In the vestibule, the classes have set up some examples of things they have learned this year. A great deal of instruction goes on every weekend in the classrooms. The catechists guide the children through a broad curriculum, so I will find the children s responses quite interesting. Formation in the faith happens on Sundays and the instruction is important, but it is good to mention that our children spend much more time at home than in a classroom. That is why we always encourage parents to speak freely at home about faith, about love of God, about who God is. As with everything else, the family within the home is the most fertile religious education classroom for teaching and promoting growth and development. I hope our families encourage further learning and discussion of our faith, seizing the opportunities that arise just out of life s daily experiences. There are many times when the Gospel, when the real life of God can be brought to bear on what our children see and hear all around them. As the books are put away, we gear up for the celebration of the beautiful Sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation in May which is right around the corner. We will be celebrating the Sacraments for a large number of young people. We will say more about these liturgies next week. In the meantime, rehearsals begin this week. Pat has provided a list of our catechists and aids who have been instrumental in nurturing the faith for our young people. Please go down the list and when you have finished say a little prayer of thanksgiving to God for them and for the gift they made of themselves this year. We are indeed fortunate for having their service to the parish. I personally thank them and Pat for carrying on this most important ministry. Our Parish Task Force for Pastoral Planning met for a second time on Thursday. At our first meeting during Easter week, we began our conversation and set as our goal for this week completion of our self-evaluation. The selfassessment is broken down into four categories pastoral and sacramental life, financial condition, buildings and facilities, and community. The Task Force thought about the questions and formulated responses. We brought all of that input together on Thursday. We now need to synthesize it a bit more, and once we do, submit the response to the members of the parish and finance councils and staff for review. These steps must be completed by May 15 when the selfassessment is submitted to the Office of Strategic & Pastoral Planning. Then, we begin drafting our particular goals for our pastoral plan. We will have the entire months of June-August to undertake that stage. I am so very grateful to the Task Force for devoting serious thought to the process. They are doing us a tremendous favor. Thank them when you see them. -Fr. Mecca
