2 Deck the Halls - Bah Humbug! And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10-11 This season of the year has lots of heroes. In addition to the obvious choice of the jolly old elf himself, we cheer for Rudolph as he overcomes his personal obstacles to save Christmas. We love Frosty and how he enjoys the time he has and makes the most of it. But perhaps two of the greatest heroes of this season are known more for the changes in their personality than anything else. Charles Dickens and Dr. Seuss have both made a lot of money off the idea that there s just something wrong with being a grumpy grouch during the holidays. Ebenezer Scrooge and the Grinch both find true Christmas joy before their stories end. They aren t the first to discover it, though. As Christians, we sing Joy to the World and O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant. And lost among all the fa la la la la la is the truth that this tis the season to be jolly. At the birth of Jesus the angel said this was good news of great joy. The word great is the Greek word mega. This is REALLY good news for the whole world! And yet, especially at this time of year, it often feels more like the season of mega stress and exhaustion instead of a time of joy and peace! What can we do to keep joy in our hearts, not just in December, but all year? Your place for weekly news and updates! Today, we welcome our youth group back from their winter retreat. Nathan has done such a great job planning and preparing for this event and I can t wait to hear the stories the kids will tell when they get back. Thanks to all the chaperones and cooks who went to help out, too. We were blessed to have guests from the Washington Avenue and Oak Hill congregations join us, as well. Thanks also to Brad Carter for overseeing our Cookies for Angels program again this year. What a great way to make a positive impression on so many in our community! Another way we impact our community is through our Adopt a Family program, too. Please continue to give generously so that we make Christmas special for a family in need. There are so many opportunities for service, fellowship, and worship together! This past week we said goodbye to one of our oldest members. Joyce Booth took every opportunity to encourage others and share the love of the Lord with them. She was always so loving and welcoming to her church family and to our guests. She will be missed, but her ministry carries on in the lives of those us she touched! Praise the Lord for her faithful example! -David Salisbury Worry will steal your joy faster than anything. Corrie Ten Boom said Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, it empties today of its strength. It s hard to be joyful when you re stressed out. Practice giving your worries to God and trusting Him with your stresses. Refuse to focus on what you DON T have. This season is filled with ads and catalogs that tell us we need more stuff. Proverbs 14:30 reminds us that envy rots the bones. The Grinch learned a valuable lesson when he discovered that Christmas doesn t come from a store. Christmas means so much more. The same is true for our joy. Make some time to rest in all the busy-ness. Job 9:25 says My days are swifter than a runner. They fly away without a glimpse of joy. Slow down and enjoy the people and moments of this time. Schedule some time for rest in with all the other parties and events. During this time of year, may our joy shine even more brightly so that those around us can see the difference that Jesus had made in our lives! -David 2 Corinthians 5:9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

Adopt-a-Family Shopping - Dec. 17 HYG Christmas Party - Dec. 20 Adopt-a-Family Ministry: Each year we take up money so that we can help buy gifts for children of families in need. We are taking this money up now in every classroom! In Luke 15, Jesus presents three different parables that all have one thing in common. They all revolve around something (or someone) that is lost. Parable one is about a lost sheep, parable two is about a lost coin, and parable three is about a lost son. This weekend we have discussed each of these parables and have thought about how each example was lost (and also how we can help each type of lost person). For instance, the lost sheep knew it was lost, but had no clue how to get home. It needed someone to go out and lead it back. In the same way, there are many people who know they are lost, but need someone to help show them how to be found. They need to be shown the path to God. The lost coin on the other hand had no idea it was lost (since it was a coin). This represents the people who don t realize they are lost and must first be shown where they are. Then, they can be guided down the proper road. Lastly, the lost son is shown as someone who knows he is lost and also knows the way home. Jesus tells a group of religious elites that the only way they can be saved is to repent of their sins. He wasn t picking on them, He just wanted them to understand that no one is good enough to be right with God on their own merits. When we come to know God s will and we see where we have fallen short of it, we must change our life accordingly. Repentance is bringing my life in line with God s will for how His people should live.
