2 June 4th: Pentecost Sunday FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, If the weather permits, we have our second OUTDOOR FLEA MARKET of the season today from 9 am to 3 pm. In case of a rainout, it will shift to next Sunday. Also today, the Solemnity of Pentecost, we will celebrate the Confirmation of six adults at the 12:30 pm Spanish Mass. Under the guidance of our pastoral minister, Bogar Casiano, they have been preparing for several months to complete their church membership through reception of the sacrament of the Holy Spirit. We commend them for their follow-through commitment, and we urge any other teenagers and adults who missed a childhood sacrament to contact us so that you can complete your Christian initiation next time around. This afternoon, at 4:00 pm, we join Father John Pilkoo Hwang, ordained yesterday by Bishop DiMarzio, as he celebrates his First Mass of Thanksgiving here at 4:00 pm. He ll impart First Blessings afterwards in church, and then we ll enjoy a reception in his honor. In his future ministry, may he always be a faithful steward of the mysteries of Christ! The incoming priest (Father Kuno Kim) serving our Korean parishioners is scheduled to arrive this weekend in time for Father John s Ordination and First Mass. Also, our former Korean priest (Fr. Luke Kim) has also flown in from Korea to attend these special events. Next weekend we will celebrate another Group Wedding at the 12:30 pm Mass. Three couples, who (with their present or prior partner) once went through a civil ceremony, have now regularized their situation and are free to celebrate the sacrament of matrimony. 6 THIS N THAT 1. Today we welcome one of the Polish Vincentian Fathers from St. Stanislaus Kostka parish in Greenpoint to celebrate the 11:00 am Mass. This is kind of a trade in connection with St. Raphael s affiliation with the Catholic Academy of that nearby parish. I m going to St. Stan s to do a special visual homily (Magic Mass?) in connection with their Pentecost celebration of Children s Day. 2. Thank you to Queen of Angels parish for their ongoing support of our Food Pantry. Their most recent gift was $400 deeply appreciated! 3. Congratulations to Stephanie Xavier, one of our Communion Ministers and daughter of Subi and John De- Silva. Stephanie, who is currently doing a lab internship at Brooklyn s Downstate Medical Center, has been accepted into the Master Degree program in Biotechnology at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She s waiting to hear from a few other academic institutions before making her final decision. 4. Also, two of our Religious Education (CCD) catechists are marking transitions: Mari Aucupina is graduating from Queens College with a degree in Psychology and works with the Queens Center for Progress, the happy and helpful group that does community service at St. Raphael s on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Mari s sister, Diane, is graduating from Christ the King High School in Middle Village, and will be going to the College of Staten Island, hoping to go into Nursing. Kudos to both! The remaining dates for the new season are: June 4, July 2, August 6, September 10 and October 1. More info to come soon. In doing Spring cleaning, if you discover any useful, nolonger needed items in good condition, please consider donating them, to the parish fundraising table at the Flea Market. We cannot accept appliances, furniture or clothing. Thank you. SUNDAY, JUNE 18TH, IS FATHERS DAY A novena of parish Masses will be offered for your special intentions. List them on the Remembrance Envelope, for placement on the altar throughout June. On Fathers Day, there will be a special blessing of Fathers at parish Masses.
