A legacy to the church eases your tax burden and helps continue the good works of our parish. WE WELCOME THE NEWLY BAPTIZED Collin Agius Hayden Agius Benedict Espinal Sophia Suknanan KINDLY REMEMBER THE SICK OF THE PARISH Richard Botelho Marie Carroll Patricia Dean Nubia Dekker Paul Hart Jack Maher Teddy Marchione Dylan McBeth Gloria McLarty Christopher McLaughlin John Palinkas Rick Sarcia DANBURY, CT Today is a significant anniversary. It is the 100 th anniversary of the signing of the armistice ending World War I. At our last Parish Council meeting, I asked the members what they thought of having some kind of remembrance at our Masses. They liked the idea, and Marita Repole and Paulette Pepin joined me in planning a simple yet fitting commemoration during which we can recognize all the veterans from our parish present and past. And so, we are asking a veteran or two at each Mass to place a wreath by the pulpit before the beginning of the Liturgy. Steve Flanagan, parishioner and historian, volunteered to write something that we could share with the parishioners. His account of Armistice Day 1918 in Danbury is one of the inserts in your bulletin today. We salute our veterans and say thank you with grateful hearts for their donation of themselves to our country and to the ideals on which our society rests. Let us pray earnestly for peace. As we watch the turmoil in the world and the nationalistic fervor rising in European countries, here, and in Brazil, we worry that the vision, efforts, and institutions created to foster mutual cooperation after the indescribable horrors and suffering of the two world wars are being eroded. Our God intends us to live in community, in mutual charity. We pray that humanity will choose the path of peace, a path that requires not self promotion and aggrandizement but genuine caritas, a loving care for one another. The Men s Society is hosting their annual Harvest Breakfast. It will be a bit cool, I understand, today so it is a perfect time to dash downstairs after Mass for hot food and coffee. Our parish hall is not looking pretty, but that s ok. We can make due, and, besides, we create the atmosphere by our warmth, fraternity, and good humor. The proceeds from the breakfast support the Sister Marita Daniels Scholarship which helps deserving students at St. Peter School. The response to the annual Thanksgiving food collection was better than I can remember. After the noon Mass, there was not one grocery bag left. We prepared 500! If you did not take a bag and still want to contribute to the collection, bring in the items in any bag. We will place some copies of the grocery lists on the tables in the vestibule so you know what items are required for the Thanksgiving meal and those most in demand at the food pantry. The raffle drawing is only a month away. I implore you, if you have not taken a book of tickets home already, to take one this weekend so that you can begin to sell some tickets top your family members and friends. The tickets are $5 each for cash prizes of $5,000, $2,500, and $1,000. Many of us will see family on Thanksgiving Day. While the topic of religion and politics should be avoided at the table, supporting your parish need not be! We have a lot of things that need attention around our lovely campus. The raffle allows us to pay for repairs and improvements. Speaking of which, our contractor has completed his estimates for the repairs to the church hall for the insurance adjustor from Catholic Mutual. Over the last few years, we
3 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME have had to use the raffle proceeds to make our buildings water tight. The work in the parish hall will largely be covered by insurance. I say largely because we figure that we may as well do some upgrades here and there, particularly in the kitchen, while we have the workers here. The kitchen did not participate in the improvements of It is ready for some attention to make it more functional, increase storage, and improve lighting. The raffle can make those things happen. -Fr. Mecca Music Notes: Eternal Father Strong to Save (Navy Hymn) November 11 marks the 100 th anniversary of the end of WWI. In many countries, this event is commemorated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. In the United States, Armistice Day was observed until 1954, when it was renamed Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honor the service of all US veterans. Our recessional hymn this week, Eternal Father Strong to Save, was written by the English hymnist, Willian Whiting, in Based on the imagery of Psalm 107, this hymn speaks to the dangers of the sea and implores the Trinity for protection. It has been adopted by our Navy as the Navy Hymn. The version in our hymnal, however, is a revision that asks for protection for those on sea (verse 1), land (verse 2) and air (verse 3), thus making this a hymn inclusive of all three branches of our military. -Glen Segger, Music Minister St. Peter s offers two programs for our middle school and high school teens.
