2 Your place for weekly news and updates! Thank you to everyone who came to our midweek services on Tuesday night. What we do in the middle of the week is such an important part of the life of our church family and I was glad to see us all come together on a week when there were more than the usual number of distractions and scheduling conflicts. The body of Christ is important and we need each other! Our time together is refreshing and energizing. Our hearts were broken this week at the passing of Rochelle Tapp and our prayers are with her mother Linda Johnson and her uncle Robert Dixon and all her family. Her son Bryce has been a regular visitor in our youth group, too. Please keep the family in your prayers. I'll miss being with you all this week as I head to camp this afternoon. Once again we are taking a good group of 8-10 year olds from Henderson this week and I am excited to be a Bible class teacher. In addition to working this week of camp, I am also privileged to serve on the board of directors for the camp. This congregation has such a great history of working at WKYC and I'm glad to see that continue with another generation. -David Salisbury Rescue Me The LORD is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalms 34:18 (NASB) The world has been fixated on the rescue efforts going on in Thailand to save 12 boys and their coach who are trapped deep in an underground cave. They hiked in but were trapped by rising water. Now they are in stuck in a small area a mile and half from the entrance. It takes professional cave divers six hours to get to them. The boys were in the cave for nine days before rescuers could reach them. Now they are trying to figure out how to get the boys out safely. Our prayers are certainly with the boys and their families and professionals working to bring them to safety. It's hard to imagine what it must have been like for them as they got cut off from the entrance to the cave and driven deep inside it. Then to wait and wonder if anyone would find them for nine days must have been agonizing! One of the first thing the rescuers did after finding the boys was set up a rotation among the divers so that someone is always with them. The divers bring necessary supplies and equipment with each trip, but they also spend time just making sure the team is not alone any longer. While the team is thankful for the supplies and company, what they really want is to be rescued and certainly the hopes and prayers of the world are they will be saved from this situation very soon. As I heard the news about the rescue efforts, I was reminded of what David says about God in Psalm 34. When we face hard times and it feels like we are cut off from hope and driven deep into a cave of despair, God is near to us. In those moments when we feel so alone, He promises to be with us. But more than that, when our spirit is crushed and we don't think we can carry on, He will save us. He rescues us! Not only does He come to us in our darkest moments, He walks with us through the very valley of the shadow of death. What an amazing God! But how does that really work? When I am in my dark moments, how is it that God will be near me and rescue me? It is through His presence in the world today. We, the church, are tasked with doing the work of God each and every day. So if the Lord is near the brokenhearted, guess where His people should be? Right there with Him, near to those whose hearts have been broken. And if the Lord walks with them through their tragedy, then we must be His hands and feet and go with them, too! -David 2 Corinthians 5:9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
3 The next Summer Devo is TONIGHT at the Tapps. Bible Image of the week Also, SYS is at Seven Oaks Church of Christ on Tuesday. Those going will leave at 4:30 and get back around 11:00. Please take one for your family. There are events for the elements as well as the youth group. for the welfare of the individual. Obviously, the individual who pronounces judgment upon another, when he is personally guilty of [similar] transgressions, is not genuine in his censures. Many of the Jews were of this hypocritical nature. While they condemned the gross wickedness of the pagans, they practiced identical breaches of fidelity (see Rom. 2:1-3). "Does this imply that one must be sinless before he can declare a judgment concerning another s conduct? It does not. Paul was not sinless (Rom. 7:14ff; 1 Cor. 9:27; Phil. 3:12ff), yet he did not hesitate to judge the flagrant fornicator who was disgracing the Corinthian church (1 Cor. 5:3). The person who presumes to judge, however, must be a truly spiritual person (cf. 1 Jn. 1:7), with the good of others genuinely in view (cf. Gal. 6:1). Don't forget about doing all things in love as well (1 Cor. 16:14). On another occasion, the Lord warned the Jews: Judge not according to appearance? (Jn. 7:24)...Superficial judging is condemned. To judge someone, strictly on the basis of race, cultural background, unsubstantiated rumor, appearance, financial standing, etc., is wrong (cf. Lk. 10:25ff; 15:1ff; Gal. 2:11ff; Jas. 2:1ff). In his sermon at Caesarea, Peter declared that God is no respecter of persons. The Greek term denotes an opinion formed on the basis of the face, i.e., appearance. The Lord does not do that (cf. 1 Sam. 16:7), and neither should we." - Wayne Jackson. Excerpt from "Don't Judge Me!" ChristianCourier.com. *What's in green was added or edited by Nathan. Jesus told His disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel. Mark s account of the Great Commission summarizes the gospel this way: He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. When Peter preached the first gospel sermon he taught that repentance & baptism went hand in hand. Here, Mark shows us that faith & baptism go together in the same way. Faith is obedient!
