2 October 2nd: Twenty-Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Weather permitting, we end our current Flea Market season this Sunday. Thanks to all who make this project an ongoing fundraising initiative for St. Raphael s. We started our Religious Education (Faith Formation) program for children last weekend. We welcomed back the girls and boys, as well as the catechists (teachers) and assistants. We gifted each of the teachers, at last Sunday s English and Spanish Mass rededication blessings, with an Angel-Food cake, in connection with our parish s angel-patron feast day this past Thursday. Like angels, who are messengers, they are to be carrier s of God s Word to those young ones in their care. We all signed a get-well card for religious-education director Sister Christine, who is recovering, at her community s Long Island convent, from hip surgery in August. A drug interaction sent her back to the hospital for a bit, but her rehabilitation continues. She s making progress walking with a cane, but the next step is climbing stairs (she lives two-flights up in her Brooklyn convent!). We hope to see her back here in a few weeks. Thanks to her assistant, Kathleen Viscup, for pinchhitting in the clerical tasks associated with the program. As we form boys and girls in the faith, we do likewise for those beyond the childhood years. Our Spanish Bible Study resumes this coming week (Tuesdays at 7:30 pm in Michael Brennan Hall) under the leadership of Elizabeth Ciro. This season the topic of study will be the so-called Catholic (universal) epistles (James, 1 & 2 Peter, 1,2, & 3 John, Judas), plus the Book of Revelation. Each participant will receive a copy of the Liguori study-guide. Moreover, Bogar Casiano, a lay pastoral minister here, is forming a group of teens and adults who missed childhood sacraments (Baptism and/or First Communion and/or Confirmation) and need to prepare to receive them. At this point, this process will be done in Spanish. Contact the rectory immediately if you are in this situation. Finally, our Golden Age Bingo Group will holding off meeting for a bit until the club president, Joan Mary Jackowski, recovers a bit more after her recent fall. Will keep you posted. Don t forget the Blessing of Pets today (1:30 pm on the church steps) and the upcoming Italian Night (Oct. 15th). Organizer Elizabeth Buckley asks that tickets be purchased as soon as possible so proper arrangements can be made. More info elsewhere in this bulletin. 4 THIS SUNDAY (Oct. 2nd) AT 1:30 PM ON CHURCH STEPS: BLESSING OF PETS ANNOUNCED MASS BOOK The 2017 Mass Book has just opened in the rectory office. Arrangements to have these Masses celebrated for particular intentions can now be made at the rectory during office hours. Our basketball program for children and teens began last weekend (Saturdays in our leased P.S. building on 37th Street). It is an instructional outreach for those who want to learn how to play this sport. For more info, call the rectory ( ). FAMILY MASS CHOIR AN INVITATION We are ready to start a new year for St. Raphael s Family Mass Choir and we need your talents. The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael s parish. Children in grades 2 and above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be interested in having any high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday s a month at 7:00PM and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve, and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow. The only requirements are that you attend practice and Mass and behave appropriately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist in the singing, who may play a musical instrument or who are willing to help with other support functions, such as transportation. (Ref) From Jan, our Music Minister RE: St. Raphael Choir Our parish choir, which sings at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass and on Christmas Eve, Easter Vigil and other major feast days, has begun rehearsing for the new season on Thursday evening at 7:30 pm in the church. We welcome back all our old members and encourage those members of our parish family who love to sing and have not yet joined to contact our music minister Jan at to arrange a short private hearing. Here are several good reasons for joining our church choir: 1.You will no longer be able to complain, "Church is so impersonal--i don't know anyone in my parish." 2.Psalm 100 will come to life for you as you "make a joyful noise unto the Lord". 3.Intellectual stimulation--when you make music, you are using both sides of your brain simultaneously. 4.Serving the Lord--considering all He does for us, it's just a little giving back to Him. 5.Serving others--the congregation really loves it when the choir leads the singing. 6.Every once in a while, you might catch a glimpse of heaven's choir singing along with you.
