2 Confirmation Parents, I sent home the off-site retreat permission slip (January 12-14, 2018) along with a letter explaining what is expected of your candidate, location and times etc. This retreat is MANDATORY in order for your child to receive the sacrament. Parent Meeting 6:30 pm RE/RCIC School The Outreach Program is collecting new and warm clothing items and food for the following programs: St. Martin de Porres Shelter for Men is in need of new hats, warm gloves and scarves, and light-weight fleece blankets. St. Martin de Porres is also in need of donations of new bath towels. Pregnancy Aid provides for our local families in need. They are in need of new winter coats, pajamas, toys, children s books, and especially diapers. They are open 10:00am 1:00pm, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Des Moines Food Bank: Donations of non-perishable food items are greatly needed this season at the Des Moines Food Bank. 4 December 4th, is our last class for Classes will resume on January 8th, Christmas vacation is a perfect time to learn prayers and attend Mass, especially if you are making your First Communion in April. You can learn a lot by watching Father's words and actions as he prepares us to receive Jesus' Body and Blood in the Eucharist. First Reconciliation is completed and everyone did great. If you missed the communal First Reconciliation services, you must make an appointment with Fr. Steve or Fr. Gilberto to receive the Sacrament before Lent begins. Our last class for the year 2017: we will be discussing Sin. Christmas time can stir many emotions and memories. If this special season speaks to you about your faith, please consider it a New Year's resolution to join us as we explore our faith and come to a deeper understanding and relationship with Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You are welcome to join us at any time. No reservation needed. Because we have cancelled class for December 11th, we encourage the students to attend the festivities for Our Lady of Guadalupe beginning at 7:00 pm. Look for Señora Isabel or any of the teachers to get your very special hologram holy card featuring our Lady of Guadalupe with a special prayer for Mary, our Mother, in Spanish. Holy Mother Church strongly encourages parents to have their babies baptized within the first few weeks of life. The baptism preparation classes are normally offered the 2nd and 3rd Wednesdays of the month from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the Upper Conference Room in the Parish Office. Next classes: January 10th (English) Febrero 3 (Español) Parents and godparents are required to attend.

5 Starting Tuesday, Dec. 5th, St. Philomena School is having a birthday party for baby Jesus. Each year St. Philomena School conducts a birthday party for baby Jesus in which we collect baby items for Pregnancy Aid. Pregnancy Aid is a service agency located right here in our Des Moines community. Their mission is to help pregnant women or young mothers. We are working together as a school to help them during this Advent season. The drive starts Dec. 5th and runs through Dec. 12th. Each class is asked to bring in a specific item. We are also asking the parishioners to help out too, just chose any item from the class list and place it in the outreach box in the church. This is a great way to extend the true meaning of Advent to those in need. Birthday for Baby Jesus for Pregnancy Aid (Dec. 7th- 13th, 2016) PreK & K- baby booties and socks 1st- baby blankets 2nd- baby clothes (sizes 0-24 months) 3rd- diapers/ointment (sizes 0-24 months) 4th- baby formula 5th- onesies (sizes 0-24 months) 6th- baby hats and mittens 7th- baby bibs 8th- baby food Faculty & Staff- baby shampoo, lotion and oil Want to help out those in need during the upcoming holidays? Why not consider taking part of SC with Heart? Many families in the St. Philomena School and Parish are struggling to make ends meet. As hard as it is for some of us to imagine, we have families who receive food stamps, use the Food Bank as a source for feeding their families and live in subsidized housing. You can bring hope to these families and make a difference in their lives, by giving to SC with HEART. When you are buying SC, please consider buying an extra gift card for groceries or gas that will be distributed to these families anonymously. All purchases go into the SC with HEART account and are distributed equally to those families in need. Please have a HEART!! St. Philomena Parish Youth Ministry Dr. Steve Morissette- Youth Minister For all students in 6 th -9 th grade The St. Philomena Parish Youth Group is an opportunity for students in 6 th through 9 th grade to get together on a Sunday afternoon. The mission of our Youth Group is to provide the students with various events and activities that strengthen and deepen their relationship with God and with their peers. There is also an emphasis on service and the commitment to help others. We meet usually twice a month on Sundays from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Youth Group is for any St. Philomena Parish student in 6 th through 9 th grade. Please join us on Sunday, Dec. 10 th for Youth Group at 3:00 PM in the Parish! We will be having our Advent/ Christmas celebration. Please take an ornament from the Giving Tree that is set up in church and purchase the item on the ornament. Please return the unwrapped items to the boxes underneath the tree. The items will be donated to Toys for Tots, Pregnancy Aide, the St. Martin s men s shelter and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Giving Tree Project runs through Friday, Dec. 15 th. Thank you for your generosity!! WEEKLY COLLECTION RECAP Our budget is based on an expectation of $839, in collection donations for the fiscal year (July 17-June 18).
