2 November 4th: Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, At the 11 am and 12:30 pm Masses this Sunday, we pay tribute to the 42 persons buried through the services of St. Raphael s during the past twelve months. Some were Funeral Masses here in church; others were Prayer Vigils at a funeral home; still others were gravesite services in the cemetery. We will have a reading of the name s of the deceased, toll a bell in honor of each, and light memorial candles marked with their names. Two parish events last weekend got us into the November spirit of All Saints/All Souls. A week ago Friday, our Vino Nuevo Apostolate organized a Holy Hour, in Spanish, for children and their families. Several children came dressed as favorite saints and some shared a fact or two about that saint. The prayer service ended with an illustrated object-lesson and a special blessing of the children. Pizza, hot dogs and other refreshments followed. A couple of pictures of the event are on the Spanish-language page of this bulletin. Last Sunday, our folkloric Dance Troupe, Manhatitlan, ran a Kermes based on the theme of the Day of the Dead. This cherished Mexican tradition, with its skulls and skeletons, is far from macabre or mournful. It is rather a genuine celebration of life by laughing in the face of death. Below are a few photos, including the altar adorned, among other items, with personal possessions of beloved deceased persons visual reminders of intimate bonds not broken with their passing. By the way, the raffle prize of the Apple iwatch was won by Rosario Gutierrez (ticket # 078). It was edifying to see the secular, overblown celebration of Halloween replaced by these two parish events more in keeping with our faith traditions. 4 Choir Seeking New Members Our St. Raphael Adult Choir has started up again following the summer break. We are looking for new members in all voice categories: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. If you have sung, hummed or whistled in the bathtub or shower at some time, consider joining us! See or call our music minister Jan ( ) for a private hearing. We promise you the security of social fellowship with other choir members and increased satisfaction and joy in the service of God! ANNOUNCED MASS BOOK FOR 2019 (January through December) IS NOW OPEN AT THE RECTORY. Arrangements to have these Masses offered for your particular intentions can now be made at the rectory during weekday office hours. The Announced Mass offering is $15.

As Catholics we firmly believe that God has a plan for our lives! He calls some to marriage, some to the priesthood, and others to religious life. Some remain as generous single people. Fully living our own vocation and teaching young people how to discern God s call is a serious duty, but also a joyful one. Today begins National Vocations Awareness Week. During this week please pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young people in your life children, grandchildren, students, friends to be open if God calls them to the priesthood or religious life. NOTES 1. Banns of Marriage are announced for the November 17, 2018 wedding, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Riverhead, of Siobhain Minarovich and Nicholas Fusco, both of St. Raphaels. 2. Bishop Di Marzio and bishops nationwide are joining in seven days of prayer and fasting prior to their general assembly in November, where they will make critical decisions regarding the tragedy of clergy abuse. A letter with more details is posted on the vestibule bulletin board. Please pray for the healing of support of all victims of clergy sexual abuse; for the conversion and repentance of perpetrators and concealers of sexual abuse; and for the strength of the bishops to be holy shepherds in protecting and leading our flocks from all harm. 3. Welcome to our new altars servers: Nayely Velesaca and Mateo Castro. Girls and boys (4th grade and up) who have made their First Communion are invited to participate in this ministry. 4. Our Food Pantry is readying for its Thanksgiving distribution. Dry, packaged foods and cash donations are sought to help with this special outreach. No turkeys can be accepted. Items can be brought to the rectory office or church (baskets behind last pew). Our bilingual Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be at 9:00 am. 5. United Forties Civic Association meets this Thursday, Nov. 8th, 7 pm, at St. Teresa s Parish Center (44th St. off 50th Ave.) in Woodside.

Also, to Green Valley Marketplace for its recent contribution of $100. FAMILY MASS CHOIR INVITE We are ready to start a new year for St. Raphael s Family Mass Choir and we need your talents. The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael s parish. Children in grades 2 and above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be interested in having adults and high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday s a month at 7:30PM and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve, and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow. The only requirements are that you attend practice and Mass and behave appropriately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist in the singing, who may play a musical instrument or who are willing to help with other support functions, such as transportation.
