We welcome to our parish Sister Helen Roberts of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, New York. Sister Helen has been a Franciscan Sister since 1956, serving in elementary education and pastoral ministry for 62 years. Presently, Sister ministers to the sick and homebound and assists with the mission appeals for the St. Elizabeth Mission Society. The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany were established in 1859 to respond to the needs of children and young women in Allegany, but within 20 years they had broadened their scope to Jamaica. In doing so, they made history as the first congregation of American Sisters to establish a foreign mission. The St. Elizabeth Mission Society was formed in 1947 by Rev. Mother Jean Marie Greeley with the aim of bringing the mission work of the Sisters closer to the American people. The Society supports the ministry of the Sisters serving the poor in Jamaica, Brazil, Bolivia, and here in the United States. We welcome Sister Helen who will speak at all the Masses in place of the homily. By now you all know the challenge we face on Mission Cooperative Sunday. There is supposed to be a second collection today to support the missions, but because the third weekend is dedicated to the parking lot collection, we take up the collection for the missions next weekend. We tried once to switch the collections, but that was more troublesome than helpful. If you want to support the missions but will not be at Mass here next weekend due to summer travel, you can hand Sister Helen your donation on the way out of Mass or turn it in later in the month. We typically wait two weeks before we cut the check to send to the Diocese so that we capture all donations. I have failed for weeks to mention that Danbury Hospital is involved in revamping its system of informing religious congregations that they have members hospitalized. We were informed that while the improvements were worked out there would be an interruption in service. The hospital s us a notice when a parishioner has been admitted if the person has provided his/her place of worship. We would only receive an when someone is listed. The new system will us every day. If the page is blank, there is no one admitted. We were told that for a while all we would receive is a blank while the conversion takes place. It s been several weeks now that the is blank. It could be that everyone is healthy (thank you, Lord) or that the changeover has not been completed. I think it is a good idea to call us if a family member is in the hospital and you would like me or Fr. Riley to visit because I am not at all certain the notification system is working. While we are on the subject of the sick, for our bulletin, we have decided to keep the names of those who are ill listed for a month. Sometimes names have remained for so long that we forget who the people are and whether they continue to need the prayers. We ask that those who request prayers tell us whether or not to keep them on the list. -Fr. Mecca

3 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME We offer our condolences to the family of Constance Jennings Lorinda Venancio who passed away last week. ***SAINT PETER SCHOOL NEWS*** Box Tops for Education -Thank you for continuing to clip box tops from the many brands which participate in the program. We recently collected your donations from the blue box in the Church vestibule. There are a lot of them! Wonderful! We should tell you that the Labels for Education program was ended. A few Campbell soup cans may still have the label, but there is now no need to bring in the soup labels. (Progresso brand, however, participates in Box Tops!) Likewise, the Yoplait rewards program is over. Proceeds from the Box Tops will be used this year for sports. Again, thank you! The Diocese of Bridgeport is interested in hiring an educator to teach 3 and 4 year old students in an after school enrichment pre-school program based at St. Peter School. Activities will be provided for student work. Some time will also be spent assisting students and parent during cooperative activities. This is a late afternoon into evening program consisting of three consecutive days for one week in the late summer and various six week sessions within the usual school year schedule.
