2 December 3rd: First Sunday of Advent FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Advent rolls in very quickly this weekend, as evidenced by the purple vesture and the Advent Wreath in church. Yesterday, our Spanish-speaking parishioners had an Advent retreat to set the tone of the next few weeks. Today we distribute the familiar, well-liked Little Blue Books for your daily spiritual reflection during this season. Copies are available in English or Spanish. This coming Friday is a holyday honoring the Blessed Mother as the Immaculate Conception. She is a person intrinsic to the dynamic of Advent. This coming Saturday, we hold our parish liturgy of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas. It is always a moving and prayerful celebration, even for those who do not speak or understand Spanish. The introductory message and dance at 6 pm, followed by the Mariachi Mass at 7 pm, followed by a colorful and energetic entertainment program in Michael Brennan Hall, are all deeply energizing elements of a great tribute to the Mother of Jesus. If you ve never attended, you should -you will be delighted and spiritually uplifted by it all. Some of our parishioners will join the Guadalupe carrera (torch run) from St. Joseph s Co- Cathedral in Brooklyn to St. Raphael s on the feast itself, which is Tuesday, December 12th. Because Christmas falls on a Monday this year, the Church Decorating event will be on a Saturday afternoon. See the details elsewhere in this bulletin. Speaking of decorating, Christmas Flowers are available to honor living persons or to memorialize deceased loved ones. Again, see more info elsewhere in this bulletin. Use the envelope in your parish packet extras are available at the rear of the church. Two notes not specific to Advent per se, but worth mentioning. You may see publicity in the media about a national collection for Retired Religious scheduled for December 10th, but see no corresponding envelope in your packet of support envelopes. The reason is our printing company misdated that collection several months ago and we took it up then at the English and Spanish Masses and sent it in. (It s always good news to hear about no second collection!). Also: we recently received several memorial donations to our Food Pantry in honor of recent deceased persons. It is the true story of a man who lived courageously with mental illness and transformed Sister Ave s own life through his humility, simplicity and quiet perseverance. ADVENT DAILY REFLECTIONS At Masses this weekend, we distribute the Little Blue Book (English or Spanish edition). It contains a six-minute daily Advent and Christmas season meditation, this year based on the Infancy Narrative of St. Matthew s Gospel. It s an easy doorway to everyday prayer and a systematic way to allow God to speak His word to you.

Our assigned goal is $37,183, with $35,453 pledged, but only $29,897 paid as of this past week. Please follow through with your commitment to this initiative which supports several important ministries, and complete your pledge as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation. Because Christmas falls on a Monday this year, our decoration of the church will take place on Saturday, December 23rd, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Please note date and time, and join us to lend a hand.
