I did not have the space to talk about it last week as I devoted this space to the new religious education year and to our program. Today I want to highlight the raffle. The raffle is our second most important fundraiser. Bingo, of course, is the first. The raffle annually nets us around $22,000 which is pretty significant and has the potential to earn us even more if we could only persuade a greater number of registered and non-registered parishioners alike to support it by buying or selling tickets. We don t have exact figures, but based on the annual census, we estimate that between the three language groups we have close to 2,000 families. If half of all of us were to sell a book, we could do a whole lot more for the upkeep of our buildings. The raffle revenue is used exclusively for the improvement of our church and rectory because the need has been persistent. In the past, raffle proceeds allowed us to replace the pew cushions and kneeler pads, clean and polish the marble floors, install the current handicap lift, finance a portion of the church air conditioning, replace the one clerestory window, and, last year, replace the rotted wood of the rectory balcony and porch. We are now relying on the raffle to pay for the replacement of the rectory roof so that we can curtail the structural damage from water seepage. As you know, we sprung some leaks and so we replaced one half of it this summer. Next year we need to complete the job. Last week we put out only the envelopes for parishioners who are registered. This week we have as well blank envelopes for our non-registered parishioners to take. Please sign out for the envelope on the control form next to the tray. State regulations require that with gambling every book of tickets that leaves the premises has to be accounted for. If you believe that you should have an envelope with a pre-printed label and do not, please call Carol in our office so that she can look into the reason. We tinkered again with the prize structure. We raised the amount of the first prize so that it would be even more attractive. Certainly, a taking a chance to win $5,000 at a cost of $5 is pretty reasonable. I am sure that family members, friends, co-workers would be very willing to buy a ticket so carry the book with you as you go to functions with family and friends between now and Thanksgiving. I thank everyone who is participating in this important fundraiser, and I encourage those who have not in the past to join us this time around. Our Parish Life Committee is presenting a Cabaret Night on Saturday, October 14. We will once again give the parish hall a night club atmosphere. The DJ comes highly recommended. He will play some of the great hits familiar to us all for listening and dancing. Let me stress the dancing. The evening is not about raising money as it is about being with others to enjoy music, dance, and conversation. We are supplying all the set-ups, ice, and

Sing with Understanding: Holy, Holy, Holy In 325 AD, the Church Fathers met in the town of Nicaea to formulate a consensus of belief. The resulting document, the Nicaean Creed, was passed on through the ages as one of the pillars of church doctrine, and continues to be recited (and sometimes even sung) at Mass to this very day. It was the Nicaean Creed that inspired Reginald Heber to compose the words to our Entrance Hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy, a majestic hymn of praise to the Triune God. The words of this hymn evoke a sense of awe at the majesty of God, and call on all of creation - human, saints and angels, and all living things - to give praise and honor to the Holy Trinity. -Glen Segger, Music Minister Confirmation Meeting -(please note date change) - Saturday, October 21 at 10:30 a.m. Parish Hall. This is a mandatory parent meeting to register your child for Confirmation and to receive information and dates pertaining to all the requirements. Upcoming Events -Palace View Rosary: Every first Friday of each month St. Peter Religious Education Students are requested to come to Palace View, 132 Main Street, Danbury to the recite the Rosary with the folks who live there. This is one of the Works of Mercy in our parish and students can earn a service hour for participation. Our next meeting is October 6 at 4:00 pm. If you can join us please sign up on the board outside of the Religious Education Office. Wreath Sale -The annual Christmas Wreath Sale will begin October 22. We need help with bows, assembly, and sales. This is one of the Works of Mercy in our parish and students can earn service hours for participation. ***SAINT PETER SCHOOL NEWS*** "Glory and Praise to our God!" Our prayers have been answered! We have secured a teacher for Spanish. She will teach Grades 5 8 three times per week for this semester. Remaining grades may be added for our second semester. You can imagine how delighted all of us feel at this news! Friday Masses are proving to be joyful events as more and more of our students are responding orally in prayer and song. Added to our school is the joy of volunteers who come and assist our children one-on-one or in small groups, whatever the need. We have two gentlemen, a Religious sister, a retired teacher, and a part-time nurse. How blessed we are! The invitation remains open. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the normative way in which non- Catholics those un-baptized as well as those baptized into other Christian denominations enter the Church. It is also the way baptized Catholics who never received any catechesis and didn t receive Eucharist and Confirmation complete their Sacraments of Initiation. The Inquiry Period begins on September 28 when we will begin weekly Thursday evening sessions for those who want to explore the process.
