2 Adding dord to your Bible study All scripture is given by inspiration of God... 2 Tim 3:16a...holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21b As a poor deprived child who grew up before the advent of the Internet, when I wanted to know what a word meant, I only had two choices. I could ask my parents or look it up in a dictionary. And because I was a quick learner and my parents were famous for sending me to look up any word I asked them about, I soon learned to just go straight to the dictionary. For those too young to remember, an unabridged dictionary was a gigantic book that claimed to contain the definition of every word in the English language. It also made a great door stop and it did an good job of pressing four leaf clovers, but that s another story. Merriam-Webster provided the final authority on how a word was spelled and to be used in a sentence. And yet, in 1934 the 3rd edition of Merriam Webster s unabridged dictionary contained a reference for the word dord meaning density. For five years it was listed in Webster s until someone realized it wasn t really a word. A slip of paper was submitted by a chemistry editor that said D or d. density to have density added to the list of words the letter D could represent. Somehow the letters were run together and instead a new was created: dord. Your place for weekly news and updates! What a fantastic Friends and Family Day we enjoyed last week! Thank you for the food you brought for our meal. Thank you to those of you who had to sit in a different place to eat your meal because we overflowed our basement. It was a beautiful day with 255 souls here for Sunday morning and we had a response at the afternoon service, as well. While we had guests from all over the United States (I met people from Montana, Ohio and California!) I was especially excited to see how many of our guests were local. We pray these contacts will develop into opportunities for us to share the gospel and reach out more into our community. As we reflect on our local efforts to grow the kingdom of God, it s a great day to have Spencer Broome with us to talk about some international work to teach the gospel and grow the kingdom. The work the Forrest Park congregation is doing is exemplary and life changing and I m glad we have a chance to be a part of it! -David Salisbury It might be a bit surprising to find out that Webster s dictionary could contain an error. And yet, the power of Webster s is such that once they included it, it became a real word. They created a word. Perhaps even more amazing is that five years later they removed its status as a real word. As disconcerting as it may be to think about errors in the dictionary, isn t it comforting to know that God never looks down at the Scriptures and says, Wait a minute! How did THAT get in there? There are no updates or corrections to the inspired text of the Bible. The Word of God is infallible! What great confidence that can give us when we read the promises of God! We can know that they are guaranteed by the Creator of the Universe who cannot lie! It is God s inspiration of the Scriptures that makes them profitable for the Christian life. Because God is faithful, His Word is faithful. And because of that faithful Word, I can depend on what I read and put it into practice in my Christian life knowing it won t change later on. While dord may not be a word, even though it appeared in the dictionary for a short time, The Word of God will stand for all eternity and can be trusted fully! -David 2 Corinthians 5:9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
