We offer our condolences to the families of Judy Collins who passed away last week DANBURY, CT This weekend is quite unique. When December 25 th is a Monday, we have a complicated set of circumstances. We have the celebration of the Fourth Sunday of Advent in the morning and within the short period of three hours, Christmas arrives! It is a huge challenge to manipulate the schedule in order to squeeze in everybody and everything in our parish which has Sunday Masses going on all day to accommodate our multi-lingual community. We came up with the best possible solutions as we think we could. Decorating for Christmas, too, presented us with a challenge. Normally, our team decorates on the morning of Christmas Eve, but that was not possible this time. We decorated on Saturday, but tried to save a hint of Advent where we could and hold off the full impact of Christmas until you walk into church Sunday evening. Once again, our parishioners in the true spirit of giving, responded in an enormous fashion to the requests from the community. We had 478 angels on our angel tree. Maybe a dozen remained after the first weekend, and these last ones were picked up the following week. It is too bad that you cannot see the array of gifts laid out before they are picked up. It is quite a sight! So much colorful wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons. It s beautiful. Your goodness and love are equally beautiful. The gifts are representative of your love for our sisters and brothers whom we do not see but who are part of the human family and need the things of life. The two women of the parish who coordinate with the agencies and see to the details of the angel tree like to go unmentioned, but this year I want to acknowledge our two hardworking staff people, Carol Lemoine and Mary Schlichtig, for their dedication to this annual tradition of sharing God s love. Over the course of the last two weeks, we distributed church calendars to parishioners. It is so Catholic to have one with the days color coordinated with the liturgical color of the day, and, of course, those fish on the Fridays of Lent. With a Catholic calendar, you always know when Ash Wednesday and the holy days are and when to abstain and fast. With a Catholic calendar, you can reflect on the saint of a particular day. The calendars are a gift from the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home. I thank Dan Jowdy for keeping this valued piece of Catholic identity alive for us. Tonight is Christmas Eve! There is something very different about this evening. Without a doubt, it is special. I encourage you to play some carols, not the secular songs, and listen. Some of the most beautiful music and lyrics have been inspired by Christmas, and not surprisingly. What is more beautiful than God departing heaven to become one of us without losing his divine identity to show us true love and to bring us into everlasting love. As the organ swells this evening may your heart, too, swell, and may you exuberantly sing, Yeah, Lord we greet Thee, Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing. Merry Christmas! -Fr. Mecca

3 FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT/CHRISTMAS Bless our preparations for the Christmas season. May we reflect on why we celebrate, On the joy we seek, and On the fullness of life and peace We all long for, The birth we wait for. May the images of that tiny babe Remind us of the center of things, Where each human being Is an honored child of God, With His given dignity. May the lights of the season Open us to that spark which moves us To authentic community and solidarity: Sisters and brothers all. May the music of Christmas Move us in deeper ways To participation in the chorus That proclaims our shared joys, Shared concerns, shared hopes. May the trees and green boughs Remind us of God s Creation, Which is our only home, Our future, our common theme. May we find time to say a prayer for friends and relatives We honor with gifts. May we find time to pray and to be generous To those in need in our communities So we may honor our broader ties. Bless the signs of celebration around our homes, Bless our longing for peace and compassion, Bless this human family As we honor the fragile child Who calls us all His own.
