2 Thank you for being here today! Many families will celebrate Easter today by enjoying family meals and maybe even an egg hunt or some baskets of goodies. Thank you to Mary McIndoo for heading up our church egg hunt yesterday. While I love the candy and chocolate that accompany this holiday, I m glad we worship God first as we do every Lord s Day. This past week we said some goodbyes. We bid farewell to the Fletcher family. While they won t complete their move to North Carolina until after school is done, Laken has already moved and started working there. Josh has relinquished his duties as a deacon to help him focus on all the things that go along with moving, too. We wish them the best in their new home and are thankful for their service here. Yesterday, we also stood with the family of our sister Magdalene Shelton as we celebrated her life of faith and mourned her passing. We are blessed by her faithful example and she will be greatly missed. -David Salisbury Gospel facts vs Gospel power Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily. Colossians 1:28-29 Who was the first person recorded in Scripture to have the gospel shared with him/her by another person? If the gospel is the good news that Jesus has risen from the dead, then Jesus himself is the first person to hear the gospel! In Luke 24, two disciples are walking to the town of Emmaus when they are joined by a stranger. They tell him all about the events of the past weekend. They tell him that Jesus of Nazareth was a mighty prophet and their own leaders conspired to have Him killed. They even tell him that the tomb was empty and angels declared He was alive again. But Jesus makes it clear that even though they knew the facts of the resurrection, they didn t actually believe it. Their own words reflect their lack of faith - We were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel, (21). We were hoping, but now we re not hoping anymore. They knew gospel facts, but Your place for weekly news and updates! there was no gospel power in the news they shared because there was no gospel power in their faith. But then they discover that the stranger to whom they were speaking is none other than the risen Savior Himself! Jesus was the first person to hear the gospel proclaimed, but it isn t until He makes it personal for these disciples that they say Did not our hearts burn within us? (32). Now they felt the power of the gospel! They got up immediately, even though it was late at night, and hurried back to Jerusalem and told the assembled apostles about the good news of the resurrection of Jesus. And this time, it was powerful! While they are telling the story, Jesus appears in their midst and calls them all to be His witnesses. When you live the Christian life, do you just have the facts of the gospel, or do you live it with the power of faith? -David 2 Corinthians 5:9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
