they were not looking for him because they recognized a sign but because they ate the loaves. Jesus wants people to have faith IN Him. He wants us to approach Him because we understand who He is and that the Grace we receive gives us real life here and in the life to come. The lack of news during the summer gives me the opportunity in this space to continue to offer you further meditation on today s Gospel. Have you ever approached a hushed group and were certain they were talking about you? It's an uncomfortable feeling to catch people murmuring about what you did, said, or didn't do. It breeds division and exclusion. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to just the opposite. The reading opens with the crowds "murmuring" their doubts about Jesus after he has proclaimed himself the Bread of Life. "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? How can he say 'I have come down from heaven'? In his response, Jesus brings up the Israelites and the manna God brought them in the desert. If you turn back to the story in Exodus, you'll see another similar word: murmuring. As the going got tough, the Israelites doubted Moses and God's plan to protect and care for them as a chosen people. Here, Jesus proposes a difficult theological concept. Jesus himself is "the living bread" and "flesh for the life of the world." This is not an exclusive concept. "Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me." Why? Because "the Father who sent me draw[s] him." The next time you're at Mass, take a few moments to watch the communion line. Young and old, families and singles, diverse races and cultures and stories. We are all drawn to the Eucharistic table. Catholic doctrine may require faith and faith is possible for anyone who seeks truth. Christianity does not hide behind locked doors in an exclusive clubhouse, whispering behind the backs of nonbelievers. Jesus compels us to share the love of God the Father for his children, that we one day be joined with Him and "live forever." -Fr. Mecca

JOIN US IN THE VINEYARD -For families with children who are entering Kinderarten and/or First grade this September we invite you to join us in the Vineyard! Each week beginning September 30th from 10:45 to 11:30 am there will be Bible stories, crafts and family activities. Sessions will follow the religious education calendar, each week that we hold classes there will be a Vineyard adventure. There is no need to register for these sessions simply drop in with your child and experience God together. Sessions will be held in St. Peter School. There is no charge for these sessions, however you will be asked to sign in each time you come. All students must be accompanied by a parent. 4 AUGUST 12, 2018 Back to School Collection sponsored by the Community Concerns Committee will be held the weekends of August 11 & 12 and August 18 & 19. Please leave your donations in the vestibule of the church. As always, the most needed item is backpacks. Other items include: pencils, pens, markers, notebooks, loose-leaf paper and binders, erasers and rulers. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Old Time School Desks We replaced some older school desks, and before we send them off for scrap, we are offering them to anyone who might like one. The desk is ideal if your child, or grandchild, needs a place to do homework or art. A $10 donation would be appreciated. Call if you are interested. ***OTHER EVENTS*** The Annual Diocesan Blue Mass honoring Fire, Police and First Responders will be held on Sunday, September 10, 12 Noon at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk. A reception immediately following Mass will be held in the Masterpool Great Room on the parish grounds. Bishop Frank J. Caggiano will be the main celebrant along with diocesan priests who serve as police and fire chaplains in Fairfield County. Fr. Charles Allen, special assistant to the President of Fairfield University, is serving as chairman of the event. Law Enforcement, Fire and Emergency Medical Service personnel of all faiths in Fairfield County along with members of the general public are invited to attend the Mass and reception.
