I don t want to wish summer over, but the weeks sure do pass quickly. The committee had its first planning meeting at the start of this month and has a good handle on the details. We are building on the model started last year when we moved the picnic to the grounds of the Vespucci Lodge. The venue was well received, and so we are going back. The space is bigger, the pavilion provides more shelter and room to circulate, plus during the summer the club erects a good size tent for even more sitting. In addition, the lodge allows us to use the kitchen facilities in the pavilion. There are grills and refrigeration. Our parishioner, Tony Scalzo, whom many of you see passing the basket at the noon Mass, has been of great help again this year in making arrangements for us. Thank you Tony! Tickets will go on sale in August. At the present, we are seeking some more volunteers to help with the day. We especially need some men who would be able to set up and move tables and chairs and break them down and stack them at the end of the day so that they are ready to be picked up by the rental company. If you are willing to lend a hand for one time or the other, please call Kathy Corigliano, our picnic chairperson, at Thank you! Please remember that there is a second collection today. That is out of the ordinary for us, but this collection is the Co-Operative Mission Collection that was deferred from last week. We encounter this problem each year. Co- Operative Mission weekend is the third weekend of July in our diocese. Our conundrum is always do we change the envelopes in your packet so that the parking lot collection moves to the fourth weekend or keep it in place and contribute to the missions on the week following the missionary s visit. Thank you for your goodness in supporting the men and women gifted with the missionary spirit who live all over the world both preaching the Gospel and showing to the world s peoples the love that Jesus Christ and we his disciples have for them in their need. Summertime brings with it activity in the school. Besides the usual stripping and waxing of floors, the cleaning company is doing other cleaning jobs not possible when school is in session. The interest generated by the Kilby Trust has allowed us each year to perform additional needed upgrades. We ve done many floors, exterior doors, security measures, refrigerator, freezer, tablets, smart boards and other not so glamorous things like plumbing. With patience in a few more years we are going to have a very fine looking building once again. You recall that last year we dipped into the principle to renovate the six student bathrooms. This year we are not tackling anything quite as big. We are painting two classrooms and while we are giving them a facelift, we are covering the slate with white boards and cork. John Belanger and some student helpers are remodeling closet space. Some of the classrooms those without those marvelous walk-in coat rooms I knew from my old 1920s grammar school have closets with doors that pull

3 out. Some of them just don t always work anymore and, besides, all the hardware associated with them doesn t allow for maximum useable space. So, in some rooms, John is removing the doors, opening up the space, and remodeling the interior with coat hooks and shelves for garments, backpacks, and storage space. Back in the day when the school was designed no one carried backpacks. The teachers deal with where they can be placed during the day off the floor and out of the way. This remodeling is the solution. -Fr. Because we are such a beautifully diverse population, we are going to offer English speaking classes. If you would like to be a part of our program either teaching or learning, please call the Office after July 24. Also for adults we will offer parenting classes.
