2 FROM THE PASTOR August 21st: Twenty-First Sunday In Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, Our Food Pantry re-opened this past week, after giving its volunteers a few-weeks summer break. In the past, the Food Bank of New York continued deliveries to pantries during such breaks, so we could build up inventory for the post-summer influx of clients. This year, probably due to cutbacks, deliveries were suspended during the break, so our inventory is low. Please remember our Pantry when shopping: dry/canned, non-perishable food can be left at the rear of the church (behind the last pews) or at the rectory, during office hours. Also, this month we can use the donation of school supplies (pens, notebooks, etc.) for the children in our client-families. Thank you. This is a good opportunity to remind you that we do not accept used clothing for distribution here. This is per directives of the Food Bank of New York that provides the bulk of the food we distribute. For health safety, they don't want clothing stored or distributed where there is a Food Pantry. Food is a more urgent concern, so pleased don t deliver or leave clothing here it can be dropped off nearby at Goodwill on Van Dam Street, or even at the new bins in the Mobil station across the street. Thanks for understanding this (a few seem to refuse to do so!). This week we take our Altar Servers on a day-trip, treating them to lunch, a surprise or two, and then a musical show. They are a great bunch of young people, and we appreciate their ministry. Related: thanks to the three Altar-Server Moms (Luz, Inés and Margarita) who recently laundered the servers albs. We appreciate that kindness. One of our Altar Servers, Gavin Dela Cruz Mirza, got great news this past week. After being accepted into and participating in the special REACH summer program (both in Pennsylvania and New York) sponsored by Regis High School, Gavin, who is only entering the 7th grade, was accepted into Regis High School when his time comes. This is total four-year scholarship to one of the top high schools in New York City. His parents, Abigail & John, and grandparents, Delia & Joe, and entire family are justifiably proud of this accomplishment. Congratulations, Gavin! We put out the word at this time that we are inviting teenagers and adults who never made one or more of the Initiation sacraments (Baptism and/or Confirmation and/or First Communion) to contact us so we can help you complete your membership in the Catholic Church through these sacraments. The prep program is offered in English or in Spanish. Spread the word to those you know and have them contact the rectory ( ) for more info or to follow up. Our Golden Age Bingo Club resumes its weekly meetings (Wednesdays at noon) starting September 7th. New members are always welcome. Finally, thanks to all our parishioners who carry their share in maintaining the church airconditioning during the dog days of summer. The church Con-Ed bills during the summer total thousands of dollars. $50 per family is requested for A.C., and deeply appreciated. Stop by the rectory during weekday office hours to reregister. New Students need to fill out a PINK registration form (available in the rectory), attach a COPY of the child s BAPTISM Certificate and pay the registration fee ($75 for 1 child; $100 for 2 children of same parent; $110 for 3 or more children). If the child is not baptized, you need to send a COPY of their Birth Certificate. Sr. Christine will need to meet NEW families. She will be in touch with you to arrange this appointment, usually on Wednesday or Thursday from 2pm on. 1. Catholic Charities has outpatient behavioral health clinics, to deal with crisis and trauma therapy and to offer individual, group and family counseling. The nearest branch is in Jackson Heights. Phone There is a discounted taxi service to local medical, dental and clinic appointments provided by the Catherine Sheridan Senior Center. It is for people age 60 and older who have difficulty taking public transportation and reside in Sunnyside and Woodside.
