2 Faith as a witness So Joshua said to the people, You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord for yourselves, to serve Him. And they said, We are witnesses. Joshua 24:22 In Joshua s final days on the earth, he calls all the children of Israel together and makes one final speech to them. In this sermon, he issues that great challenge to the Israelites, Choose you this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, (24:15). The children of Israel answered resoundingly, We will serve the LORD! (v. 21). In so doing, they freely chose to enter into a relationship with the Lord. After looking at the blessings God offered and the perils of being opposed to God, they decided to follow Him. They were free moral agents who made their own decision to do everything the Lord had asked of them. That decision that day was a witness to their faith. It testified that they had chosen to give their lives to the Lord. If they were to back out on their commitment later, their decision before Joshua that day would stand as a witness against them. They had chosen to serve the Lord. The same is true of Christians today. We have freely chosen to repent of our sins, confess our faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and be immersed in baptism for the forgiveness of our sins. The Lord added us to Your place for weekly news and updates! Wow!! What an amazing day we had last week! We had one of the largest crowds we ve ever had for our February Friends and Family Day! I love that we were able to put our heart of kindness on display and I saw so many of you reaching out to our guests. One of the neatest things I saw Sunday morning was also the most confusing. Most of us have the places we normally sit in the auditorium but Sunday you were hard pressed to find anyone in their usual seats! We had so many guests and so many of you moved to make room that it was a giant fruit basket turnover effect! Thank you to everyone who made Sunday a big, special day for us! Our Heart of Kindness will continue to be on display every time we get together and we will continue to grow in our kindness and how we display it, but Sunday was a wonderful time together. I love you and I am so blessed to be your minister. God is good and His people are some of the best people in the world! Thanks also to Juan Nunez for organizing the Men s Breakfast yesterday and to everyone who cooked for it. I m thankful to be part of an active and caring family of God s people! -David Salisbury His church, but He didn t do so against our will! We chose to commit to living the Christian life. And that moment of decision is a witness to our faith. The day you are baptized will always be a special day because it is the day you chose to begin your life as a Christian. Should you ever choose to break that promise and leave your faith, the day of your baptism will stand as a witness against you. Becoming a Christian is a free choice that you must make; even God will not force you to live according to His will. But when you make that choice, you make a promise to the Lord that you will be His forever. It is a sacred vow. Thankfully, God is patient, gracious, and merciful with our failings, just as He was with Israel. What He wants from us is for us to live lives that are committed to Him and to follow his plan for us. Then we are witnesses for Him to a world that needs to come to saving faith. Our lives of faithfulness are a testimony to God s faithfulness. May we all be good witnesses for the gospel of Christ! -David 2 Corinthians 5:9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

Jesus response is found in Matthew 4:10. He says, Be gone, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve. This verse (among others) teaches that worship is something that should only be given to Jehovah, God (i.e. the God of Christianity) and not to anyone else. Likewise, John 4:23-24 reads, 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Here, Jesus teaches us that worship is an intentional act that we do for God and it must be done in a specific way (in spirit and truth). This means that we must have the right heart/attitude of worship and the right method(s) of worship that are in line with His truth. Neither of these verses, however, teach us why we worship or what worship itself really is or looks like. They just teach us that we should do it and do it right. As a result,it is very important that we look to God s word (as individuals and a church body) in order come to personal understanding(s) of the whats and whys of worship in Christianity. This is nothing but sadness of the heart. Then I was very much afraid. Review from Ezra and Nehemiah: Chapter one of Nehemiah teaches us how to show godly sorrow for the sins/struggles of our life. Chapter two teaches us that fear is not an excuse that should keep us from doing God s will! In 2:2 (seen above), Nehemiah is clearly afraid to tell the king what is on his mind, but in the next verses he does so anyway. This results in him being allowed to go to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls. Because he overcame his fear, the will of God was accomplished. Challenge: Don t let fear get in the way of God s will in your life.

To be a Christian is often described as being in Christ. When do I move from being outside of Christ to being in Him? Scripture shows us over and over that individuals who believed in God and repented of their sins were baptized. Paul says that baptism is the moment we put on Christ. The word describes putting on a coat or robe. To be in Christ, I must put Him on and that happens at the moment I am baptized.
