2 What Doesn't Belong Abstain from every form of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 Six year old Isaak Lasson just couldn't seem to get well. For three years he kept a sinus infection and had trouble breathing. His parents knew something was wrong. Doctor after doctor checked him out; he took numerous rounds of antibiotics, but nothing seemed to help. Finally, one doctor was looking up his nose and noticed something out of place. He asked Isaak what it could be. "I put some spaghetti up there once, but that was a long time ago," Isaak replied. A trip to a specialist revealed he actually had a fairly large Lego piece wedged in his nose! Following surgery, Isaak is breathing and sleeping better and isn't sick nearly as often. We may laugh at what children will put up their nose, but it could have been serious for Isaak. And what is humorous but dangerous for a child is downright foolish for an adult! We may not stick Legos or spaghetti up our nose, but we are certainly capable of putting some dumb stuff into our life. It's not hard to fill your life with lottery tickets, tobacco, raunchy humor, or media that glorifies a sinful, godless lifestyle. It's not too difficult to be a negative and demeaning person who always notices the problems and flaws in any idea or Your place for weekly news and updates! I'm always so thankful for our church family here! We are blessed with so many people who give in so many different ways. Some of you give of your talents to lead us in public ways in our worship services and we are grateful for your service. Some of you are talented in ways that allow you to serve more "behind the scenes" and we are grateful for all you do, as well! It takes at least 75 people working together each week to pull off a normal week for us. If we have a Wednesday meal or any other special event, that number quickly climbs to almost 100. And that just covers our Sunday and Wednesday assemblies! I pray we will always seek to be a family of God that loves, cares for, and serves each other as we should. Continue to remember our students as they are back in school. Whether it is college, high school, middle school or grade school, they face a different environment than most of us had when we were in school. Theirs is a unique mission field and they need our prayers as they seek to live out their faith and also share it with others. Pray for their boldness and their wisdom as they seek to be lights in a place that desperately needs it! -David Salisbury work. It's fairly simple to build your life around having the latest, greatest stuff and going into a pile of debt. All these things will make your spiritual life more difficult. Sin comes with a price, but so does foolishness. Some things are wrong for any Christian at any time to engage in. When we find sin in our lives, we should get it out immediately. Any sin will make us spiritually sick and sap our energy for the Lord. Some things may not be sinful by their nature, but they set us up to be weak. They are foolish things and should be avoided, too. If you want to live your Christian life well and run the race with perseverance, watch what you put in your life! It really does make a difference! If you find yourself struggling spiritually, take a look at what you're putting into your body, soul, and mind and see if you need to improve your mental diet. We would all benefit from more time spent in prayer and Bible study. And if you discover something lodged in your life that doesn't belong, get it out! -David 2 Corinthians 5:9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
3 Challenge of the Week: Carry your Bible around ALL day at school and when you get a chance open it up and read it. (Remember, do not do these challenges in a showy or condescending way) Bible Image of the week B Questions or Suggestions? Nathan Woolard - Youth and Family Minister nathan@hcofc.com or (919) Sunday Funday - Aug 26 Teen Week Retreat - Sept FHU Rush - Sept HYG Devo - Oct 6 Pistol Pete Maravich Approximately 20,000 hours (between ages 5 and 17) playing ball. Holds nearly every single college scoring record. Averaged 44.2 points per game (without the 3-point line). NBA Hall of Fame. Be sure to sign up for the remind groups below that apply to your family and text your name to (919) What made Pistol Pete so good at basketball? "Well, obviously he had talent. He was 6'5" so that helps, right? So he had the natural talent, he had a passion for basketball. But he didn't just have natural talent and he didn't just have passion. He didn't just say, 'Well, I'm Pistol Pete. I'm 6 foot 5 and I'm passionate about basketball.' No, He spent time with the basketball. 20,000 hours between the ages of 5-17!!! You do a little math on that: Do you realize that over the course of 13 years he would've had to play basketball EVERY SINGLE DAY for over 4 hours to do that! That's crazy!...maybe it's time we take our time seriously." (Excerpt from Philip Jenkins' "Purple Gorilla" Class Material, Mount Juliet Church of Christ/A.I.M.) Thought from Nathan: Now, let me ask you a question. Do you want to be a good Christian? The kind of Christian God wants you to be? The kind of Christian that stands out like a purple gorilla? I hope so! Let me ask you another question. Have you been devoting yourself to the word of God? Pistol Pete devoted himself to the game of basketball in order to be good at basketball. Are we devoting ourselves to the word of God in order to know how to be good at this life? Psalm 119:97 reads, "Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day." Is this how we view the Bible? If we want to be as good as we can be then we need to be willing to put forth the work. And remember, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." If we are spending more time, effort, money, etc. on things of this world than on things of God then where is our heart? Attention ALL Youth: Remind is used a lot, so be sure to sign up for any of the reminders that apply to you. If you don't then you will not know what is going on. Also, parents please make sure you are a part of the correct groups as well (as seen to the left). Youth Group - to Sr. High - to Jr. High - to 81010

Confession that leads to salvation means to publicly confess your faith in Christ as the Son of God. In Romans 10:10, Paul says that we believe with our heart and we confess with our mouth and both are required for salvation. In other words, belief alone is not enough. If I believe with all my heart, but do nothing about it, then I have stopped short of God s plan. I must go public with my faith and tell others I believe in Christ!
