Like most of our spring, the weekend will have its ups and downs. We are keeping fingers crossed for a dry stretch of skies on Monday so that our community may enjoy a long time tradition here, the Memorial Day parade. Since we have plenty of parking, I invite our parishioners to feel quite free to park and come across the street to watch the parade from our property. A good many people already do that, so many so that at times I ve spent the whole morning talking, going from group to group. Last Sunday we hosted a reception for our wonderful volunteers. It was very lovely and we were able to greet and converse with many of our volunteers. Some others told us that they had conflicting obligations, and we were disappointed not to see them. It is always tricky finding the right time of year for these things. I know of one parish that conducts its reception during the Christmas season when everyone is into merry making, but for me, that time is much too stressful. In the winter there is always the threat of bad weather and then it is Lent and Easter and the celebration of the sacraments. May is a really pleasant month, but I realize the month brings with it many family events like graduations and wedding showers. Next year we may try early in the month of thanksgiving, November, before people s lives get busy. I want to thank our staff and some volunteers who planned and prepared the food, set it out beautifully, bar tended, and cleaned up afterwards. Above all, many thanks to our volunteers who perform many ministries and keep our parish functioning. We could never run without you. Four couples from our parish participated in the Wedding Jubilee Mass this spring with Bishop Caggiano. Celebrating significant anniversaries are Joseph & Anna Thampoe (60 years), Jim & Mary Ann Matthews (50 years), Lawrence & Ann Marie Seavy-Cioffi (35 years), and Hugo & Livia Ganzhi (25 years). I want to acknowledge these milestones and congratulate these couples. How beautiful and fortunate to share the sacrament of marriage upholding and building one another with the life giving power of divine love. If you have a notable anniversary coming up next year, watch the bulletin for the announcement of the Jubilee Mass with the bishop. Our office will be delighted to make the arrangements for you to attend. It is time to begin to make everyone aware of our spring tag sale. It is not the biggest of money makers for sure, but it brings in a couple of thousand, and we need every dollar. (Look at the offertory below, $7,000 again). It is also not as easy of a fund raiser at it seems. There is a good deal of work to go through the donations, price, and organize them. I will say this, however. Changing the location indoors is a great help. Up until last year, we were squeezing the donations into three garage bays and always at some point we could no longer move about. Our back hallway downstairs and an area in the parish hall get
3 crowded, but the set up is so much easier and nothing is dependent on our unpredictable weather. Maybe you are changing things up at home or want to clear out an accumulation of things. Our tag sale is the time to move it on out. You benefit, someone else benefits and the parish benefits. What a good feeling! See the large advertisement on the following page for what we accept and the hours for drop off. Thank you! Let s end as we began with Memorial Day and the real meaning of this day. We know that it is said, and it is true, that we can suffer from a lack of memory. As a society, it is not good to forget our history nor our country men and women who loved country more than life. Let us remember them all beginning with our revolution of 1776 right up to this year with the soldiers killed in Afghanistan and honor them with prayer and thanksgiving. Let us pray, too, for peace. Our world seems to be becoming less rather than more stable as the democratic systems set in place after the defeat of totalitarianism in the last century are coming under unsettling attack. Pray in the words of a hymn I frequently quote, O God of Love, O King of Peace, make wars throughout the world to cease. The wrath of sinful man restrain. Give peace, O God, give peace again. -Fr. Mecca Remember the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal Donors 226 Amount Pledged $ 95,341 Parish Goal $ 120,000 Thank you for your support. Once again we at St. Peter School need to take time and remember the land on which we live, the Church where we gather in prayer, and the school that has withstood the test of time. No matter where we go or to whom we talk, St. Peter School is spoken of with words of pride and joy. On this Memorial Day, let us remember all those past and present who have passed through and continue to pass through these hallowed halls. Save the Dates: Our May Crowning is Thursday, May 31, at 1:15 p.m., the Feast of the Visitation of Mary when she visited her cousin Elizabeth. 4 ***PARISH EVENTS*** Our Community Concerns Committee would like to add a feature to our program allowing you to contribute gift cards to this ministry. However, it is most important that you understand the reasons behind this request first. Over the last several months our committee has experienced a large increase in need in our community. It is not so much from those that have made requests in the past but from a growing group made up mostly of working women with children. They face husbands who have abandoned them or died, children who are physically or emotionally ill, sick spouses, death of children, incarcerated husbands, loss of employment and the list continues. We very often help by referring them to the proper agency when possible. However, we are called to walk with our brothers and sisters in their hardships and so we try to maintain a relationship as much as possible. It would be an outward gesture of concern if we could offer a gift card to help ease their burdens when we see them. We would like to suggest that you donate your gift cards that sit in your drawers left unused. Stores such as Walmart, Target, and Walgreens or any stores with a cross section of uses would be most helpful. You can drop the card in the collection basket on any Sunday. We greatly appreciate anything that you contribute. May you always be aware of the great love that Our Lord has for each of you! -Christine Moore MAY 27, 2018 Clean Sweep Tag Sale Saturday, June 16 10:00 to 3:00 p.m. St. Peter Church will hold its annual in St. Peter Parish Hall and in the Parking Lot. In this popular prayer, attributed to one of Ireland s most beloved patron saints, St. Patrick asks for divine protection before successfully converting the Irish King Leonghaire and his subjects to Christianity (according to tradition, at least). It is an appropriate prayer to sing on Trinity Sunday, as the prayer opens and closes with the powerful image of being bound into the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Glen Segger, Music Minister
