The Scrutinies are special prayers that the Church offers on behalf of her Elect, that is, those adults who are preparing to receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist) at Easter. We read in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good (no. 141). The Scrutinies take place on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent. According to the Church s ancient tradition, these rites are linked to particular Gospel readings that develop the themes of purification and enlightenment, which are the focus of the Elect s final preparation. Thus, the Church successively reads the stories of the woman at the well (John 4:5 42), the man born blind (John 9:1 41), and the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1 45) when the Scrutinies are celebrated. Fasting and Abstinence During Lent All Catholic ages 14 and older are obliged to abstain from eating meat on the Fridays of Lent. Animal flesh is not eaten out of respect for the flesh (body) of Christ, which was crucified for our salvation on a Friday (Good Friday). While fasting from the normal amount of food is not required on the Fridays of Lent, it is nevertheless an excellent spiritual practice, as is extra time spent in prayer and works of charity such as almsgiving. These penitential practices underscore that Fridays even Fridays outside of Lent are days of penance for the whole Church. As Catholics, we seek to express our sorrow for Christ s Passion and Death on this day, and to unite our sacrifices to his, in order to purify the world of sin. Lenten Hospitality In keeping with the penitential spirit of Lent, there will be no hospitality after the 5:00pm vigil Mass on Saturday, March 8, nor on Saturday, April 5. During Lent, only coffee will be served after the 9:00am Mass. Stations of the Cross, Confessions, and Fish Fry The Stations of the Cross are prayed on the Fridays of Lent at 7:00pm in the church. Confessions are heard beforehand in the daily Mass chapel at 6:30pm. From 5:00 to 6:30pm, the young people of the parish sponsor a fish fry in the Multipurpose Room ($5.00/plate with maximum of $20.00 per family). French Proverb Extra Confessions In an effort to make the Sacrament of Penance more available during Lent, confessions will be heard on Fridays from 6:30 to 7:00pm. This will give people an opportunity to participate in the parish fish fry (5:00 6:30pm), as well as the Stations of the Cross (7:00pm). Please also note that multiple priests will be on hand to hear confessions on Thursday, March 20 from 7:00 to 8:30pm. Divine Mercy Chaplet During Lent, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy will be prayed 10 minutes before weekend Masses. This devotion originated in a vision of Our Lord to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska ( ), a religious of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. The Divine Mercy Chaplet is an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist, and is therefore an excellent preparation for Mass. Please bring a Rosary with you, as the Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed using those beads. There will be pamphlets available that contain the prayers used in the Chaplet. Rice Bowls This second week of Lent, CRS Rice Bowl takes us to Guatemala, where cultural and economic factors mean many children must work to support their families instead of attending school, playing sports or growing and developing alongside their friends. We meet thirteen-year-old Yuvi, who can now attend school full-time thanks to a CRS program that educates parents on the dangers of child labor and the importance of school and social activities. We consider our Rights, as well as our Responsibility to protect the rights of all people. (Catholic social teaching principle: Rights and Responsibilities.) Prayer: Join us this week as we thank God for being able to attend school, learn, and grow, and ask Him to help those who have not been given this opportunity. 5 MINISTERIO HISPANO II DOMINGO DE CUARESMA Día 16 de marzo de 2014 Ayuno y abstinencia durante Cuaresma Se obliga a los católicos de 14 años para arriba a abstenerse de comer carne roja en los viernes de Cuaresma. No se consume la carne de animales por respeto a la carne de Cristo, la cual fue crucificada por nuestra salvación en un viernes (Viernes Santo). Aunque no es obligatorio ayunar de la cantidad normal de comida en los viernes de Cuaresma, sin embargo es una práctica espiritual excelente, tal como es rezar más y hacer obras de caridad. Vía Crucis, confesiones, y cena Se va a rezar el Via crucis los viernes de Cuaresma a las 7:00pm en el templo. Habrá confesiones en la capilla a partir de las 6:30pm. De entre 5:00 y 6:30pm, habrá una cena de pescado ($5.00) en la cafetería del colegio. Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia Durante Cuaresma, se va rezar la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia 10 minutos antes de la Misa dominical. Esta devoción tiene su origen en una visión de Nuestro Señor a santa María Faustina Kowalska ( ), religiosa de la Congregación de las Hermanas de Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia. La Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia es una oración intercesora que extiende la oblación de la Eucaristía; por lo tanto es una excelente preparación para la Misa. Favor de traer un Rosario consigo, porque se reza la Coronilla con él. Colaboración El domingo pasado recaudamos $ para la colecta.
