2 In the bulletin today you will find a reprint of the Washington State Bishops letter on poverty. I hope that you will take the time to read it, and perhaps find a way to do your part. On the local level, our St. Vincent de Paul Society and the St. Martin de Porres homeless men s shelter in Seattle do an incalculable amount of good. They are always in need of financial assistance and volunteers. As my mother used to say, If you can help, you should help. In the next several weeks I will be enclosing the National Bishops Conference statement on Refugees and our duty as Christians to welcome and assist them. Blessings! Safe Environment for Children Touching Safety This February 27 or March 6, 2017, St. Philomena Faith Formation Program will offer one sexual abuse prevention course to your child. In our efforts to protect our vulnerable population, the Archdiocese of Seattle has integrated abuse prevention material into our faith formation curriculum in the context of teaching our children about our Catholic faith. In creating a safe space for our children, we can teach and show them the ways of Christ in a safe environment conducive to learning. Keeping our minors and vulnerable adult s safe starts with you. We ask that you take part in this effort in extending the Archbishop s effort to help evangelize our children in a safe space. To help you understand what your child will be offered, we ask you to visit: faithformation.aspx. This will provide you with Parent/ Guardian Resources, to inform you about the curriculum being used while also making available the actual lessons. As the guardian, you have the right to opt your child out of this lesson. You may do so by clicking on the link Opting Out. You will need to fill out this form with your Catechetical Leader. This announcement is to notify you of our new initiative to provide abuse prevention curriculum to our children in the Faith Formation program. 4 ARE YOU WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS? Religious Education/Faith Formation You should have seen it!!! We had lambs flying all over the place. So many children knew their prayers and were happy to recite them. My offer of an additional prize still holds for the Guardian Angel Prayer. Let's see how well you can do!!! As you have probably read in the bulletin, we are mandated by the Archdiocese to offer a Touching Safety Program to all children enrolled in the Religious Education Classes. This week we will send home an overview of the program and an opportunity to opt out your child from the class. The purpose of the class is by teaching the students the vocabulary, establishing boundaries and determining good touch from bad touch. This is not about a sex education class but rather empowering the students to speak up for themselves by learning to say no and report the incident. As the parent or guardian you have the right to sit in on the class and observe or choose to have your child opt out from the class. There is a form for you to opt out. If you do not opt out, your child will be included in the class. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Isabel or myself. Mr. Mark and Mr. Jose ganged up on me and now we have a special treat to offer to all students in our program. If you learn all of the 9 main prayers and the 4 facts, you will receive a ticket to attend the Root Beer Float Party on April 24th after class is over. Everyone has 3 months to learn the prayers in the back of your religion book to qualify, so let's getting prayin'!! RCIC/RCIA: We have finished up prayer and are beginning to talk about morality and end of life issues. Remember to mark February 21st as a class not to be missed because Brian and Kari Steadman will be speaking on marriage. We will be going to St. James Cathedral on Monday March 6th for the Rite of Election. Please notify Miss Holli if you plan to come. 2/5/17 Page 4 Women s Bible Study News Our next session is starting this week, February 9, and we invite you to join us. We will be offering the brand new course, Follow Me: The Gospel of John beginning on February 9 th. This class will run for 8 weeks and will conclude on March 30 th. Each class lasts for about an hour and consists of a video presentation lasting about 30 minutes and a group discussion. Participants will need a workbook, which will be available for purchase at the first class for about $16. Our class meets on Thursdays from 7-8 pm in the upstairs conference room of the parish office. This course will take us through the life of Christ as seen through the Gospel of John and will teach us how we can follow Christ as His disciples in our modern world. We invite you to join us this spring! Our schedule for this session is: February 9, 16, 23, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Confirmation We have one class left on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 2:30pm. The candidates will have the opportunity to go to Reconciliation on that day. Confirmation rehearsal is Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 6:30pm. This is mandatory for all Confirmation candidates. It is highly recommended that their sponsors also attend. This helps them to know what to expect. The rehearsal usually lasts about an hour. Confirmation Mass is Friday, February 24, 2017 at 7:00pm. All candidates need to be in the hall with their sponsors no later than 6:45pm. Bishop Elizondo will be presiding at the mass. The mass will last about two hours. Right after the mass there will be a group photo in the church with the bishop. PRE-BAPTISM CLASSES Holy Mother Church strongly encourages parents to have their babies baptized within the first few weeks of life. The baptism preparation classes are normally offered the 2nd and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the Upper Conference Room in the parish office. The next classes will be on February 8th and 15th at 7:00pm. Parents and godparents are required to attend.

5 This year s 2017 Distinguished Graduate Award recipients are two very well deserving graduates. Congratulations to Marlys Hunt and Tyler Evans on being named this year s Distinguished Graduates. Marlys Hunt has been teaching at St. Philomena School for the past three years. She graduated from St. Philomena School in 2004, attended Holy Names Academy and then earned a B.A, in music from Santa Clara University. Marlys teaches music and middle school math, leads two choirs, assists in the 2nd grade classroom and is the school s liturgical coordinator. When asked why she wanted to come back to St. Philomena Marlys stated, I wanted to come back because of the community. When I returned, it definitely felt as if I never left. Tyler is currently in his first year teaching at St. Philomena School teaching 5th grade. He attended St. Philomena School from kindergarten through the 8th grade. He went to Kennedy High School, earned a B.A. from Western Washington and earned his Master s degree from Western Governors University. Tyler did his student teaching last year in 4th grade at St. Philomena School with his favorite St. Phil teacher, Teri O Connor. Tyler wanted to teach at St. Philomena School because, St. Philomena School played a huge role in who I am today, and I wanted to return the favor and some of the same positive impact on future students. Congratulations Marlys and Tyler!! Two very well deserving graduates whose Catholic education was instrumental in forming the people they are today. They also represent the many St. Philomena School alumni who have become educators and more importantly those who have become Catholic educators! ****************************** Registration for the School year is now open! The event will be held at the parish hall. Tickets are Castillos Supermarkets Original Mexican Food-to to-go th Ave. SW /5/17 Page 5 $35.00 per couple and $20 per person which includes homemade spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, and dessert. Wine and beer will be available by donation. Water and coffee are complimentary. There will be games before dinner. After dinner, dance the night away with music provided by our resident DJ, Brian Steadman. This evening is for those 21 years and older. Proceeds from this dinner benefit the St. Philomena School Marilyn Byers Alumni Fund, which helps alumni families attend St. Philomena School and help with the Robert Ruth Memorial Scholarship. Come enjoy this wonderful evening as we continue to celebrate St. Philomena School. St. Philomena Parish Youth Ministry For all students in 6 th -12 th grade Is your 6 th -12 th grader looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon? Why not have them attend Youth Group. Youth Group meets about twice a month form 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday afternoons. There is no cost and it is a great way for the youth in our parish to learn more about their faith, have some fun and help others. Why not give it a try! The Youth Group will be greeters at the 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM Masses on Sunday, Feb. 5 th and will also be hosting coffee and donuts in the hall after the Masses. We hope you stop by grab a donut and some coffee!! The next Youth Group session will be Sunday, Feb. 26 th from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, come and have some fun!!
