We have six months of the Appeal it closes on June 30--and six months off. In order to introduce the 2017 Appeal, entitled Sharing God s Gifts, Transforming Lives, I will speak briefly today after Communion and play Bishop Caggiano s audio message. Because I am going to say only a few words from the pulpit, I thought I might elaborate here. The Annual Catholic Appeal may seem like an annual burden, but it is vital for the good of the Diocese and its ability to address urgent needs and build new ways to advance our mission as the Body of Jesus Christ in Fairfield County. Many essential ministries, programs, and agencies that deliver pastoral care and human service are funded by the Appeal. In the coming week or so you will receive through the mail literature that will list them all, but because I know that not all our parishioners are on the diocesan mailing list, let me highlight some of them. The Appeal funds our Church s charitable outreach to all people regardless of religion. That ministry is conducted through Catholic Charities which feeds the hungry and homebound, houses the homeless, and counsels individuals and families in need. The Appeal provides the salaries for priests, deacons, and sisters who provide pastoral care of the sick and elderly in nursing homes and hospitals, all dedicated individuals like our Fr. Paul Merry at the St. John Paul II Nursing Home. (2.1 million) The Appeal is the source of income that supports the Queen of the Clergy Home for retired priests and, at the other end of the spectrum, the discernment program at the John Fisher Seminary in Stamford. It also pays the seminarians tuition at the major seminaries and covers the cost of the deaconate formation program. (3.5 million) Many of our Catholic families who desire for their children an education which includes faith and morals need some tuition assistance in order to attend our schools. They are receiving aid from the Bishop s Scholarship Fund which receives funding from the Appeal. So, too, does the Catholic Academy in the City of Bridgeport which due to the poverty of the area requires subsidy. (2 million) The Offices of Catechesis and Evangelization offer young people, the future of our Church, opportunities to encounter Jesus. Their programs rely on the Appeal for funding. (1.4 million) Finally, the Appeal provides the means for social and pastoral services. The St. Catherine Center for Special Needs provides educational and pastoral services for people with developmental disabilities. One of our parishioners, Joanne LaPorta, is a teacher at St. Catherine Academy and is part of the wonderful education and training of the individuals served there. Initiatives that came out of the recent Synod to revitalize our Church, like the Catholic Service Corps and the Leadership Institute, receive money from the Appeal. (1.4 million)

3 You know that when we act together as one body united in the love of God we can accomplish a great deal. The Appeal really requires the participation of everybody. Naturally, everyone s financial situation is different. That is why I say over and over again that any gift to the Appeal is both appreciated and important. Giving $5, if that is all one can manage, is an act of solidarity with the Bishop and the Faithful in our parish and within the Diocese. I hope that all our parishioners in the three language communities will respond with a spirit of good will and help with the Appeal. Our parish goal is $120,000. -Fr. Music Notes 22 January 2017 When the bishops met at the Second Vatican Council, they declared that Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that fully conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. (SacrosanctumConcilium, 14) In order to facilitate a more active and fully conscious participation at Mass, we have begun preparing worship leaflets that outline the music that is sung at our liturgy. You are all encouraged to pick up these worship leaflets as you enter the church. They list the musical selections sung during Mass, and direct you to specific hymn numbers. You are encouraged to sing these hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs in order to better foster the active participation at Mass that the bishops envisioned. After Mass, How wonderful it is to be back at St. Peter's Church and School. The warm reception has been wonderful! In just a short time, starting January 29th, we will celebrate Catholic Schools Week. You are most welcome to come and visit Monday January 30th. Bishop Frank Caggiano will be visiting Saint Peter School to meet and greet our school parents. As you may know, all of our area schools have been holding meetings to plan for the future. Bishop Caggiano will be sharing our findings and plans as we prepare for School Year Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward. Candy bars will soon be on sale after all Masses. Saturday, February 11 at 2:30 p.m. - All, especially the sick, the frail and the handicapped are invited to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of Prayer for the Sick. Mass will be celebrated and the Sacrament of the Sick will be offered. Refreshments will follow. Welcome begins at 2:30 p.m. followed by Mass at 3:00 p.m. This event will take place at St. Aloysius Church, Cherry Street, New Canaan. Are you thinking about your New Year s Resolutions? You can make a difference in someone s life by sharing the gift of literacy. Literacy Volunteers on the Green is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides free instruction in English as a second language and basic reading and writing to adult English language learners and native English speakers who struggle with literacy in communities throughout Northern Fairfield and Litchfield counties. All of our tutors are volunteers who are trained by the organization and provided with instructional materials. Classes are usually one to one or with groups of fewer than five learners and both classes and materials are free for students. 2% of our students live in Danbury, and we have a long waiting list for Danbury tutors. Our next training session will be in January. The show features crèches from Germany as well as many from the museum s collection, including a hand-carved cedar nativity scene from Mexico and its popular 120 square foot Baroque Neopolitan (Italian) diorama. Birthright needs volunteers -Birthright is an emergency pregnancy service offering free pregnancy tests, friendship counseling, and practical support. Our guiding principle: It is the right of every pregnant woman to give birth and the right of every child to be born. Birthright was founded in 198 by Louise Summerhill, mother of seven, in Toronto, Canade. It has been available to pregnant women and their families in Connecticut since 1972 and has ten locations. We help any pregnant girl or woman who calls us. If you would like to help, please call for the Birthright nearest you. Training is provided. Thank you. Este es un término que, para los que llevamos algún tiempo en los caminos del Señor, nos da la impresión que no es para nosotros. Pertenecemos a la raza de los convertidos no? Pues, NO. Convertirnos es algo diario, porque cada día fallamos a la santidad a la que hemos sido llamados. Cada noche, cuando hacemos el repaso del día, nos damos cuenta de la cantidad de veces que hemos negado al Señor con nuestras acciones. Y cada mañana expresamos nuestro deseo de corregirnos y hacerlo mejor. Esa es la conversión diaria de la que no debemos escaparnos. Aunque solo con la gracia de Dios lo podremos logar.
