2 October 8th: Twenty-Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, We continued a rolling series of tragedies this past week, with the mass shooting in Las Vegas. Each additional cataclysm has a habit of making us forget the impact and desperate situation of those impacted by the previous disaster. In this context, Bishop DiMarzio is urging a diocesan drive to collect material goods for those in dire straits in Puerto Rico. Material goods, because Jet Blue Airlines has generously agreed to airlift these items directly to Puerto Rico. Time is of the essence here. For those parishioners whose s we had on file, we sent out a blast about this last Tuesday, asking them to bring some items to church this Sunday. To the others, we ask you to do your part and respond, within the next two or three days, by dropping something off at the rectory office. Please note that no clothing of any type will be accepted. The need is for the following items: bottled water, water-purifying tablets; non perishable/canned food (rice, beans); baby food and formula; baby and adult diapers; flashlights and batteries; first-aid supplies; personal hygiene products; and sanitizers/cleaning products. Once we have the items, Catholic Charities will arrange for shipping by Jet Blue. The immediate, small efforts of many can add up to bring significant relief to the Puerto Rican people in this painful time. Please join in this humanitarian action now. Compassion fatigue is defined as a tempting indifference to charitable appeals on behalf of suffering people, because of the number and frequency of such appeals. Please don t succumb. Dare we also mention that the ushers will be holding the baskets after Masses next weekend for the victims of the recent Mexican earthquakes? This weekend at Masses we begin the CALLED BY NAME initiative to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life in our diocese. More info forthcoming. 5. Thanks to all who made our last Flea Market of the season a success last Sunday. Even without prepared food available, we netted $1516 for the parish. Good job, all! FAMILY MASS CHOIR F We are ready to start for St. Raphael's Family Mass Choir and we need your talents. The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael's parish. Children in grades 2 and above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be interested in having any high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday's a month at 7:00pm and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow. The only requirements are that you attend practice and Mass, and behave appropriately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist on the singing, who may play a musical instrument or who are willing to help with other support functions, such as transportation. If you are interested please take a form at back of the church and return it to the parish rectory, to Sister Christine at the Religious Education Program, Joe Becker or Jan Wnek after Mass. Pictured above is the late Nancy Pease, for whom we celebrated Funeral Rites last Sunday evening. Nancy was a longtime member of our 11 am Mass choir, and a gifted teacher who impacted a countless number of children in her career. Nancy was mowed down a few weeks ago by an inebriated driver as she participated in the World Bike Tour in Brooklyn. She died on Sept. 22nd. Please pray for her husband, Jonathan, and sons, Chris and Daniel, as they try to move forward after this tragic loss.

If you would like to participate, speak with Ines or Angelina or Margarita after Sunday Mass ANNOUNCED MASS BOOK is now opened in the rectory office. Arrangements to have these Mass offered specifically for persons living or deceased, or for special intentions, may be made by visiting the rectory office on weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm (lunch closing from 1 to 2 pm). The Announced Mass offering is $15.

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH After skin cancer, it s the most common form of cancer in women. It s not just a women s concern: about 2,740 cases of breast cancer will be detected in men this year. A woman in the U.S. has a one in eight chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Mammograms save lives. Early diagnosis and treatment can mean a much better prognosis. St. Raphael s Food Pantry thanks Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens for the recent $2,000 grant to be used for the purchase of fresh produce for our Pantry clients.
