2 From the pastor's desk: Back in 2002, the author and commentator on all things Catholic, George Weigel referred to the "Long Lent the Church was enduring at that time, owing to reports of the sexual abuse of children and young people by members of the clergy. It was, of course, devastating for the victims. It was also difficult time to be a Catholic in this country, and still more difficult to be a priest, for the sins, crimes, and failings of many were laid bare for all the world to see. This summer there have been more revelations, mostly from the East Coast, with those concerning former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick have been particularly grievous and embarrassing. There is soon to be released a comprehensive account of abuse from several dioceses in Pennsylvania over the last fifty-plus years; these promise to make tragic reading. These revelations bring up many questions; beginning with How could this happen? There are no easy answers. Any experienced law enforcement officer or social worker can tell you that sins and crimes frequently have complex origins. In dealing with these events, I believe the Church has made a good start. The child protection courses that all clergy and lay staff and volunteers must take have brought practical means of recognition and prevention to the forefront of our consciousness. There are more problems to be solved; primarily they involve developing mechanisms of accountability and reliable prevention. I noted, way back in 2002, that this was an open wound that will need to drain for a long time before it is healed. The only good news I have to offer on this front is that the great majority of these cases are historical, having occurred anywhere between sixty and thirty years ago. This would indicate that the preventative steps that the Church has instituted are having their due effect. Finally, I ask you to pray; for the Church, her people, and her ministers. We live in a world beset by sin and trouble, and anywhere there are human beings, there are going to problems both great and small. But as St. Paul reminds us, where sin has abounded, there grace has abounded all the more. Our faith is in Jesus Christ, not in any particular representative of His Church. However angry and disappointed we may be at these moral failures, we must always turn to the Lord to grant us His grace. He asked us to reflect on the role the Catholic faith plays in our lives, the spiritual growth required to become a better disciple of Christ and the steps we need to take to get there. He posed a number of requests for us to consider as we take those next steps in our spiritual development and bringing others to know Christ's love. Those requests were: Spend time in quiet prayer each day welcoming Jesus more fully into your life. Ask yourself daily: To whom is Christ calling me to bring his love, mercy, forgiveness and hope? Prayerfully ask the Hoy Spirit to guide your actions. Join your parish community each Sunday for Mass, and consider preparing for Mass by reflecting on the Sunday readings. Families could do this together. You can find the Mass readings at the U.S. Catholic Bishops website. ( Be a missionary disciple of Jesus in your family, workplace, neighborhood and parish community. Thank God for all the blessings in your life. Ask yourself: How am I being called to serve as Christ served? And where can I find Christ in each person I encounter today? I'm hopeful all of us take an opportunity to truly reflect on these.

4 Classes begin in 4 weeks. It is so hard to believe. We have quite a few new students and catechists. It will be fun to get to knoe everyone. As of today, the following classes are closed. First Grade, Third Grade First Year, Third Grade Second Year, Fifth Grade First Year, Sixth Grade. We will be taking names for the waiting list and be able to let you know by mid-october of any openings. Our last catechist meeting will be Monday, August 20th at 6:30 in the school. We will meet there to see the classrooms, storage closets and discuss the best way t bring the children into the classroom on the first day. I would like all teachers to attend to get their classroom lists and double check the boxes. If you cannot attend, please Miss Holli at holli@stphil.com. If you would like to take an opportunity to speak with me one on one, please me and we can schedule a time. This is always possible in the school year. Do you have any old teacher manuals for "Alive in Christ"? Please return to the parish office to help save expenses on purchasing new teacher manuals. As always, there is room for more catechists. Please consider sharing your gift of faith. Confirmation The Confirmation retreat this past Saturday was awesome. We all got to know each other better and learn more about the journey we are taking towards the Sacrament of Confirmation next February. Do you feel a piece of you is missing? Do you feel joy in the your life? I know the answer to happiness, joy and wisdom. It comes from a personal relationship with Jesus. It comes from knowing that Jesus died for me over 2000 years ago and He never met me face to face. Come and learn, open your heart to His love and mercy. Pre-Baptism Classes English Baptism classes are normally offered the 2nd and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 7:00pm to 8:30pm in the Upper Conference Room in the Parish Office. 5 For all St. Philomena School families, we are having our Meet and Greet on Monday, Aug. 27th from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. This is a chance for you and your child to meet your child's teacher, bring in their school supplies and get acclimated with the classroom. This is an open-house style event, students do not wear their uniforms and they stay with their parents. You can come for as little or as long as you want. There is no Kids' Club offered on this day. Student Council will be here to help. The first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 27 th. Parishioners would you like to volunteer at the school?? We are looking for volunteers to help work in the lunchroom, in the classrooms, at recess. It is simple: First all volunteers, especially new parents, need to make sure they have taken the Safe Environment class called, Protecting God's Children for Adults, if you want to volunteer at school. Deacon Jerry will be offering a class on Tuesday, Sept. 11th at 6:30 PM in the parish hall. You need to register through the Archdiocese of Seattle at virtus/reg There are other places that offer the class which you can take during the summer, just check the Virtus website. Secondly, contact the school and we can help you get involved. If you would like to work in the lunchroom then you will need a food handler's card. The class is online and costs $ The school will reimburse the cost of the class for you if you provide us with the receipt. This is an excellent way to meet new people and have fun getting to know the students. The school works in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus to put on this great event. There will be a Polka mass starting at 5:30 PM with music provided by Andy Mirkovich, followed by a wonderful dinner. It is truly an amazing evening of fun!! St. Philomena Parish Youth Ministry Dr. Steve Morissette- Youth Minister For all students in 6 th -9 th grade The St. Philomena Parish Youth Group is an opportunity for students in 6 th through 9 th grade to get together on a Sunday afternoon. The mission of our Youth Group is to provide the students with various events and activities that strengthen and deepen their relationship with God and with their peers. There is also an emphasis on service and the commitment to help others. We meet usually twice a month on Sundays from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Youth Group is for any St. Philomena Parish student in 6 th through 9 th grade.
