Father Mecca Please remember St. Peter Parish when preparing your will. A legacy to the church eases your tax burden and helps continue the good works of our parish. WE WELCOME THE NEWLY BAPTIZED Peter Van Eyck BANNS OF MARRIAGE Paulo Melo and Flavia Gimenes Alex Jean and Veronique Landry-Doucet Nicholas Rebeiro and Rachel Holfelder Franz Lapeine and Nadia Virgile KINDLY REMEMBER THE SICK OF THE PARISH Richard Botelho Marie Carroll Nubia Dekker Vincent Keilt y Jack Maher Teddy Marchione Dylan McBeth Christopher McLaughlin John Palinkas DANBURY, CT Many, if not all, of you recall last month listening at Mass to a summary of both spiritual and administrative responses which Bishop Caggiano proposed to undertake in order to heal and to restore confidence among the Faithful within the Diocese relating to clergy sexual abuse. On the spiritual side, he asked us to pray the Prayer to St. Michael for his heavenly aid to root out sin and evil from our midst and to offer a Mass of Reparation for sin. The Bishop celebrated a Mass of Reparation three weeks ago at the cathedral and asked each parish to do the same. Our Mass of Reparation is scheduled for October 22. Because there has been a failure in leadership and because the Faithful want real change, Bishop Caggiano said he would make the Diocese more transparent and accountable to them. On the administrative side, Bishop Caggiano informed us of his plan to have an Accountability Investigation. This past week, the Bishop announced that he has followed through on this response. The Diocese has hired retired Connecticut Superior Court Judge Robert Holzberg, who is a partner in the law firm of Pullman & Comley of Hartfored and Bridgeport, to serve as counsel and lead investigator for the investigation. Judge Holzberg, a non-catholic and resident of Middletown, will head a team of attorneys and investigators in a comprehensive analysis and review of claims of clerical sexual abuse of minors, the Diocese s knowledge of such abuse and its response to allegations and information presented to it concerning the alleged clergy abuse. Judge Holzberg will have complete and unrestricted access to all Diocesan files, records and archives dating from founding of the Diocese in 1953 to the present. He will also be given the opportunity to interview clergy and administrators with information relevant to his inquiry. The results of the investigation are expected to be completed in the spring and presented in a public report. In the press release, our bishop states, I believe that the Church is facing a moment of crisis that demands honesty and repentance from the bishops and decisive action to ensure that these failures will never happen again. I think we are all very pleased with this measure. In his September letter, the Bishop also spoke of his commitment to present a financial report on settlement amounts for past claims. That report will include the sources from which funds were obtained to settle claims. It is being prepared and will be released on October 31. I can provide you with a short update on the parish hall since the flood. The sheet rock has been cut away at 2 feet above the floor so that the there is no chance of mold growing. The floor has been sanitized and the air is being filtered. We had the hall back in use by Wednesday. All the regularly scheduled meetings and uses can go forward. Bob Botelho of our parish is working with us to repair the damage once the adjuster has done his part. -Fr. Mecca

Music Notes: Ave Maria October is the month of the Holy Rosary. At Mass this weekend, our cantors will be singing the Ave Maria. Many of us, of course, are very familiar with the Ave Maria composed by Franz Schubert. Indeed, Schubert s setting has become a staple at funerals and weddings. Schubert s Ave Maria, however, is only one of many musical settings of the Hail Mary. Believe it or not, I found one website that listed over 4000 musical compositions of the Ave Maria! Some composers even composed more than one setting of the Ave Maria. This weekend, our cantors will be singing two settings of the Ave Maria composed by French romantic composer, Gabriel Fauré. At the Sunday 10:30 Mass, Jilian and Ashley will sing a duet version of the Ave Maria (Opus 93); at our other Masses, our new cantor, Wes Marchena will sing a setting for solo voice (Opus 67). I am most delighted to welcome Wes as cantor and section leader in our parish choir. Please feel free to come forward after our Masses this weekend and welcome Wes to our community! -Glen Segger, Music Minister Mass of Reparation will be celebrated at Saint Peter Church on Monday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. Let us stand with the victims of abuse and accompany them with our prayers and resources to find healing and peace. October 13, the anniversary of Our Lady s last apparition in Fatima, the Rosary will be prayed in front of Our Lady s statue on the Rectory Lawn at noon. In case of inclement weather, we will pray in the church. Please join in praying for America! Bingo Kitchen -is in need of some additional helpers on Wednesday evenings. The time is flexible.
