2 Not So Easy, But Worth It! Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matthew 7:13-14 Where did we get this idea that the Christian life is an easy one? Somewhere along the way, we have believed that all we have to do is generally be a good person and God will bless us and the Christian life will be a breeze to live. I don t know who first preached that easy gospel, but it wasn t Jesus! Jesus promises us that the Christian walk will be hard. As He taught His disciples, He told them, Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows, (John 16:33, NLT). What was true for them will be true for us as His followers today. We may not face the open, life threatening persecution they did, but it s still hard work to live like Jesus. The Christian life is not a miserable life at all, but neither is it an easy life. The Christian life is a life that is lived on purpose. You must decide to do the right thing, say the right thing, think the right thing. And frequently it requires great discipline. You must do things that go against what you want to do at the moment. At the moment of temptation, sin is always easier than righteousness. But don t be fooled! In the long run, the Christian life is a far better decision than following the path of sin. When you look at life from an eternal perspective, it Your place for weekly news and updates! This weekend is the beginning of Fall Break for our Henderson, Union, and Webster County school kids and faculty. We certainly wish safe journeys to all those traveling. Please remember that the work of the church goes on here while you are away! I m thankful for all those who teach in our education program or help us in our worship services. You do a good job getting those obligations covered when you are away. Thank you to Josh Fletcher for leading singing for us tonight and to Scott Schue for teaching my class Wednesday night. Don t forget to continue giving to the church, as well. We give as we are prospered, not as we are able to attend. You can give a week ahead or double up when you get back, but please remember your support of the church in your giving as well as in your prayers. Lastly, don t leave Jesus at home when you head out on vacation! Take your faith with you and look for opportunities to share the good news where ever you go. Our Friends and Family day is in two weeks and we ll have a special preview lesson next Sunday morning as we prepare for our big day! Make plans to be here and bring some guests! -David Salisbury becomes easier to follow God and do the right thing, but you still must decide to do it. Developing good habits doesn t happen overnight or by accident. Instead, it takes a long progression of making good decisions and repenting when making bad ones. It is a dedication and commitment to becoming more like Jesus that leads to godly habits. If doing the right thing were easy then everyone would do it. While we certainly wish that were so, Jesus warns us that many will not make good decisions. They will choose the wide and easy road that is traveled by the crowds. Not many will walk the narrow, difficult path. It is up to us to make sure we are part of the few who follow righteousness. Decide now that you are going to do the right thing when faced with temptation. And make a conscious effort to develop spiritual habits and work at them, no matter how long it takes. Spend time in prayer and Bible reading each day. Make coming to worship and Bible class a habit. Give sacrificially. Don t give up on the Christian life just because it isn t easy! Stick with it because the rewards are worth all the hard -David work! 2 Corinthians 5:9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

Becoming a Christian is just the first step in a life long journey of discipleship. Paul says that living the Christian life is like running a race and the end of our life is the finish line of the race. In Revelation 2:10 Jesus promises a crown of life to His followers who are faithful throughout their life. It doesn t mean we re perfect, but it does require us to be faithful. Don t quit on the Lord! He has promised to be faithful and asks us to do the same.
