2 November 13th: Thirty-Third Sunday In Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Many of you commented on how moving it was to have newly-ordained Deacon Pil Koo (John) Hwang with us last Sunday to assist at three Masses and preach his first homilies ever in English and Korean in our parish. Father Luke and I, along with the Korean Sisters and a member of our Korean community s Vocations Committee, attended the 3-hour ordination ceremony the previous day in Yonkers. Bishop Di Marzio, in the name of the three NYC metropolitan dioceses, ordained 16 men as transitional deacons: 8 for our Diocese of Brooklyn; 4 for the New York Archdiocese, and 4 for the Rockville Center (L.I.) Diocese. See the centerfold of this week s Tablet for photos. Deacon John will continue his major seminary studies during the upcoming weeks, and do weekend ministry at the parish of St. Mary Mother of Jesus in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn (where he had previously been assigned for pastoral work). Before that, he served in the parish I formerly pastored: Holy Spirit in Borough Park, Brooklyn. Next June, he will be ordained a priest and, hopefully, on that occasion, his parents can come over from Korea to be in attendance. O Father, you desire all of us to be happy. Stir up the grace of a religious vocation in the hearts of many men and women. Grant to them the willingness and generosity to give of themselves, their lives, their time and their talents to the service of Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord and Savior, and to His Holy Church. May more men and women go forth as priests, deacons, brothers and sisters to bring the truths of our Catholic faith to all others so that soon they, too, may know You better and love You more...and serving You, be truly happy. Amen. Deacon John told me how much he enjoyed last weekend s experience in our parish, and especially the cards, posters and banner created for him by the boys and girls in our Religious Education program. He delivered a fine homily, with a personal testimony about his experience of making the Santiago de Compostela walk and how the challenging experience parallelled, not only his personal journey towards the priesthood, but everyone s trek through life. His opening line, linking a line from last Sunday s gospel with the promise of celibacy he made the previous day, was pure gold I don t think he ever imagined the roar of laughter it would provoke. This past week was designated National Vocation Awareness Week. The United States has the fourth largest Catholic population of any country. Nowadays about 500 priests are ordained annually in our nation, and obviously more are needed. Keep Deacon John and the other newlyordained deacons in your prayers, and pray that others sift out God s plan for them through the possibility of a church vocation: priesthood, sisterhood, religious life.
