We offer our condolences to the families of William Dingersen, Sr. Joseph Francisco Linda Lee Poulin Keith Pierce who passed away last week DANBURY, CT Today is the Epiphany, also known as Little Christmas and Three Kings Day, and the close of our Christmas Season. I decided to offer you a sermon by Pope St. Leo the Great, elected pope in 440, who wrote many Christmas sermons. He was passionate about the Incarnation, strenuously defending the doctrine against those who challenged the two-fold nature of Jesus. This sermon is one which he wrote for the Feast of the Epiphany, and it is printed in the Office of Readings for today. But, before we go to it, I want to express my thanks and that of Frs. Riley and Merry to our parishioners who sent us beautiful cards and or Christmas treats. We appreciate your affection and thoughtfulness. The loving providence of God determined that in the last days he would aid the world set on its course to destruction. He decreed that all nations should be saved in Christ. A promise had been made to the holy patriarch Abraham in regard to these nations. He was to have a countless progeny, born not from his body but from the seed of faith. Let the full number of the nations now take their place in the family of the patriarchs. In the persons of the Magi let all people adore the Creator of the universe; let God be known, not in Judea only, but in the whole world, so that his name may be great in all Israel. Dear friends, now that we have received instruction in this revelation of God s grace, let us celebrate with spiritual joy the day of the first calling of the Gentiles. Let us give thanks to the merciful God, who has made us worthy, in the worlds of the Apostle, to share the position of the saints in light; who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of his beloved Son. As Isaiah prophesied, The people of the Gentiles, who sat in darkness, have seen a great light, and for those who dwelt in the region of the shadow of death a light has dawned. He spoke of them to the Lord: The Gentiles, who do not know you, will invoke you, and the peoples, who knew you not, will take refuge in you. This is the day that David prophesied in the psalms, when he said: All the nations that you have brought into being will come and fall down in adoration in your presence, Lord, and glorify your name. Again, the Lord has made known his salvation; in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. This came to be fulfilled, as we know, from the time when the star beckoned the three wise men out of their distant country and led them to recognize and adore the King of heaven and earth. The obedience of the star calls us to imitate its humble service; to be servants, as best we can, of the grace that invites all men to find Christ. Dear friends, you must have the same zeal to be of help to one another; then, in the kingdom of God, to which faith and good works are the way, you will shine as children

3 of the light: through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with God the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen. Winter is making itself felt this year. I have made a decision concerning weekday Masses when the weather delivers snow and ice. Commencing Monday, January 8, we will follow school delays for the 7:30 a.m. Mass. Therefore, to be clear, if Danbury schools are delayed an hour, Mass will be celebrated at 8:30. If schools are delayed 90 minutes, Mass will be at 9 a.m. If schools are closed, we will have Mass at 9:00 a.m. My reasoning for this policy is this: we have a lot of sidewalks, parking lot, and stairs to clean and to make safe. I will not cancel weekday Masses except in those cases, like this past Thursday at noon, when the snow is falling hard and it is clearly unsafe and unwise to travel. If on a Saturday there is snow or ice, we will take an hour delay and have Mass at 8:30 a.m. THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD -Fr. Mecca YOUTH MINISTRY The Junior (Gr. 6-8) & Senior (Gr. 9-12) Youth Groups meet from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the St. Peter School Gym once a month. Junior YG (Friday nights) Senior YG (Wednesday nights). All Middle schoolers and high school teens are welcome to join at any time and are encouraged to come to the events on the YG calendar. This meeting is mandatory and attendance will be taken. Socks of Love Thank you to all the families and students who contributed to our sock collection. Over 145 pairs of socks were collected and distributed to those in need throughout Danbury. Your kindness and generosity was greatly appreciated. Birthright Needs You! -Birthright is a pregnancy service offering free pregnancy tests, friendship counseling, and practical support to women experiencing a crisis pregnancy. Our guiding principle: It is the RIGHT of every pregnant woman to give BIRTH and the RIGHT of every child to be BORN. Birthright has served in Connecticut since 1972 and has nine locations.
